OT but probably worth being mentioned...

This is the speed-corrected version of the HH boot (which is faulty btw) thumbs down

sleeve notes:

"Despite the informality and lively spontaneity of the Basement sessions it would be misleading in the extreme to attribute their having been crudely recorded, as Greil Marcus alludes in his CBS sleeve notes, "on a home tape recorder". Garth Hudson was responisible for the recording setup, and he was able to make inventive use of PA equipment left over from th 1965-66 world tour. these include 2 Altech tube mixers, and 4 or 5 'state of the art' studio quality, Neumann microphones, the use of which explains the exuberant rich warmth of the sound on the Basement Recordings.

The origiial recordings were (almost) all in stereo, the standard set-up, which was largely adhered to throughout, being... Right Channel: Dylan's vocal, acoustic guitar, piano, harmony vocal, Left Channel: bass, organ, drums, electric guitar, 2nd harmony vocal. Sadly, to date, all officially released Basement Tape material has been presented in collapsed mono, and the wonderful depth and much of the intimacy in the original recordings has been lost.

Garth Hudson, however, arranged for engineer John Simon to make, under studio conditions, a stereo Safety Tape of 19 of the Basement Songs, onto 15ips 10" reels. 15 of these tracks were mastered directly from the original stereo tapes though curiously the last 4 were taken from inferior sources - they have been replaced in this rconstruction of the Safety Tape with tracks from the Fraboni Reels that Robertson and Fraboni compiled when preparing the offical Basement release.

Quite what the purpose or intention of this Safty Tape was is unclear. Certainly it was not referenced for use for any of the offical Basement Tapes releases, suggesting that its existence had not been officially documented. All that is known of the tape's subsequent history is that it ended up in, and was ultimately liberated from, the personal tape archive of Neil Young. Now there was another man who knew how to mix up the medicines!"

I was there yesterday and it was a fantastic concert! A truly rocking show with some very fine songs.
Gotta serve somebody is one hell of an opener, I finally heard Every Grain of Sand in concert and Honest with me might have been the best performance of the band during the whole evening with great guitar solos (yes!!). Bob clearly was in a great shape last night and he smiled during the whole show, even at the audience grinning smiley

Statistically, the most interesting song was of course Po' Boy (which by the way also was a powerful performance) since the song has been last played in April 05 and last night was only the 9th performance of the song altogether.

It was a very enjoyable show, go and see him if you can!

"Bob clearly was in a great shape last night and he smiled during the whole show"

WOW WOW!
Seriously, Bob currently injects a new youth in his shows these days cos imho he finds European and Southern-American audiences refreshing and inspiring.
People listen respectfully, they don't whistle like they're at a hockey game they don't scream stupid rude comments.

A new album, a tour and "Tell Tale Signs" I'M HAPPY! winking smiley

Correct. Its certainly the least played of the Love and Theft songs. I think it was also the last one to be premiered.

Three songs from his gospel era last night. Thats quite unusual. Maybe he was feeling in the mood as it was Palm Sunday.

Time Trip vol.XXXXIII
Bob in Praha 1995. He had flu but decided to play anyway. The result is comparable to the U.K. 1966 gigs (this time without illegal substances). The performance is etheral, magnificient, delicate, well I'm running out of words winking smiley

One of the 10 best Dylan shows I've heard and I've heard many...
Exc. aud tape to boot!

And no "play a song we can recognize" grunts from the super-respectful audience. Tsss those Czech are sissies....

You're right so back to the topic!

The 2009-04-05 Saarbrücken, Germany show in very very nice aud quality (CCat will probably nick this one too).
THIS arrangement of "Every Grain Of Sand" is not my fav but Bob was super-relaxed yesterday (the Obama effect?) and all the songs flow nicely. DLable in 20 minutes since there are about 350 seeders on it! :-)

Thanks for that "Senor" clip. This particular number is one of my favourits ever, and personally, when I heard Dylan doing it in Helsinki at the beginning of this decade ,he absolutely won this critical fan back! I was thrilled by TIME OUT OF MIND album, but wasn't sure of his condition on stage (I had some bad memories from the mid-90's.), but he was totally awesome, and "Senor" was perhaps the most outstanding performance of any artist anywhere I have wittnessed live.

I feel sad that I missed him this time in Europe. No excuses. My loss.

An OT post in an OT thread - hope that's OK!
I follow all the Dylan threads and, although I still don't manage to get into his recent stuff, it got me into listening to his older stuff for the first time in years, so thanks for that! And a few random thoughts, with a question in the end, to you specialists:

New Morning is such a magnificent album! I love the simplicity of the lyrics and the jazzy, stripped down band. Time Passes Slowly captures a unique athmosphere.

I even rediscover some not too old stuff that I like: "Someone's got a hold on my heart", much superior to "Tight connexion to my heart" in my view, so well sung. And the live version of "Heart of Mine" and "Isis" from Biograph.

And "Nobody Cept You" from the vol.1 of Bootleg series. The singing is so moving! So the question is: has this one ever found its way on an album, or live? Is it available in a cleaner sound?

Well. Keep posting! It's funny I still love to hear about Dylan even if I don't dig his stuff anymore. Kind of like an ex-girlfriend!

no. and, i'm not sure what's wrong with the biograph version, either. sounds clean to my ears. he did this song a handful of times as part of his solo set during the '74 tour with the Band...found in audience/bootleg quality only, though....

Not much wrong with the biograph version, but to my ears, a little too much bass, the sound a little muffled and the voice not ringing loud and clear. Does not spoil my enjoyment; but I'm getting the girl into Dylan and wish I could blast that song in crystal clear sound!

13 The Times We've Known (song by Charles Aznavour)

WOW! The last (and very 1st?) version of this song was NYC late 1998. IIRC there are only 2 live performances of this tune then!
Hope a decent tape will pop up on Dime...

Seriously Bob has got guts. Imagine how many people in the place :
- know the tune
- will recognize the 2009 arrangement...

What a gift for Paris! Thank you Bob!! thumbs up

Thanks, Doxa - I also missed his European concerts this year, due to....a lot of complicated things... Senor surely is a magnificent song....one of the few ones that still makes a stronger impression on me, would be "Changing Of The Guards"....maybe the most impressive song ever, I'd say.....there's some incredible footage available of this song; from Nashville 1978 - if you haven't seen it......then, see it here

Re: OT - Bob Dylan Setlists - 2009

Yeah, that is a HOT version. Talking about STREET LEGAL, that is one of those albums Dylan managed to create an unique feeling and identity in it. It is very rare occasions when the feelings of getting bored and tired (of life, love, fame, etc.), etc. are transformed into eternal music. Even the disappointment in 'love section' are so differently handled than in the haunting 'divorce' album BLOOD ON THE TRACKS. The nihilist vibes of "Is Your Love In Vain?" and "True Love" gets me every time.

Listening now chronologically Dylan, a new born, inspired Dylan in SLOW TRAIN COMING sounds almost logical step from from STREET LEGAL. SL is kind of reparing us there, setting us the 'right' mood...

Well, the Eastern coming - perhaps time to listen Dylan's Christian period - but STREEL LEGAL really sets the mental mood for Good Friday...(At least here in deep Lutherian countries where we are always hard working and suffering...)
