Wow, Bob on guitar on 4 songs!? I guess he is also facing the crowd during those songs. Isn't he getting fan-friendly? (That might be dangerous for him smiling smiley ) I would really love to see him again, the setlist looks great. I hope I will have a chance to catch him the next year.

I´m a big dylan fan, maybe a bigger Dylan Fan than a Stones fan. But I always check expectingrain.com instead of this site for dylan news. In my opinion Dylan should be discussed there, there are many OT here.

I don't think Dylan discussions are a problem on this board. Usually everything concerning Dylan is posted in this thread (and in this thread only), with the possible exception of Theme Time Radio Hour.
Moreover I think there is a good number of Dylan fans among the stones addicts here who justify the existence of a thread like this one.

I was hoping for some more TTL tunes. He's treating it like the Stones treated ABB thus far! I do understand its a shorter setlist as it's a ballpark tour with 3 other bands, so maybe as the NET moves foward, we'll get a steady dose of TTL tunes. I saw him in New Britain July 15th and was pleased as we got I Feel A Change Coming on debut! MEZ

1. Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 (Bob on guitar)
2. It Ain't Me, Babe (Bob on guitar)
3. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again (Bob on keyboard)
4. Man In The Long Black Coat (Bob on keyboard)

10. When The Deal Goes Down (Bob on keyboard)
11. Thunder On The Mountain (Bob on keyboard)

12. Like A Rolling Stone (Bob on keyboard)
13. Jolene (Bob on keyboard)
14. All Along The Watchtower (Bob on keyboard)

Dylan will support TTL more in his future tours I think, when he'll come back to his usual touring way (clubs and little arenas).

Out of 14 songs by gig, he plays between 1 and 3 songs out of TTL, while the Stones played, at the best of ABB tour, between 2 and 4 songs from ABB for a 22-songs gig.

I enjoyed the Aberdeen show last Friday. Eight out of 14 songs were from 2001-present. That someone with his back catalog has that much faith in his recent work is pretty impressive.

A fair criticism, but I think Dylan's working method is quite different than the one of the Stones and other big commercial names. He does not use "the backage concepts" (a new album and a new tour, with the same name most probably plus a big hullabaloo) but he is in that "never ending tour", one gig after another (well, that what musicians but not superstars usually do) and he makes albums once in while when the muse gets there (the latest was just a spark of inspiration based on one soundtrack tune). He integrates the new songs into his set list quite slowly, but if we look those set lists, almost half of them is based on his last three albums - so the weight clearly is in his current stuff. These are mixed with (excellent) choices from his back catalog songs.

The contrast to the Stones is a huge one - if we look the set lists of A BIGGER BANG tour, the band sounded more than forced to play the obligatory two to three songs from the new album - and totally neglected the material prior that and UNDERCOVER, expect "You Got Me Rocking" and probably some Keith ballad. It looks like that by LICKS TOUR they had forgetten they had made an album called BRIDGES TO BABYLON with some excellent songs like "Saint of Me" and "Out of Control" in it. The Stones seemingly use the new albums barely as one-timers to support a new tour in imagewise. If the Stones get back on the road again next year, how many A BIGGER BANG tunes we might then hear? (A rhetorical question - no need to answer.)

Yeah, that's the point. What bothers me with the Stones is their lack of confidence to play more 'recent' (from STEEL WHEELS on) stuff. If this is due that (a) they don't like them, (b) they think the audiences don't like/know them, the result is that they appear to not believe at all on their constructive and creative efforts of the last twenty years. And that is a bad signal from a band that pretends to be a "living, breathing band", and not a nostalgy act. If the band doesn't respect their own recent creative efforts, why should anyone else either?

And if the reason is that these new songs are not good enough compared to their past masterpieces, well, you are the goddamn Rolling Stones - work your asses to convince your audiences of their strength! (And the truth is that not many of Dylan's latest songs are qualitywise in the level of his huge past - but that is not the point!)

Another difference is that Dylan constantly reinvent himself. You can't compare Blood On The Tracks and Desire, even if they have only one year between them. So it offers him more possibilities to promote his new material. And he doesn't play in front of such audiences as the Stones'.

Not to be a nitpicker...

I agree with almost everything except for the fact that the Stones did play Saint of Me during the Licks tour,
(and possibly Out of Control somewhere ?). Perhaps the setlist statisticians can chime in?
Saint of Me was played at Vredenberg, and was quite the crowd pleaser.
The crowd singing the "Oh Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah" part continued even after the song was over.
It is imo one of their best songs of the last 25 years, and is even better when played live.
It's ashame it hasn't become a "warhorse"...

Yes Hairball, I also remeber those two songs being played, but very rarely if my memory serves me right. But by A BIGGER BANG they were totally gone, right?

I hope the band will find them again, because they have every reason to be 'midnight ramblers of the recent years'. And the audience seem to love them. in fact, as far my experiences go, the new songs generally get quite warm response. "Don't Stop" worked really nice in LICKS TOUR, as people claim "Streets of Love" to have doing as well, etc. Okay, those are not the songs that needs to be regulars, but I hope my point comes through.

If the band would have such a trust on their recent stuff as they seem to have for "You Got Me Rocking" - a mediocre song they seemed to decide to play for a classic - well, perhaps we might have more profilic songs around at the moment. it could also be point that the new songs are already fated in the studio - they don't even consider them to be any regulars anyday, but just album fillers, and albums are only means to promote tours. This means that the band does not hit the studio "seriously" anymore.

Sorry a Stones OT in a Dylan thread!grinning smiley
