I love them. My feeling is that they exemplify what we often believe to be true of the most special bands: that the individuals are super, but together they create something bordering on the transcendent, something indefineable. I have to say that, as daft as it may sound to people who haven't heard them or who don't like the music, I can't absolutely trust the musical opinions of

Hello, I saw this film the other night. It's no better than alright - a few effective scenes, a laugh or two but, as with most films featuring Jason Statham, not one for the intellectuals. What is of potential interest to us, however, is that, on imdb.com, Mick is listed as being part of the cast, as 'Bank Employee - Safe Deposit (uncredited)'. I haven't been able to fi

Absolutely top band, brilliant. Ogden's Nut Gone Flake is an album to rate with Village Green by The Kinks and, as some of you have said above, Marriott had some voice - R'n'B influenced, but with a huge amount of soul in it's own right. Some of the live BBC sessions demonstrate his power and range and it leaves me, a singer myself, feeling entirely inadequate. They were a

Nanker, As has been said above, definitely visit the Stax studios, and Satellite record shop beside it. They're a little way out of Memphis city centre, but well worth it if you're into your old soul. (There might still be a shuttle bus service linking Sun, Stax and the Smithsonian, which is another must see and is right in the centre, just off Beale Street.) I've been to Memphi

Wolf Marshall gives his thoughts on this, and explains it to some degree, in his book "The Rolling Stones' Guitar Signature Licks: A Step-by-Step Breakdown of the Guitar Styles of Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Mick Taylor and Ron Wood". Recommended (but only for guitar players - I don't think non-musicians would get much out of it). Declan

Absolutely beautiful part of France. I've travelled along the Riviera 4 or 5 times and I always stop off to look at the house. I know a lot of you live far away, in different parts of the world, and won't have had the chance to visit; Villefranche is a beautiful little town, and a munch and a glass at one of the cafes overlooking the harbour, across to where Nellcote is situated, is

Elvis, not sure exactly when (Vegas, early 70s probably), not sure of exact wording, but something like: "BJ Thomas has a song out at the moment and...ah don't really like it..but ah'll sing it anyway". Did this a few times did Elv, I think. If he didn't like a song, he'd tell the crowd before he performed it. Not a great means by which to excite the audience,

That 2010 interview in French is very enjoyable (and not too difficult to understand with a moderate knowledge of French; great thing about listening to an Englishman speak it!). I'd never heard Criss-Cross Mind before. It's fairly generic and could do with a few more ideas (as you say, it's unfinished), but here and there it features those unmistakeable early 70s Stones element

Hello, I'd been looking forward to seeing them for ages and I thought they were excellent. Given the festival nature of the day, with 4 or 5 support acts, I think that the crowd were quite happy to have a listen to who or whatever appeared on the stage. As Gazza says, though, the conditions were hardly what the band themselves are used to - it was incongruous to say the least to see a l

Hello, Like Nanker above, I can't let the opportunity pass to comment on the Fannies. They are just so 'nice' to listen to - not always a compliment with guitar music, but definitely intended as such here. It's certainly not particularly original music, but when it's made as thoughtfully and as melodically as TFC do I can easily overlook that. Bandwagonesque is one o

Hello, After posting above to find out where to start as regards an overview of Mick's work, I searched online and found a Pirates BBC sessions double-CD. All of it is from 1976-78 when they had reformed. It's all live sessions, a 3-piece band, and the guitar playing is just brilliant. People eulogise about this hybrid lead and rhythm style Mick had and you can hear why on these gi

Hello, Apparently, it wasn't Hyde Park but Green Park which, for those who know London town, is just across Hyde Park Corner from Hyde Park. Looking at it, it could be either as there isn't enough background detail to enable this Londoner to make a fully informed decision. I've always read it described as Green Park, though. Finally, I once went to a fancy-dress party as

This is indeed very sad. I was only looking into him as a guitarist last year, having seen him in another 'Greatest Guitarists' poll. I know he was the Pirates guitarist and that he played and toured with Macca on the Run Devil Run album, but I wasn't able to pin down an album or collection of his playing. Can anyone recommend a good place to start, please? Declan

I've seen 3 people on Mastermind choose the Stones as their specialist subject over the years - and I've got higher scores than all of them! I'm sure I wouldn't be alone in that on this site, however. One of the BBC's weathermen chose The Stone Roses as his subject last night - great choice, that one. Declan

This is actually really interesting to me for a few different reasons. Firstly, I come from London, born and brought up here. Secondly, I feel that the ever-increasing cultural influence of America means that its culture (and all that goes with it - film, vocabulary, dialect, accent etc.) is becoming the dominant one, certainly throughout the English-speaking world and possibly beyond. Thirdly, b

Hello to all, I know that there is already a (very interesting) thread going on regarding the film, but I have a specific question regarding the different versions. I'd like to buy the 4-disc version but I'm finding it difficult to find it on any UK retailer's website - or at least, I think I am as neither Amazon nor Play nor HMV make it clear which version you'd be gett

Hello, Whilst this is by no means a matter of the greatest importance, I've just been having a look at the tour dates for the European tour of 1982. Now, I've always known that they played a club date in Scotland as part of that tour, but I've only just realised that there were three dates and that they were all at the start of the tour. Now, presumably these were warm-up dat

Hello, I've played at the Half Moon a couple of times; met Ronnie in there at a gig by his daughter's band; and saw The Rollin' Stoned there in July on my Stag Weekend, so the pub means a lot to me. Also, I was born and raised in the pub trade so it really saddens me that so many pubs are closing. Now, it's easy for me to say this, but considering the number of s
