O/T Mick Green 1944-2010

Hello,

Blimey-just saw this bad,bad news.I knew that Mick had spent quite a bit of 2009 in hospital but was led to believe that he was getting better.

He was a musician who made time for fans, which meant a lot to people who could only dream of playing like he could...he was in a class of his own.

Cheers,

Si.

Sad news indeed. Mick was a monster of a player. Saw him a couple of times with the Pirates and he just burned.

He will be sadly missed.

Oh dear. The Pirates were like a breath of fresh air when they reformed around 1977. They toured the UK constantly and were so energetic that even the punks loved 'em. Mick was, with Hank Marvin, one of the first British guitar slingers and for that he deserves a place in rock'n'roll history.

I'm a close friend of Micks son LLoyd.

Apart from being a tremendous guitar player Mick was a great guy,but also a very humble one, totally without ego considering the reputation that he had built up and the people he had played with.

Unfortunatley this news had been coming but it's no less sad

This is indeed very sad. I was only looking into him as a guitarist last year, having seen him in another 'Greatest Guitarists' poll. I know he was the Pirates guitarist and that he played and toured with Macca on the Run Devil Run album, but I wasn't able to pin down an album or collection of his playing. Can anyone recommend a good place to start, please?

Do you mean too bad that he played on Run Devil Run or that he died? In any case thanks for the great music Mick. Blessings to you and your family.

Great record of course, but thats Joe Moretti on guitar - not Mick Green. Green didn't join until 1962. The first record to features the great Mick Green was Shot Of Rhythm and Blues.

This is my favourite Johny Kidd and the Pirates recording to feature Mick Green. Listening to his slashing rhythm work, it's easy to understand why he was such an influence on a teenage Pete Townsend.

I just read this a few days ago while trolling the web. Really sucks. Mick played on Pauls 'Russian' album and also appears on his 'Live at the Cavern Club' dvd. One of my top three guitarist, along with Wilco Johnson and of course Keith. I also have an audio recording from around 1979 of George Thorogood on a Philly radio show. He talks about just coming back from England and seeing The Pirates. He goes on and on about how great they are. You can tell the interviewer/dj has no idea who he's talkin' about. There's also a Townsend article in Trouser Press from the late 70's where Pete admits of seeing The Pirates in the early 60's and nicking Micks guitar style. I'll dig through my stash and post it if I can find it. One of the many unsung and ignored great guitar players. Mick will be sorely missed.

Hello,

After posting above to find out where to start as regards an overview of Mick's work, I searched online and found a Pirates BBC sessions double-CD. All of it is from 1976-78 when they had reformed. It's all live sessions, a 3-piece band, and the guitar playing is just brilliant. People eulogise about this hybrid lead and rhythm style Mick had and you can hear why on these gigs - he holds the whole thing together brilliantly. Highly recommended, and shouldn't be hard to find for those interested.

I had the honour of supporting Mick and the Pirates at a gig in London a few years back.

I had a brief chat with him during soundchecks - He was one cool guy and an awesome rock'n'roll guitar player. He said he wouldn't have bothered trying to get into the music business if he'd been starting out nowadays, as it was so competitive and horrible. Not that encouraging for a young pretender like myself. He did say he liked my playng though, which is still the highlight of my 'career' so far.

RIP Mick. You rocked
