Thought for the day/night as I sit in front of youtube: The early Beatles took their cues from Buddy Holly, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Carl Perkins, etc. All the rock 'n roll and rockabilly artists of the 50s. But could you imagine the Beatles (as a group...this might not hold true for individual members) ever devoting themselves to mastering the blues of Muddy Waters, Howlin'

Great call with Casino/pen stabbing scene. Casino must set the record for number of Stones songs used: satisfaction, long long while, gimme shelter, sweet virginia, CYHMK just off the top of my head. But I have to go with JJF from Mean Streets also... The opening with Tell Me is awesome too:

Cool topic. Too hard to choose one, so I'll give my one vote and then an honorary mention. Vote goes to GS from Paradiso. Shows why they will always be the best. They outdo themselves--and every other rock act for that matter--here... Honorary mention: Fort Worth '78. along with the studio recording of 'Down the Road Apiece' this is THE definition of rock and roll:

Thanks for that smorgasbord of choices UrbanSteel! Watching both the Atlantic City and Saitama versions (and everything in between) really highlights the best of the modern-day Stones. I think those versions, while totally different, hold up just as well with their older stuff. Keith and Charlie, in particular, are brilliant, and Mick always brings in a stellar vocal performance on MR. Don't

Yea I believe Pete calls Ray Davies the "poet laureate" of rock and roll. The Kinks have to be right behind the Stones for me as well! Saw Ray Davies at the Beacon in April '08 and he brought the house down. From Face to Face to Muswell Hillbillies has gotta be one of the greatest runs of albums in rock and roll. A brilliant lyricist too. Shangri-La might be one of my favorite song

Just watched this over at Letterman's website. Incredible mini-concert and he's still got the finest voice in rock and roll. "Let me Roll It" was a highlight. If you watch the concert there's no way you could call Macca "candy ass." That's just an old, silly Beatle-era stereotype. That was hard-driving rock and roll music at its best.

Just finished listening to this, after not having played it in a while. Really, is there any point in listening to anything else after this? Simply awesome. Keith's guitar is a monster, and you get the sense the entire song revolves around it. Taylor's leads are mind-boggling, and Jagger puts on a real vocal performance (and of course Charlie and Bill great as always). What a gem.

The White Album is really tremendous, although that album is almost more like 3 solo acts who happen to be playing on each other's songs. IMHO, Macca and George own that album. As for my favorite though, its gotta be Abbey Road by a mile. The finest collection of songs, and it rocks hard too. Its the Beethoven's 9th of rock and roll.

Does anyone know if this is primarily a Keith song, or a Mick song? I once read somewhere (don't remember where) that Keith wrote it on his own waiting in his car or something like that. On a broader note, the Mick-Keith writing partnership always fascinated me. Unlike the Beatles, who by 1965 were essentially writing their songs individually, and the Who, whose songs were written almost

U2 of course, but I'm surprised no one has mentioned The Hives yet. They put on an amazing live show, and their frontman is a joy to watch (clearly, he has studied, and borrowed from Mick). If you haven't seen them live, I highly recommend it

I'm so glad McCartney is getting credit here for his all around amazing skills with every instrument. His guitar leads were simply phenomenal, and I think, he's incredibly underappreciated in that role. He played lead on Taxman, not to mention some great work on Back in the USSR, Helter Skelter, and lots of Abbey Road, including the best part (imho) of the guitar outro on The End.

Interesting. I'm always torn between the experimentation and uniqueness of Achtung Baby and the sheer awesomeness of the Joshua Tree. Not as innovative, but I think its their peak. Early U2, from Boy to Joshua Tree is really something else.

Listening to Tumbling Dice from Brussels '73, I kept on hoping the song would never end, and they'd just keep on playing. The combination of Keith's rhythm, the horns, and of course Taylor's guitar make the whole thing sublime. That made me think of other tunes that I listen to, and hope that they would just play on forever: Sweet Virginia and Loving Cup (something about th

I was at the show last night as well, and it was fantastic. HalfNanker, where were you sitting? I was on the lower balcony, and my only complaint was that I couldn't hear some of Ray's witty banter (which is actually worth listening to, unlike most musicians). Otherwise it was great, and the last 7-10 songs, he just brought the house down, with all those encores. Victoria was just incre

Recent careful listenings on headphones seem to indicate there are 3 guitars on this wonderful tune. The left channel im pretty sure is ronnie, bc he's got the mini-weave-solo-thing, and the right channel is the main riff by keith, i assume. but whats that third guitar? an overdub ny keith or ronnie? or is that mick? if it is mick, then our understanding of the weave must change, because the

about bagwell and ortiz and pujols and tons of other players,,,,remember mitchell basically had only TWO sources, one from the mets cloubhouse and another from the blue jays/yankees clubhouse. he didn't get balco guys and many others, which would undoubtedly name many many more players. pujols however, said "you can test me any day." i dont know why, but somehow i trust him

A while back i asked people to help find good kinks stuff. after a few months of intense listening i'm just completely blown away by this band. besides the stones and beatles, i can't think of a more superb, eclectic, talented 60s-era british band . arthur, lola, village green, those albums are just so unique (on a related note, im looking forwards to seeing the darjeeling limited)

I'll probably get a lot of hell for this but sometimes Taylor's leads just don't seem to "fit" with the Stones sound...its kind of hard to explain. Don't get me wrong, his leads on Midnight Rambler and YCAGWYW are just about the greatest thing ever, but on other tunes--Gimme Shelter--the leads just seem a bit obtrusive...i'm still developing this thought, so wo
