OT: Holy crap, the Kinks are something else

A while back i asked people to help find good kinks stuff. after a few months of intense listening i'm just completely blown away by this band. besides the stones and beatles, i can't think of a more superb, eclectic, talented 60s-era british band . arthur, lola, village green, those albums are just so unique

(on a related note, im looking forwards to seeing the darjeeling limited)

Right you are.

And don´t miss to listen to Misfits and Sleepwalker, also a good period! Not to mention Face To Face, Kink Kontrovery and Something Else.

And the last Ray Davies album Other People´s Lives is a killer too...
See him live if you can!

Has Dave recovered from the stroke?
I wish to see the Davis brothers reunited with Mick and Pete for at least one album and some well selected shows.

Dave is still in therapy. He recently has released a new studio album and live disc as well avaliable on his websit. Also he has some cool webcam tours of Muswill Hill and talks about the Kinks history. Ray has a new disc coming out soon, which is amazing! It took him over 20 years to release his first one! (not counting Storytellers)....
There has been rumors that they have been discussing a possible reunion...I haven't heard Dave's new solo disc so can't say how his guitar chops are after the stroke, but I have read several reviews that said it is very good.

As above posters said Misfits and Sleepwalker are good later day Kinks, and School Bos in Disgrace is great! And one of their last releases To The Bone a mix of small live studio accoustic with some arena electric thrown in. Great stuff!

JMoisica, I would go back to the early period before getting the Misfits/Low Budget stuff. just my tendency...

Muswell Hillbillies is a great album. Like the stones, the Kinks were in a "back to basics" period in the early 70s (Lola V. Powerman, Muswell Hillbillies, and Everybody's in Show-Biz) with simple rock songs. Great period of music there. Muswell has some of my favorite kinks songs on it, including the title track, 20th Century Man, and People in Grey. After this period came the "rock opera period", which was less succesful. There are some good songs between the Preservation Acts, but I'm not too fond of them. Most people dismiss "Soap Opera" as wierd, but to be honest I like it (Hanve another drink would make a great sing-a-along song, while You Cant Stop the Music sounds like a funeral song of sorts). Finally there is Schoolboys In Disgrace, which is the last (and probably my favorite) Kinks Rock Opera. Besides having my favorite Kinks song on it (No more looking back, a song i think alot of us can relate to) it is filled with great music (Jack the idiot dunce, 50s style doo wop and Beach Boys style surf, Education, a great "mini-opera", and the Hard Way, a great song [better on live album a few years later] that again takes on the "I Cant Explain Riff).
I like the Kinks and personally would much rather see them reunite in the original line up than Led Zeppelin.

Don't forget Low Budget after Sleepwalker and Misfits.

there early stuff is great also, true, i love face to face and something else. dead end street particularly sticks out, it sounds like it could be part of a broadway musical or something. i haven't listened enough to misfits and sleepwalker, i should check that stuff out. how is ray live? has anyone seen the kinks live? i'd die to see ray or the kinks

Ray is fantastic live! I saw him twice for his Storytellers tour...he was so warm and open. And really knows how to work a crowd. Both times it was in a very small venu. The second time I saw him I brought a larg Union Jack flag and he signed it for me....
Great shows.
I have also seen the Kinks 10 times. They were touring a lot in the 80s and always came through Michigan.

About 2 years ago Ray released "Other People's Lives" which in my opinion was the best new release of any classic rock artist the past 15 or 20 years. Even if you don't agree with that statement, it's well worth the listen. I put it on rotation on my car CD player when I bought it, and it's been on there ever since.

Others People's Lives is a really great CD. Try it.

A band (from America, although they SEEM English!) from the '70's and beyond that was very much influenced by the Kinks is Sparks. If you enjoy the point of view of Ray and Dave, you'll dig the attitude of Ron and Russell.

I saw them in the 70's....and glad I did! I would see them in concert again too!
Lots of fun and verrry entertaining!

Don't overlook the non-album singles in the classic 65-70 period. They are as good as the albums or better. Most, but not all, are on Kink Kronikles.

Read a few of my Kinks reviews here:

Check out the Double CD BBC Sessions from their early days, except for the annoying introductions, it's a great find.

If you are really getting into the Kinks and have got their golden 65-71 albums then try hunting out an amazing bootleg called The Great Lost Kinks Album which features loads of unreleased songs from this period. Some of the songs such as Misty Water and Rosemary Rose have appeared on the 3CD Village Green Preservation Society reissue.

The ultimate, deluxe, or whatever it is Great Lost Kinks Album bootleg, also has the remaining songs that were supposed to be on the 3-CD version of Village Green. These are mainly the demos of the same songs. Either way, Silver Dagger's right, the Great Lost Kinks album is good, because some of the stuff has yet to make it on CD (some has now been released due to Reissue, however).
