Important song because it was one the first plus 10 minute songs puts to record, but I always kinda get bored with it by minute 8 or so. Hope I'm not killed for saying that. The best part of the song is Mick's wild vocals. I always thought Jim Morrison was ripping him off on this tune with the End etc.

Thoughts? Love the Hives, they should do more Stones covers.

Bill's playing during '81 was out of this world. His playing on Just My Imagination might be his finest moment with the Stones. I forgot about Keith playing on Pretty Beat Up. Another highlight of a Stones guitarists playing bass (and an altogether great song)

Sorry if this has been brought up before. Some of the most interesting bass work on Stones records has been done by their guitarists. My vote for number one is Fingerprint File by Mick Taylor; melodic, fluid playing. Close runner up is Ronnie on Emotional Rescue. Others of note: Keith on SFTD, JJF, and Live with Me and MT on Tumbling Dice and Shine a Light. There are others too... What

Thinking of this Kinks lyric... There's a guy in my block, he lives for rock He plays records day and night And when he feels down he puts some rock 'n' roll on And it makes him feel alright And when he feels the world is closing in He turns his stereo way up high ...as I put on You Can't Catch Me, put the stereo up high, and listen to the Stones best early album stra

Hmmm that's too bad. Though I did notice Dave Davies has a show booked in NYC in February which should be pretty cool.

Great call bassplayer. Saw them at Giants Stadium for the first time and they are a stellar live band. Not too many bands appreciate the art of the cover song these days. U2 is one of the few who does.

As strange as a question this might be, I think I can actually answer it: "Then came Keith Richards: “He got a regular slice, and I gave him a piece of spinach-and-artichoke to sample,” says Artichoke co-owner Francis Garcia. “He started doing something with his hands. Playing air guitar and jumping around; it was cool.” http://nymag.com/restaurants/reviews/underground/45775/ And bt

YES! The Kinks are number two after the Stones for me. Of course I have to count Dylan and the Beatles in there too somehow. But The Kinks music is so awesome. by far the most underrated. such complex lyrics from ray and dave, and they always reexamined and explored similar themes, great harmonies. Dave's opening riff on You Really Got Me one of the most important moments in rock history.

Love it also, especially for MT. His playing on 'I and I' is the highlight for me, and the Chuck Berry styled Highway 61 is phenomenal. Also like the different lyrics on Tangled up in Blue. My favorite Dylan live album though has got to be Live at Budokan. Just dug that out of my dad's record collection recently, put the speakers way up, and the album just ROCKS from cover to co

This song never ceases to amaze me. I put on my head phones and listen to this and every time, its like a puzzle trying to figure out the mind-blowing guitar parts. So it seems like there are 3 guitar parts, and by the ending of the song each three seem to be playing incredibly intricate solos. And somehow it all works. No rhythm, just wild guitar parts coming in and out. One is Clapton, one m

As much as I love Lennon, I have to disagree with a few posters. Starting with Revolver McCartney really started taking control of the band and in my opinion, it shows (although he wouldn't really become the de facto leader till Sgt. Peppers). Eleanor Rigby, For No One, and Here, There, and Everywhere combine for some mind-blowing music. Macca and George Martin, and even Lennon seemed to go

The obvious choice has to be Pretty Beat Up! Best song from Undercover, in my opinion. (bit it would also be cool to hear a Faces tune also, like Stay with Me or Ooh La La)

Just took another listen to the live Round the Plynth/Gasoline Alley medley from the box set. Ronnie plays some unbelievable, kickass slide on that tune. At their peak, they made Zeppelin look like minor leaguers. RB--I would recommend picking up the box set. Its a worthwhile investment.

Agreed with Justin and Dandelion. Dude chill out. They're the Rolling Stones. Comedians make jokes about them. That's what they do. And I like Letterman too (even though it appears he is a bit of a sleazy guy). At least he's honest about it and forthright. I'll take him any day over Leno's super-blandness.

Have no idea where I heard this, so it might be baseless, but I recall someone saying that Mick Jagger once called 'I saw her standing there' the greatest rock and roll song he had ever heard. If anyone has a source for this would be appreciated

Was there too tonight. Great show. Loved when they threw in the old cover tunes into their own songs, though I wish they would've played an entire cover song straight. They threw in bits of Blackbird, Stand by Me, IORR, Miss You, and maybe Don't Stop Till you get Enough and Springsteen (not sure). Also, does anyone know if Mick was in the audience tonight? At one point I thought I he

Thanks for the helpful posts all. I'll end up being behind the stage, first tier about 16 rows up. Hope it works out. As for U2, I think we can all agree they are no Stones, but they've put out some great music, especially in their early years. Bad, Pride, Gloria, I Will Follow, Sunday Bloody Sunday and others (all of Joshua Tree) are fantastic, passionate, rock and roll songs. Acht

QuoteStonesTod anytime two or more musicians play together they "weave." it's not that it doesn't happen - it's that it ALWAYS happens.... I disagree. Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia are a great guitar duo, but all Weir does is strictly play rhythm while Garcia plays leads. Weaving definitely meant something, although I have to agree that these days its just another way of s

I know there was another thread about this, but thought some IORRians who have seen them could help out with the following. I want to try to catch them at Giants stadium this coming week. If i get tickets that are traditionally behind the stage (where you can't see a band perform), will i be able to get a perfect view of them (and the stage) because of this whole 360 degree view set up? than

So I was reading up on Ray Davies and noticed he supposedly directed something called 'Weird Nightmare.' After some Google searching I found this. Pretty cool stuff. Awesome to see Keith play jazz guitar. Does anyone know anything more about this/provide some background?

The only case I can think of where this is applicable is The Beatles who stated pretty clearly that their LSD use changed their music and songwriting starting around Revolver/Sgt. Peppers era. Otherwise I can't think it helps or hurts (unless your playing live as others have commented)

Awesome topic. Too many to choose from, and the Stray Cat Blues one was an amazing call. Here's a few more that haven't been mentioned yet: "You're the kind of person You meet at certain dismal dull affairs." "Feeling so tired, can't understand it Just had a fortnight's sleep" "Worked in bars and sideshows along the twilight zone On

Thanks for the posts. Imho, 'All About You' by Keith captures their relationship most beautifully: (opening lines) Well if you call this a life Why must I spend mine with you? If the show must go on Let it go on without you But Keith ends it so eloquently: Well I may miss you But missing me just isn't you I'm so sick and tired Of hanging around dogs like...

Giants Stadium September 2006. Hey, better late than never...I'm still in my early twenties. My dad's first time live though was Brussles 1973 followed by Antwerp a few days later (or maybe reverse order?). Hell of a first Stones concert to go to!

Great comments folks! Thanks for the input. I've always been in love with Village Green and Arthur, but only recently started warming up to Muswell Hillbillies. As you said whitem, so brilliant in how Ray somehow combines music-hall with raw country sounds (Alcohol=amazing). For me, it still doesn't rank as high as those two other albums but lyrically it might be the very best. All of t

Can any Kinks fans help me out? On Muswell Hillbillies, the song "Oklahoma USA," Ray sings: All life we work but work is a bore,/ If life's for livin' then what's livin' for? I absolutely love the lyric but every time I stop to think about what it means I can't seem to make heads or tails of it. Anyone wanna offer an explanation? Anyways, great song and alb
