Does anyone know if this is primarily a Keith song, or a Mick song? I once read somewhere (don't remember where) that Keith wrote it on his own waiting in his car or something like that.

On a broader note, the Mick-Keith writing partnership always fascinated me. Unlike the Beatles, who by 1965 were essentially writing their songs individually, and the Who, whose songs were written almost always by Pete, the Stones have seemed to have a truer "partnership." I especially like the instances where Keith seems to have written the basic melody or riff along with the chorus, or even just the title, and Mick fills in the rest. Those songs, to my knowledge, include Satisfaction, Wild Horses, Angie, and Beast of Burden. I'm wondering if Gimme Shelter fits into this mold (as its my all time favorite).

Its a Keith song.. Wrote it after seeing Mick in the bathtub with anita.

Mick wrote it after his brief street protest in London and after witnessing the decline of Brian Jones. Mick has a great interest in History, as you know because of all of the Russian Revolution references in SFD, and the unrest is further expressed here.

One of my all time Stones favorites especially the 1972 & 73 live versions!!!

Story is Mick & Anita shot scenes in Performance movie.
She had said to Keith that she was going to f-ck mick live.
Keef was strugglin' with the music to Performance, which
had stuck, but while he sat out at the parking lot,
waiting for Anita he wrote Gimme Shelter which originally is about
jealousy, unfaithfulness and deceit.

Then Mick put new words to it, really smashin' lyrics;
andlater on it developed into a kinda Vegas show act.

I think this pretty much sums it up.

Well most of us have all heard the version with Keith singing lead...wasn't this basically a scatch vocal for Mick? Leads me to believe that Keith wrote the whole damn thing and maybe even recorded the rythym tracks without Mick even being there, as Mick was so busy shooting Performance.

This is Keith Richards song. Although the lyrics could be Jaggers.

Don't forget the song started out as PAY YOUR DUES. Completely different lyrics same music and melody line. To me lyrics don't mean a thing. It was still a great song talking about something so different. i think you can find the song on "hot Stuff" it was under BB outtakes.
