stones69--what blew me away here was that in the "now" shot (two years ago) there was a field of rubble at pretty much the precise spot where the stage sat at Altamont (see middle of "then" photo). Had to be a coincidence... right? smiling smiley Also, as you can probably see, the ground was also worn away there--a totally dead patch of earth right where the stage sat. Has to be just a fluke, still, it gave the visit a nice added bonus (and I couldn't resist taking a hunk, just in case)

For today have a look www.altamontracing.com. New owners, lots of investements but no mentioning of the Stones.

"Dance (Pt. 1)"
(M. Jagger/K. Richards/R. Wood)

Hey, what am I doing standing here on the corner of
West 8th Street and 6th Avenue and...

Ah, skip it.

Nothing. Keith! Watcha, watcha doing? (whistle)
Oh, I think the time has come to get out, get out

Get up, get out, get into something new
Get up, get out, into something new

Ooh! And it's got me moving (Got me moving honey!)
Ooh! And it's got me moving
Ooh! And it's got me moving
Ooh! And it's got me moving

My my my, my my my, my my my, my my my, my

Poor man eyes a rich man
Denigrates his property
A rich man eyes a poor man
And envies his simplicity.

Get up, get up, into something new
Get up, get out, down into something new

Ooh! and it's got me moving
Ooh! and it's got me moving
Ooh! and it's got me moving
Ooh! and it's got me moving
Ooh! and it's got me moving

Yeah, get up, get up, get out
Into something new
Yeah, all, woncha all, woncha all, woncha all
Don't stand accused....

Yeah, I was suprised, schillid, that no one got it.
But I always thought that in "Dance" in the beginning it is Ronnie saying "Ask Keith" to Jagger's question, and then Jagger goes on "Keith what 're you doin?"

i know the tune/lyrics--that part i got--i just didn't think it connected to the theme of the thread--was a new idea--"places that actually appear in stones songs" or something, which is cool, just different

(which is why i won't post a photo of a "movie house, on 42nd street" smiling smiley)

What is the name of this building and where is it located?
I'm looking for years for it, to put it on my Sightseeinglist.

Thanks.

I wonder why they chose to crop out the chimney (or whatever the structure is in the center of the building) and do away with the window panes in the final edit? The ball on top of the right tower appears to have been cropped as well, though that may be because of the different angle. The archway behind where Bill is standing appears to have been edited as well, but that too could be the angle.

What are the dates for each photo?

Great thread, HB, as was the other photo thread that you started a month or so back.

Thanks, WM--not sure on the chimney, but the panes look as if they may have a tarp or something covering them--or maybe a slight modification over the years?

Perhaps the building has been renovated since the shoot?

That's what I'm thinking. I've spent about 20 minutes researching the building's history and haven't found much.

Maybe it was in more of a state of ruin back in '68, thus no windows. Peering through the fog, I can now make out the chimney in the original (I think).

I believe the place was just a ruin back in 68, hence why they were able to light a fire inside it. I'm sure Bill mentions this in Stone Alone, them lighting a fire that is.

I've not read Stone Alone (Shame on me!). Interesting about the fire...I just assumed that it was man made fog.

Thanks for the lead.

The second shot shows the hotel where they were in the first shot.

SCL--the Palace, just across Vine Street is probably familiar to you, too--a great old building/music hall--i think they still host shows there (have not been for ages--think i saw robert gordon there in about 1986) but whenever i see the Cap building i always think of the stones being dragged across the street for this silly photo op.
