A bit OT, but Melvin Belli's office in San Francisco
(as seen in the Gimme Shelter movie) was located at 722 Montgomery Street.
I don't know if the cockatoo is still there, though.

Hey, HB, on your tour of Altamont, did you ever find out
what happened to Dick Carter?

Man of wealth--must commend you again looking at those--for me, the power of a good then/now is in the fact that if you did an overlay (new atop old) it would match almost precisely--your would lock on almost exactly.

Thank you kindly hbwriter, I agree with you (purists that we are!) and aim to match the old/new as closely as possible as you mention.

In answer to your other question.....I could go to Primrose Hill, but there is not much to go on regarding exact location and I can take a picture of a tree anywhere!!

it was jerry schatzberg's place--his photography studio) he had the stones there several times he told me--he also shot the blonde on blonde cover for dylan-great photographer (and a good guy, too--)

I think he was the boy friend of Julie Christie, for some time in the 60's

yeah, that's my son a couple of years ago--weaned on the Stones--he's seen hem four times and though he's expanded his tastes to lots of classic stuff, it all comes back to the boys

and being in that room--if you don't get a bit of a chill, well... i know most of you get it

This one will not 'overlay' as the venue has changed beyond recognition....

Then : outside the Tin Pan Alley club in Denmark Street, London
Now : the 'TPA' bar which strangely enough has the original 'then' photo on the wall inside!

The original window behind Mick and Keith is now one of the double doors and of course they have sadly done away with the vibrant paintwork. It is worth visiting if ever you are in London as they have newspaper articles regaling the Tin Pan Alley heydays on the walls. About 3 doors down (to the left of this picture as you look at it) is Regent Sounds, a guitar shop (not any old guitar shop, but Europe's largest Fender dealer) which used to be Regent Studios where a certain band's debut album was recorded....

here's a sample from my website
[www.chrisepting.com]

I also write a weekly newspaper column here in huntington beach, ca--along with the column, i also do a weekly then/now feature

Hb: Great stuff. I have your book. Good job.
I wish someone wold do a then/now for the San Fernando Valley where I grew up.
Also, are you familiar with the book Riot On Sunset Strip by Domenic Priore?
It's a book about the LA rock scene in the mid-60s.
Anyway, at the back, he lists hundreds of club, restaurants, etc
with the actual addresses. Could be a good then/now opportunity.
A great read, too. He really knows his stuff.

tk--thanks so much - the valley is a fun place to shoot then/nows - (and i thought that book you mentioned was a great read)

FYI, my personal favorite Valley then/now I've shot (and it was a PAIN to locate!)

And I worked a block away from there for many years.
It's in Sherman Oaks.
BTW, how did you do your detective work for that?

see that real estate building in the background? I ran the address # on every major street in the Valley that Dean would have had to drive through from Hollywood to hit the 5 - checked each out and this one panned out -

if you're around and care about this sort of thing - i'm on a panel out your way (sorta) in a few weeks

I dragged this one over--for what it's worth, my old friend Fred Willard (in this photo) is a then/now freak (and a big Stones fan, too) for my money, he's also the funniest thing in Spinal Tap (which says a lot!)

CBS Then
The outside of the CBS Radio Studios, Hollywood, circa 1938.

The same spot today (It’s now called the KNX building.) Each week for about 8 years I’d write/direct radio commercials here for CompUSA in a small studio upstairs. On this day we came downstairs to the old Sunset Boulevard entrance so I could take this picture. (That’s Fred Willard and Jodi Carlisle comparing the shot—they were voicing the spots that day.) (Inside is the men’s room where Brian Wilson recorded echo harmonies for “Good Vibrations.”)
