I have photos of the basement/helter skelter when I was there for a King Crimson book launch in November 2001. I'll look them out and scan em over the weekend.

And was the Regent Sound studio in the basement or ground floor?

Mathijs

Just found this...

According to a stones/regent sound article in recorder collector magazine from 2000, the basement is where the studio was. According to the article, the Helter Skelter book shop was the studio where the stones recorded.

I think it's a club or something now.

Andrew Oldham keeps refering to the studio in the basement in his books, so I always assumed it was in the basement.

According to two books I have, the address for Regent Sound, from the 1960s,
was 164-166 Tottenham COurt Road, London.
You guys are talking about Denmark Street, which I think is about 1/4 mile away.
Did Regent Sound move from the Tottenham COurt Road address to the one
Denmark Street address?

Sorry about that. I don't know how my comment got into Mathijs' post.
Here's what I wrote:

This link says there were TWO Regent Sound studios.
One off of University Street/ Tottenham Court Road,
which would explain the addresses I mentioned above,
and another studio on Denmark Street.
The link shows various artists that used the studio in early 1967.

Hey Rockman, West Ham is across town from me so I don't know the area, but more to the point......is there a 'THEN' picture recording the scene of this memorable event? Not as it actually took place of course, but simply the venue itself....talking of which, does the Francis Service station still exist I wonder?

I doubt it exists today like it did back then, after a quick search seems there's a few petrol stations on Romford Road.

Perhaps there are some pics from newspapers reporting about the stones pissing there from 1964!?

No sign of it in Rolling With The Stones, however, there are some garage pictures in the Michael Cooper photo book - The Early Stones.

Terry Southern says it's the garage incident, but the pics are most likely from 1966/67, NOT from the incident or even the same garage.

No, that is the exact same location. The Australian closed just over a year ago. It is now Helen Green, an interior design company.
