Is that the same building where the Byrds recorded?

I'm not aware of Dylan doing any sessions in LA, maybe mastering.
I think his first session proper in LA was for Planet Waves at Village Recorders.
It was either NY or Nashville.
BTW (slightly OT) where was the first Springfield album done?
And the second? I know they did some recording at Sunset Sound.

You're correct. Gold Star it was.

BTW, for us Byrd fans, they used to rehearse at 303 North Laurel Avenue,
Los Angeles. The Springfield used to rehearse somewhere on Fountain Ave,
near LaBrea.

Yeah, that would be interesting.
It would be interesting to know, too, exactly where
Kaufmann dumped and burned his body. Apparently, he can't remember
where. It's supposedly near Cap Rock and that makeshift memorial,
but that's not the exact place. So I think it remains a mystery.

TK--i though the mangler did a pretty good job identifying the spot--was his book off the mark?

I didn't read it all, just bits and pieces.
However, I do remember him saying it's near Cap Rock,
just not that exact place where the memeorial is.
I could be mistaken.
I met him a few times at those Gram Fests. Nice guy.

there was a map in his book that set (to the best of his recollection) where the burn happened

This one will not 'overlay' as the venue has changed beyond recognition....

Then : outside the Tin Pan Alley club in Denmark Street, London
Now : the 'TPA' bar which strangely enough has the original 'then' photo on the wall inside!

The original window behind Mick and Keith is now one of the double doors and of course they have sadly done away with the vibrant paintwork. It is worth visiting if ever you are in London as they have newspaper articles regaling the Tin Pan Alley heydays on the walls. About 3 doors down (to the left of this picture as you look at it) is Regent Sounds, a guitar shop (not any old guitar shop, but Europe's largest Fender dealer) which used to be Regent Studios where a certain band's debut album was recorded....

Isn't the Regent Sound a tad further than the mentioned Fender dealer? Last time I was there in the basement of the studio there was a book- and sheet music store.

Mathijs there's a book/sheet music store which also sells some guitars next door or a couple of doors down from Regent Sound. Perhaps you're getting them mixed up?

I was in Regent Sound recently, they have a 4 track machine which was supposedly used in the studio at some point on display with photos of the Stones recording there.

I didn't venture down to their basement so perhaps they sell sheet music etc down there!? It didn't seem like you were allowed access!?

I know the Stones never played here--but is there any record of any of them ever catching a show here? I'm guessing Ronnie might have played here with Beck or Stewart or someone

I remember a few regulars grousing after Mick & Jerry visited here in about '78 - it was soon after Paul Simon had been here, and Linda Ronstadt and some other big names--the feeling was that uptowners were coming down to "slum" it--though Mick did find Living Color here.

For a short while, there was a club around East 4th or 5th Street called Woodie's. I recall that there was also a gallery with that same name right around the corner... for up and coming artists that were named Ron Wood.

The last time I was in Denmark Street was some 5 years ago, and I remember that back then that in the basement there was this bookshop, and not yet a guitar shop.

It's about five doors left of Vintage and Rare isn't? And was the Regent Sound studio in the basement or ground floor?

No, Amsterdam. But London is my favourite city, so I tend to visit it at least once per year.

Ah the old Helter Skelter book shop!

I'm not sure on what floor the studio actually was, but someones blog mentions that the cash desk is where the mixing console used to be so I assume it was on the ground floor.

Some Dutch stones fans visit Denmark Street...

Denigrates his property
A rich man eyes a poor man
And envies his simplicity.

Get up, get up, into something new
Get up, get out, down into something new

This is another one where the surroundings have changed somewhat....

THEN : outside the pub 'The Australian' in Chelsea, London.
NOW : the pub has become 'Helen Green' an Interior Design shop.
