The original vocals on bootlegged outtakes are frequently Jagger doing what he calls his 'vowel movements', basically la-la-la-ing and mumbling any non-sense that fits. I would much rather hear actual lyrics being sung properly even if they've been recorded recently.

It;s terrible -- and this is even worse; Marti Caine singing HTW For a decent stones cover I'd mention Tom Jones and New Model army doing Gimme Shelter, or Rod Stewart's Street fighting man.

I see BMHO more in the tradition of 'Rip This Joint' i.e. The band captured a sense of spontaneity in the moment. She's So Cold sounds much more restrained, even measured to my ears, while BMHO is full on, balls-to-the-wall.

I just looked at the vinyl track list. Sides B,C and D each seem to feature one handbrake turn after another. I can't imagine anyone putting on these sides of music at home, sitting back and enjoying the flow. The mood lurches all over the place. I suppose 'The River' did that a little bit to be fair, but at least the sound was consistent. Human Touch into Streets of Philly in

Break The Spell, filler? I respectfully disagree. A terrific, atmospheric blues and one of the highlights of SW for me. I share the love for Sweethearts Together. Great Tex-Mex feel to it.

That's interesting. My Sony Arc plays the Atmos version via Apple (I think that's right anyway) and that's much easier to listen to than the CD. I might have to buy the vinyl after all.

I think his absolute nadir as a lyricist is the part in 'Oh No Not You Again' that begins 'The moon is yellow..I'm like Jello...' You either laugh or cry....

Absolutely agree. Great songs. Great energy. I’m fascinated to see where the next album takes them. My only caveat is, I’d prefer it not to be so ‘brickwalled’ - but that’s a minor complaint, I was 16 when Some Girls came out. If you had told me then that when the numbers in my age were the other way round the band would make an album this good, I would’ve fainted with shock!

My daughter bought me the puzzle in the white box. Most of the puzzle is a picture of black vinyl, which was the most impossible thing to figure out ever....until I tried (and failed) to vote in the Brits poll )

Treacle Fingers - I usually find myself agreeing with you, but not this time! Blinded by love is pleasant filler at best Blinded by Rainbows (a song addressed to terrorists - you've really got to be at the top of your lyrical game to pull that off) is embarrassingly trite. if you think that Mick wrote Sympathy for the Devil, this is quite a decline.... Compare these ballads with

Hackney Diamonds is the stones best album since I’m girls in my opinion. Those of us on this board like the stones just because of the sound they make so we enjoy albums like Emotional Rescue and Undercover though the quality of the songwriting isn’t that great because we like the guitar sound, the way that Micks voice sounds et cetera. Hackney diamonds stands out from these because of the qualit

I think the 19 songs limit is age-related with the greatest of respect to the band.It must take uo less mental and physical energy to get through 19 separate events than 25. We've seen them start two different songs at the same time on one or two occasions and I think if the band attempted to play 25 songs we might get more of that kind of thing. The second half of the show is carefully c

Aren't single 'releases' just ploys to get radio stations playing the songs and thus keep the album afloat? I can't see any point in a physical single release without bonus tracks.

Your set would sell a lot of hot dogs. I put my expected set list in the 2024 set list thread. Personally I would love to hear 'My Obsession' (which I believe is Brian Wilson's favourite Stones song) and 'Turd on the Run' and 'Have you seen your mother'. I'm also in the minority that considers 'Back to Zero' to be a great funk workout. The ha

I'm certain it wasn't Melody Maker. Funnily enough Sounds gave Black and Blue six (!) stars, but that was Barbera Charone who was angling to write Keith's biography. She also raved about the Knebworth show. i'm tending to think it was Sounds.....thanks for the replies.

When black and blue came out, the music press in England went big on it. I think it was Sounds, or it may have been the NME, but one of them ran huge spreads that reviewed every single and then every album in the band’s career. Before I try buying them on eBay, I wonder if anyone knows which weeks and which magazines it was? If anyone knows they’ve been posted in the articles thread, please poin

I think they'll play all the ones they played at the Racket Club. I hope Shattered was just for NYC - it's painful played that bloody slow. My preferred three: Live By The Sword Bite My Head Off Angry Would be happy to hear the whole damn thing though. What an album.....

Yes absolutely! 'Lies' is great if I'm in the mood for a raucous belter - in fact I'm rather fond of the bootleg version that sounds even more 'punk', but as a song to have in my living room 'DYTIRC' slides by more easily and it is a better song. Similarly I've taken to replacing the horribly tinny 'You Gotta Move' with "I Don't K

I believe Mick thought his voice was buried too deep on Exile. I would leave it as it is. What's wrong with the mix on Steel Wheels? Some less than stellar songs, but it sounds all right...? I'm not sure that the mix is the problem on Voodoo Lounge either. More the lack of a coherent play-through experience. It's a jumble of songs that doesn't make for a satisfying liste
