They always get close but they’ll never drag it across the finish line again, too many missing pieces.
I listen to bootlegs almost exclusively and from that I can tell that one of the worst hits the Stones took in the 80s was Keith not taking Ronnie with him when he went solo.theres a clear break in the quality of their playing.
From Black and Blue,Ronnie’s solo albums, the tours, the constant hanging out together and jamming for ten years they were tight as a fist,by the time they got back together for steel wheels it was lost.the weave was a shadow of its former self.
You lose the Ronnie/Keith thing and the Mick/Keith thing, game over.stick with the catalogue guys.

Interesting view. And not without some truth to it, either, imo.

It goes for the whole band, though. When they stopped spending a lot of time together, something also happened to their musical interplay..

I am too ! smileys with beer Clearly the songs are not finished but I like the vibes from these sessions. And there's some really good singing from Mick.

yes...these songs sound like a real band trying to work through them....still listening tho these leaks and loving them as much almost as B & L...same sense of "vigor" and "realness"....well as close as they can get maybe...

Given the dedication/commitment/passion the Stones put in their recordings, there should be an archive release of their studio sessions.

I guess I've not thought of it but in the way that you say it, it's weird - 3 songs on BLACK AND BLUE, obviously the next 2 albums, just a few on TATTOO YOU (Start Me Up, Little T&A, Black Limousine, Neighbours and No Use In Crying) and ending with UNDERCOVER - there's a sound. It's the Ronnie Wood Rolling Stones sound.

After that, forget it. He was merely used for highlights - drums on Sleep Tonight, the solo in Rock And A Hard Place, the beautiful slide solo in Out Of Tears, the lead in Don't Stop, the slide solo in Rough Justice... not a whole lot else that stands out that I can think of.

Which is a shame and probably what you were getting at.

In 2001 Mick said he didn't think there would be an album ("complete album" is what he said), just "something". Keith talked of there being an album.

They announced the LICKS tour before they started recording for not quite a month with apparently just the intention of having "something" to add to the hits album.

That's not much time.

And... they didn't get together to write and do demos like they had been doing the previous 3 LPs.

Somewhere in all of this, with Keith's recent statement about Mick's 40 songs or whatever, Mick said this in 2002, "I love writing songs - whether they're good or not is another matter..."

They could make another album that would fool a lot of people but I don’t want to see another clunker added to the catalog.
They’re doing fine as a live act, the people still show up in big numbers and they make a lot of money it’s not the worst way to go out.

Even if they wanted to they’re too old to spend 14 hour nights in a studio doing coke, drinking whiskey and hammering riffs and partial lyrics into great songs.
Stu’s gone,Bils gone,Nicky’s gone there’s no Jimmy Miller and in their place you have mediocrity at every position,it was a great moment in time but it has passed.

They need to just can it and put a number from Decembers children or out of our heads into the set or something and people will be happy.

Well well well, my insta karma strikes again.

1.) Thank You for sharing link.

2.) My 1st WeTransfer took 20 minutes, helplessly building my expectations.

After painful starts to listen to songs 1-3
angonizing to try and understand the lyrics only to realize:
They haven’t been written yet.

I remember once again my frustrating dislike of uncompleted RS songs.
So sorry.
I’m a bad pirate :-/
