Report from RockerParis on today's rehearsals here : [rockerparis.blogspot.fr]

I don't know about the rest of you, but from reading the Rocker Paris blog account of the rehearsals I find it hilarious that One More Shot went off "with several false starts and Mick reading the lyrics on his laptop". Mick and the band can't seem to get the hang of such a basic, straightforward song, or maybe they just don't like it all that much. No one should expect to hear this one live--unless Mick is prepared to phone it in via teleprompter.

I was there, so I can tell you exactly what happened. This is not about false starts or what is right or wrong. It is a matter about how to reproduce something they made in studio in August this year. They could have finished off the song on the first take, just like they could have finished of the restart of That's How Strong My Love is after the first try, but they want it different so they simply do it again and again.

I am sure if Bolt is doing a 100 meters start he might do it just 90% but he will not quit running, so this is just like doing it differently and trying options of how to perform the starting, ending and all the great stuff in the middle. And if Keith hits the wrong cords at the beginning of Brown Sugar, or your wife forget to say congratulations on your anniverary date, is that the end of the world? The Rolling Stones are about emotions and blues and rock'n'roll, I am not into analyzing every riff, bad and beat, just like you do not analyze a kiss. You enjoy it.

Hear that Mathijs?

@ DandelionPowderman - The sound was fabulous, crystal clear, especially compared to the sound maelstrom of the Trabendo

In particular you could hear every note Keith played, unfortunately he was playing sideways most of the time facing the rest of the band so I couldn't see as much as I would have liked, especially playing some guitar myself, but it was really terrific overall...I can only recall one bum note when he was playing a lick during That's How Strong . Others say afterwards they'd heard other mistakes but weren't.

I think we were getting the sound straight from their amps and he was the loudest, it was striking and almost a bit worrying for "No Expectations" which is such a gentle song but he accompanied Mick's acoustic with great subtlety. His rhythm licks on "Worried About You" were fabulous too, just like in that friggin' promo video for Tattoo You I used to watch as a kid.

The man is fine, I'd even say he's on fire, at one point he walked to the bathroom on the right, just under our nose and as we were calling him he turned around with a big smile and cracked a laugh, then he came back and literally jumped back on stage...

I'm still reeling from the the fact that they let us in, we'd talked about that among us several times outside and we always came to the conclusion that there was too much at stake for them to take any risks...I guess they got some good vibes from the regulars and the crew was still very watchful inside, as they should be. Some of them had big smiles though when they saw the fans swept off their feet like that.

Thanks a lot, gotdablouse!

Can't wait for November 25 now smileys with beer

Thanks Bjørnulf et all. Looks like there is still some spark in the boys. Good to hear after all. (Had to struggle to find the Danish ö (ø) on my keyboard. It's alt+0248 on Swedish keypads). By the way, did you know that Björnulf means Bearwolf in English? And that ö or ø is pronounced like the vowel in "sir" or "stir". At least in the name Björn.

Yes. Bjørn means bear and Ulf means wolf. I asked my mother why they picked two of our most wild animals in Norway for my name, rather than naming me after some grandfather, but it could not be explained. I am happy withy that. But I do not like it when people call me Bjorn, it is a different person and a different name.

Back to the show. I am impressed by the security people. We are nice people but this was done on short notice and no extra security. They gave us all we wanted and were very kind. I will tell you more about how the band sounded later. Short version: Keith was doing lots of great guitar playing. same with Ronnie. They were so relaxed without a crowd. We were not a crowd. More like some files on the wall. Five minutes into the session they were back to work and had forgotten about us. Now I know how relaxed they work and how much of a teamwork it is. They all contribute to working on making old and new songs work, and it is not about fixing errors, but getting them to work they want them to sound like in their version.

Absolutely amazing news. Now us London fans have to find out where the production rehearsals are taking place. Back in 95 it was in Docklands. I remember writing a story about it as I worked on a local newspaper at the time. Local residents complained because of a fireworks display.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
14- Live with me
15- One more shot
with several false starts or work in progress and Mick reading the lyrics on his laptop
16- No expectations
with Mick on acoustic guitar, Ronnie on Weissenborn lap slide guitar
17- Worried about you
With Mick on piano and nice falsetto
18- That's how strong my love is
with several different endings
19- Little red Rooster

To thank fans for standing outside in the rain and cold for the last 3 weeks listening to the rehearsals from outside and before the band is leaving for NYC , The Rolling Stones have let in 40 lucky fans and some members of the studio staff who are seeing the Stones rehearsing for the first time as only the RS team was allowed into the room.
After leaving jackets and bags and , of course, cell phones & cameras into the lobby we were escorted to a small balcony facing the tiny stage where the stones have been rehearsing since Oct 1st.
Chuck on the far left behind his keyboards with Bernard in front of him, Ronnie on the left, Charlie dead center stoical behind his drum kit, Keith on the right and Darryl on the far right. And Mick all over the place.
We can see that there are paintings stuck on the wall underneath us with the setlist written on it in big letters for each day they have rehearsed. I'de like to get a pic of that as we only have the setlist from Oct 11 onwards (courtesy of us)
They welcomed us with a few kind words and hand-signs
Even though the guys are working, you can see that they're "playing" their part: Ronnie's fooling around a bit, Keith with his trademark "kick" for the first song "Live with Me". Small gig just for us.
After that you can see they are back working properly as if we were not there watching every of their moves.
"One more shot" is started several times with indications from Chuck Leavell who is coordinating the work on the songs, especially some of the transitions (OMS or Thats How Strong My Love Is") He is guiding the Stones through it, he's the musical director and Mick Jagger the conductor.

It's really Incredible to attend such an event, we can see the Rolling Stones at work.
And when Keith is missing a start, he looks at us with a grin meaning " yeah I @#$%& it up, sorry That's my fault" with everyone cheering but not too loud as we've been instructed not to act like fools as the band is working.
Some people around me have tears in their eyes and can't believe their luck.
This is the FIRST TIME in the Rolling Stones history that they are letting fans in for a rehearsal.

For the next song the roadies 'standing to attention' are changing the guitars and Ronnie is having is Weissenborn ready and Mick is on acoustic guitar. Michel standing on my left and who is the French RS specialist is telling me " They're going to play No Expectations". Hes' right.

For the next song Mick is behind the keys with his iMac in front of him for "Worried about you", Nice falsetto. One take.

MIck is back on the mike in front of the stage for "That's how strong my love is", once again we can see The Stones at work as they are trying different endings with Chuck and Mick's indications.
All along these rehearsals in france Mick's voice has been loud and clear: incredible.
He's done it almost everyday (except week-ends) for the last 4 weeks, 4 hours every day.

We've been there for more than 45 min and mick's assistant is asking him if we have to go, "One more song" he said and we have a blues one " Little red rooster" One take.

The whole band is thanking us several times once again for being there.
we're making our way out in the cold night but we have stars in our eyes forever

50 min of private rehearsals with The Rolling Stones, once in a lifetime.

Incredible to see the Stones rehearsing the songs with the "false" starts ("One more shot"), the different endings possible ("That's our strong...") the indications, the work, the different guitars, the roadies 'standing to attention'... just incredible
Nice cosy studio with carpets , sofas, catering, dozens of guitars
And a very nice team: security, roadies...

A big thank you to The Rolling Stones to have welcomed us for this 50min session

This was great for the 50 or so fans that were there, but in reality it smells like a publicity stunt by the band ,so that maybe they get some good will from the fans, who have been very upset about tickets prices and the like,it succeeded in the sense that most people here are going gaga over this, but in reality it doesn't change the general perception of the band being nothing more than a bunch of greedy selfish bastards..

Bjørnulf, congratulations! You finally succeeded to see the Stones during their rehearsals!
I am glad for you and all the other fans who could make it.
Yesterday, I was to go over there to wait outside, me too. Unfortunately, at the last minute I could not leave Paris.
Bjørnulf, thanks a lot for your review.

That would have been fantastic and much more special and unique than any show IMO.

Great gesture and something that as far as I'm aware they've never done before.

Absolutely.

It happened only one time before. A very ill fan lined up daily to see them arriving and leaving. On the second last day of rehearsals they invited this fan in to watch rehearsals.

That fan passed away six months later. His dreams came true.

Really? Lovely story. When was that?

Whatever we think of the way The Stones have dealt with the 'handling' of these 4 upcoming gigs,I feel that most of us fans are realy happy this invite to the rehearsals had happened. I for one am so happy for all those fans who were in the right place at the right time. If the location had been more publicised than it was,I don't think it would ever have happened. It seems to be common knowledge today. Too many fans would turn up.Too many fans will probably turn up today. 40 or 50 fans is O.K. for a private rehearsal with just the necessery staff but any more would be too much. winking smiley

Actually the location was well known since the Trabendo to anyone looking for it but the number of people on average must gave gone up from 10 to 20 on average and yesterday was 30/40 then 32 when they let us in. Today it's about 20, bottom line only die hards show up ;-)
