What's your favorite Stones period or era?
Posted by: Loudei ()

My favorite Stones period of time is got to be the 1977-1981 Stones... I don't know what is it about it that makes gravite towards those years. I love the music, the image , the style and the way they played live... I know they made better music during the Taylor years ... it's charlie and bill's post 76' playing and chemistry , or the disco fusion...

That's what I tend to lean towards, although 1975-83 really.

I think the 1965-20XX period is my favorite Rolling Stones era (where XX is an unknown variable).

There is something good in all eras, but the most interesting one for me is the 1966-1968 era - for the moment thumbs up

It's very difficult categorising the Stones' output this way, though, since what they did in 1968 could be miles ahead quality-wise than what they did in, say, 1974...

It's easy to dislike 1973 - 1974.

Summer 65 to Autumn 66.

May 65 - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

Sept 65 - Get Off Of My Cloud

Feb 66 - 19th Nervous Breakdown

May 66 - Paint It Black

Sept 66 - Have You Seen Your Mother Baby, Standing In The Shadows

I actually think that in general the best pop singles of all time were released between autumn 65 and autumn 66 but I've widened that a bit here to include Satisfaction as I think it's the Stones' greatest ever single.

Agreed, there is something good in it for everybody. It's just that I feel very attracted to Taylor's playing. I remember my brother coming home with ya ya's (I think 1970) and I thought: "who the @#$%& is this solo guitarist?". If it wasn't for Mick Taylor's playing I probably never would have become a Stones /Taylor-era fan. The time you grow up in is a very determining factor to ones musical genes I think, and sure it is very healthy to evolve your musical taste. For obvious reasons it never happened with the Rolling Stones to me.

For me there are two periods that I prefer and they seem to reflect the studio albums I prefer.

67-72 and 78-83

On music the first period and on image the second period.

Late 70s early eighties the Stones seemed more decadent to me. Maybe that's because that's when I started getting into them but when I look back at the videos, everyone seemed a bit messed up on drugs, heavy eyeliner, older, jaded.

They seemed so untouchably cool.

It has to be that middle era. Maybe even just 68-72. You really can't logically say that isn't their best era, and ultimately your favorite. Unless for some reason you hate those albums (which you probably wouldn't be a Stones fan then), those songs are your favorites. We've just been trained to like the less popular stuff.

On par with that, you really can't discount the early years leading up to 68. They really changed the game and their 5 albums before Beggars are so friggen solid.

And then their post Exile albums up to Tattoo You are, on a whole, very very good. Its such a cliche to make fun of how many albums the Stones put out, but its just realistic to say that about 11 out of the 18 albums between 64-81 are just excellent. Which is mindblowing to think.

The run of albums of Out Of Our Heads, December's Children, Aftermath, and Between The Buttons is arguably just as good as Beggars, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Exile. They all had classics, and aside from the former run being a bit more primitive, those albums still hold as solid all the way through. At least IMO

1980-82, because that was when I discovered them. A great album (TY) and a colourful tour. Retrospectively, of course, the 1968-72 "era" is the best one.

I think you've nailed it on the head...1968 onwards the stones sounded far more evolved and sophisticated, maybe better material coupled with a better producer?

Anyway, I'll disagree the albums were as good prior to 68...they all had classics yes, but not bullet proof. I think the strength up to 67 anyway was in the singles, not to take anything away from the early albums.
