since Keith (and Ronnie!) played Dan Armstrongs at Barcelona and San Sebastian,
i reckon we'd better have some shots of the one(s) Keith's been seen with on rare recent occasions:

this is from 1997, and it was posted by our cohort Stones-relics; Keith was given this guitar as a gift,
i guess by the fellow in the photo. maybe Stones-relics will give us some more details:

- 1997, courtesy of Stones-relics

here's a shot from MSG, september 13th 2005, where Keith used the Dan Armstrong for Bitch:

the gallant Txussilvestr3 and 999 have told us that at Barcelona Keith used a Dan Armstrong
for Ain't Too Proud to Beg & Sympathy for the Devil; 999 told us that during Sympathy
Woody had some technical trouble and switched to a Dan Armstrong in the middle of the song,
makin it i bet the first time both Stones guitarists were using Dan Armstrongs on stage at the same time.
sure hope someone got photos of that, and will post them for us! meanwhile, here's a direly blurry youtube clip
of part of the Barcelona SFTD:

(thanks jjf5 for posting that)
you can just barely see Keith's DA - but you can hear it all right!

at San Sebastian Keith used a Dan Armstrong for SFTD; Woody used one for one number.
hope some photos/footage of those turn up as well ...

ps: here's a link to a thread with some photos of Ronnie's Dan Armstrong(s): [www.iorr.org]

Here's the man with his Dan Armstrong in Barcelona. First shot is Ain't Too Proud to Beg, second is Sympathy. Sorry for poor picture quality.

great great great - that San Sebastian SFTD has a *way* better view of Keith's guitar than the one from Barcelona.
and i'll discreetly amend the reference to which number Ronnie used his on. thank you Txussilvestr3!

Cool pics those 2,
Pic#1: Ian Dickson
Pic#2: I think Neil Zlozower - I'm pretty sure this is the scan Leonard Keringer posted 1-2 years ago - from a "think-cardboard-poster" series

Terrific reads in this thread - so Keith's guitar this year might the one he recieved as a gift from...a fan?...in 1997 ?

Hm, a question of taste. Would you want to play with Keith's chest hair?

Ah, I know that guy in the picture with Keith! That's my friend Dave! I remember when he told me the story of giving the Dan Armstrong to Keith when the Stones played Oakland in '97. Really cool to see Keith playing an Armstrong again after all this time. Dave will be happy!

thanks ChrisM, and say heya to Dave for me, okay? and if he and you feel like it,
some more details about that fantastic gift and/or the bestowal of it would be great to hear.

I'll ask Dave if he is willing to share the details of the meeting. I remember it fairly well but I think that the telling of the tale would be be better done by the man himself. More on this as it develops...

Guitar Question for Mathijs, sssoul, etc.

Is that a Dan Armstrong Keith is playing in the photo shown on the Lisbon reviews page? If so, how long has it been since we've seen him play one? If not, what is it?

Thanks, guys.

Yep, a reissue Japanese Ampeg Dan Armstrong.

If Keith is playing the guitar given to him by my friend Dave, which is referred to in the thread above, then it is not a Japanese reissue but an orignal Dan Armstrong from the early '70s. Dave had two of them, one which he gave to Keith.

Mathijs, please expound on the source of of your information.

Yeah, a bit sloppy on my part.

Let's see - Keith had two Dan Armstrong's between '69 and '71. (or one?)

* one (or two) got stolen @ Nellcote in '71.
* no D.A. guitar in the mean time.....till
* 1997 David / friend of ChrisM, gives a D.A. as a present to Keith.

2005 - Keith appears with a D.A. for the A Bigger Bang Tour and once in while it also appears in 2007.

Ronnie changes guitars in the middle of a song and both, Keith & Ronnie are playing Dan Armstrong's on one song?

That sound about right but I haven't seen pic yet with both Keith and Ronnie using a DA. Also Keith did use a DA sparingly during the '72 tour so it is really hard to say which DA he's using now unless someone has more information that can conclusively prove which one it is.

I haven't seen a good enough picture yet to tell whether it's the recent re-issue or an original.
I suspect it's the former. Ronnie has one kicking around too doesn't he ?
I suspect they were maybe each given one from the new production.
A good enough picture will answer our questions. There are visible differences...the bridge being one.

All pictures I have seen of Keith and Wood with DA guitars after the 70's were with reissues. Original DA's had a simple wooden bridge with a strip of fret wire with notches were the strings rested. A cheap design, but it's impossible to intonate the guitar. Combined with perspex body and wooden neck, this guitar was almost impossible to keep in tune. Check out Stay With Me by the Faces, or any '69 or '70 Stones gig: it's always out of tune.

on the new '97 and recent reproductions, they changed the bridge to a fully adjustable one, and made some changes to neck/body joint, and reports are that it stayes in tune better now, although it is still not perfect.

Keith had one DA in '69, and purchased a second for the '70 and 71 tour. Both were stolen in July '71, and replaced with a new one, which Keith used briefly on the first few gigs of the '72 tour. Since then he didn't use one until 2005.

Yep,
They've altered the neck joint to make it more stable. I've only played one briefly [and it's still heavy!] but other folks say it's made a nice difference in that respect.
Kent Armstrong is reproducing the pickups for the latest re-issues.
Previous copies or "reissues" of the DA Plexi haven't been especially faithfull to the original design if truth be told. The current one is...but with genuine improvements where sensible and appropriate.

this beautiful series of shots of Keith in Lisbon with his Dan Armstrong was taken by our gallant cohort Mr Jimmy -
it looks like Keith knew we were yearning for a better look at this guitar :E

thank you Mr Jimmy ~ thank you Keith!

Keith was playing a replica of the long lost Zemaitis during U.S. leg of Bigger Bang.

Don't know if that has been mentioned here in this great, long thread.

Also, don't know if it's been mentioned/posted but WHAT is he playing in the Silver Train video? Some big white MONSTER of a guitar from 73 era!

yeah it has, and there's also a thread about Keith's and Ron's Zemaitae: [www.iorr.org]

a Gibson SG. that would be in the Keith's Lesser-Known Gibson's thread: [iorr.org]

seems like i might as well give you the link to the Ratbag Boogie Guitar Thread index while i'm at it: [www.iorr.org]

Nice. Thx.

I thought it was more along the lines of the guitar Dylan was playing in the 76 Hard Rain Tv concert and tour, but, alas, it's an SG.

I'm almost certain that white SG is in the Boston Hard Rock Cafe.

Now I'm trying trying to figure out when that pic of Keith sitting on Charlie's riser is from. Obviously 69- era but when? rehearsals?

um ... what photo? give us a glimmer, please -
update: oh that one - the Saville Theatre, december 14th 1969. before/between shows, obviously.
it doesn't really belong in that thread either, but ... why are we discussing it here??
