True enough Ian, but when Ronnie stated that after they 'hit the wall' they might dump everything and have to 'start from scratch', it leaves the impression that those sessions came to a standstill with no point in moving forward.
Sure they can get back to them in the hopes of working them out, but not sure that's being very productive this late in the game. Like a stalemate in a game of chess - you can keep going in circles with no positive outcome in sight.

It looks like some people just don't get it: the Stones is not a priotity anymore, 2 band members had childrens during the last 6-8 months, another one will be 76 years old in 100 days, private life is about 80-90% of their time now and with all the guys on their 70's is perfect, they won't work their ass off after 55 years, a new album will be released at some point, it could be this year or the next one, they just released a new one and is still selling great, it looks like there's no need to release another one so soon and the band knows it, the record company too and if they play a couple of big shows in Europe this summer sales should remain strong during all 2017.
The Stones are slowing down people, we should be happy if the band remains 10% active during the next years.

It is a bit of hopeful news, but it would have been so much sweeter if Mick said, "Keith and I are writing some new songs together."

"I was working on it quite recently. We've got a long way to go, but I think it sounds really great and I'm looking forward to carrying on with that." MJ
"I've been writing this week. I've written a lot of new songs lately..." MJ
"(...) But i think it would be nice to do new songs and go in a new direction with them" MJ

Mick's job is to keep this alive in the media. Obviously, PR is one of the things he excels that. Mick saying that he's working on new songs, etc. has nothing to do with if or when the Stones will record a new album.
A new Stones album or a Jagger solo album with Stones overdubs (like 'Doom and Gloom')?!

A 24 years old song new?
Tattoo You has songs from 1972 to 1981, the oldest one had 9 years at time of release.
Now on 2017 we have to go to 12-13 years ago to find the NEW outtakes, some of them (Nothing On Me, Illusion, Trouble) were used by Keith on his latest solo album.
Mick has over 40 new songs written during the last 10 years, he did use 2/3 songs on Superheavy + Doom and Gloom 5 years ago, Keith has 2/3 riffs or ideas, very much on the "One More Shot" type I bet and a ballad.
We'll get that, the best of Mick's demos (or the most 'Stones sounding' ones) with a couple of Keith contributions here and there.
After 55 years we can't ask for more, a decent set of new songs at this point, not more than that.
