The last 30 years? You answered it. That's:
DIRTY WORK - their worst album ever
STEEL WHEELS - mall music
VOODOO LOUNGE - Stones By Numbers
BRIDGES TO BABYLON - All over the map
A BIGGER BANG - Not really sure...

Are any of those as vital as GHS, IORR, BAB, SG, ER, TY and U?

No.

That's a part of the problem.

Cut the post-DW-Albums down to 40 minutes, remove the songs that are unpleasing and you get albums just as vital as above mentioned records. Even more vital than GHS & IORR which imo are rather sleepy than vital. DW is the only album that needs no changes, it is their last great album and a pleasure to listen to just the way it is.

Regarding Steel Wheels, I am afraid it can´t be rescued, after removing the weak spots remain just five good-very good songs, four of them you can find on the A-side, one on the B-side. One might add Fancy Man Blues and in desperate need of decent songs the later recorded Highwire, but that still would not make a full album. Aahhh... wait a minute, there´s the B-side of Highwire... and to get a full-length-album for Christ´s sake include the rather boring Slipping Away - so one might be able to create a Steel-Wheels-album just as vital as their 70s-output:

Sad Sad Sad
Mixed Emotions
Hold On To Your Hat
Fancy Man Blues
Hearts For Sale
Highwire
Sexdrive
Break The Spell
Slipping Away

AAB after some changes in the sequencing and removal of some weak tracks would turn out to be a very vital album.

It seems the "A Bigger Bang" album & tour was the bands low point. At least they didn't try to tour with Dirty Work.

Makes the 50th anniversary comeback that much more amazing.

The band continues to surprise and do its best work immediately after it hits a bottom.

Nothing they've done post-UNDERCOVER is or ever could be as vital as anything they did in the 1970s with editing, especially the excellent GHS and the fantastically hazy IORR. But. Shortening the albums and replacing songs does improve them. STEEL WHEELS as it should've been released:

Sad Sad Sad
Mixed Emotions
Terrifying
Hearts For Sale
Blinded By Love
Almost Hear You Sigh (not only is it a great song but it was nominated for a Grammy)
Fancy Man Blues
Wish I'd Never Met You
Break The Spell
Slipping Away

Side A (22:30 minutes):

1. Rough Justice
2. Let Me Down Slow
3. She Saw Me Coming
4. Streets Of Love
5. Back Of My Hand
6. This Place Is Empty

Side B (21 OR 20 minutes):

7. Oh No, Not You Again
8. Sweet Neo Con
9. Biggest Mistake
10. Laugh, I Nearly Died (OR It Won't Take Long)
11. Infamy

Just my opinion. I think this is an excellent album. Their best/most consistent since Tattoo You. Only problem is its too long, but vinyl length would fix that problem and would make a kick ass album. Just my two cents.

Rolling Freak I like your setlist. Only change I would make is replace She Saw Me Coming with Under The Radar.

There are many:
-Rough Justice***
-It Won´t Take Long
-Rain Fall Down***
-This Place Is Empy
-Oh No Not You Again***
-Sweet Neo Con
-Look What The Cat Dragged In***
-Driving Too Fast

***-songs are my top favorites

ABB was the first album I liked from the start since DW.
With SW, VL & B2B I had huge problems and still have.

Rough Justice
Let Me Down Slow
It Won't Take Long
Back Of My Hand
She Saw Me Coming
Biggest Mistake
This Place Is Empty
Dangerous Beauty
Laugh, I Nearly Died

Look What The Cat Dragged In and Driving Too Fast are decent. The rest of the album is complete crap.

I have a soft spot for Biggest Mistake as well..

agreed on all counts - including Biggest Mistake!
And I'll raise ya... I have a soft spot for Rain Fell Down; ever since that semi-blues funk cover by Ana Popovic... (there's a couple of live versions of hers on Youtube etc.; I dunno about àll of these. But I do like her take on it on her album "Can You Stand The Heat"!)

PLus I go with Mandu as well, and give a right honorable mention for Laugh I Nearly Died - Jagger at his best!

Apart from all this, I only have high regards for Driving Too Fast, Infamy, Streets Of Love, even Sweet Neo Con (Yép! That drum rhythm 'slip' of Charlie, at the very start of the track, still does it for me!)

All in all - as you might have guessed by now - I consider this a very enjoyable, rather good album even.

I like the album as well, but the mix destroys it a bit. That's the problem I have with Rain Fall Down as well. Some of the Stones funk magic is gone there (to my ears anyway). Haven't heard the cover version. Will check it out thumbs up

There are a lot of cool things going on on Laugh, Coming, Driving and Neocon as well.

I still contend its their best post Tattoo You album. Far and away. I know thats an unpopular opinion.

Rough Justice is nothing special, but for being a rocker I think it gets the job done and is one of their better latter day upbeat ones.

Let Me Down Slow, IMO, is a gem and an underrated EXCELLENT late era song. Seriously, I don't know how people don't love this one, its great.

Filled with other great ones. It Won't Take Long, She Saw Me Coming, Sweet Neo Con are passably enjoyable songs to me but yes, nothing really special. I think Oh No Not You Again is a great rocker. This Place Is Empty is a great Keith song. Biggest Mistake is a cool difference on the album. I mean, you basically have a 40 minute record there. Add Back Of My Hand and then one of the other 6 songs (your choice) and you have a solid 10 track old school length record that I personally think is great.

I agree. It's a very good song, both in terms of writing and playing.

However, it is a bit Aerosmith-ish melodically, like some other latter-day Mick rock/pop-songs. There are quite a few Stones fans who don't like that stuff. I do, though (when it's good).

laugh i nearly died

is the best on the album, sounds as if its done in tattoo you style.

also good is

rough justice
this place is empty
infamy
rainfall down
biggest mistake
back of my hand

the rest of the album varies between ok and crap, and in terms of quality a bigger bang is about the same as voodoo lounge and bridges to babylon, which could all have done with being cut by 3 or 4 songs, taken from the bottom of the pile and even replaced by a couple of cover songs or outtakes.

"Laugh, I Nearly Died" is very good.
"Rough Justice", "Rain Fall Down" and "Oh No, Not You Again" are okay too.
I can't remember the rest, but it didn't impress me much. Keith's songs were terrible, and that's coming from a "keithette".

Rough Justice is great and should be played live more often, imho.

That this song is «terrible» is a headscratcher. It was very good in concert, too.

Laugh I nearly died is almost a masterpiece, then I like Rough Justice, It won't take long, She saw me coming and Rain fall down.

I don't care for the album as a whole, but like the following songs:

Rain Fall Down
Biggest Mistake
Dangerous Beauty
Laugh, I Nearly Died
Look What the Cat Dragged In

There are a few others that I don't mind, but too many I thought were substandard.

<... This Place Is Empty ...>

After "Losing My Touch" (which I didn't like either) and "Slipping Away" (which I like very much), this one is just more of that same thing, one too many times.
I don't know, it lacks the touch of "something special".
