Well it is all taste, but to say Their Satanic is better than Physical Graffiti? Whew, that is a stretch. Physical is probably Zep's best album...

The match ended 2-2 after 90 minutes but in the last few seconds of extra time a pin perfect cross from Keith was nodded in off the post by Jagger to win the game.

Don't get me wrong...if Mick got a bit more nostalgic and opened up the vaults Led Zep would have trouble keeping up...Zep has been better to its fans in that fashion...

LA75 was a hell of a start Mick...it needs a proper release

Don't Be A Stranger was a major setback though...

Let's go by the years Zep was in existence or sort of, separated by a year at most:

Beggars vs. Led Zeppelin 1 - 0
LIB vs. LZ II 2-0
Sticky vs. LZ III 3-0
Exile vs. LZ IV 4-0
GHS vs. Houses of the Holy 4-1
IORR vs. Physical Graffiti 4-2
Black and Blue vs. Presence 5-2
Some Girls vs. In Through The Out Door 5-3
Emotional Rescue vs. Coda 6-3

yore winner and still champion, THE ROLLING STONES!

How can one compare an LP released in 1964 to one released five years later? There is quite a bit of musical evolution in between. You're better off comparing Zeppelin 2 to Let It Bleed, for example.

24 -22 Exile would swing it more the Stones way though and I would switch to have Black & Blue in there

It is not possible to compare some bands to another in my opinion, because they are so special unic and maby one of a kind. For example Led Zeppelin, Queen, ABBA. It is unquestionable that they are brilliant and on they´re own path. This opinion has nothing to do with my taste for them. I listen to Led Zeppelin but not ABBA, Queen or the Beatles but its beyond a doubt that they are superb in what they do.

Don't take me to task on that one Big Al...you can blame 'Come On' who started that comparison.

You may notice that I actually had already redressed that issue in a subsequent post.

The Stones have more memorable and classic singles as well as albums over a longer period of time (I'm not the counting the 80s & 90s).

The Stones were classic before LZ formed (though I liks a lot of Led Zep).

Stones vs. Beatles, that's a different story.

It's easy..it's they're debut-albums and so on ...I could have done it with Dylans debut from -62 vs Ron Sexsmith from -91...

i don't know about where you live but here in richmobd virginia i can tell you the classic rock station has 17 led zeppelin songs in regular rotation and thats just from the first 4 albums. add to that 11 songs in rotation from the rest of the bands catalof and that means zeppelin 9 albums have 28 songs in rotation on the classic rock radio station here. i have heard a few other songs on the radio but not on a regular basis.

lets look at the stomes now and see how many albums it takes to get 28 songs on regular rotation here. it took my 16 albums into the rolling stones career to get to 28 songs in regular roation here. i had to count from the 1st album all the way to some girls including a few non album singles released in the timespan before i finally got to 28 songs that my local classic rock station plays at least 2 times a week. the stones only have 2 albums after some girls that contain songs played on a regular basis here and thats only 3 more songs.

not sure what you are talking about the stones have MORE of something. the only reason they have more songs is because they have more albums and even that where i live is only a tiny difference in songs played on the radio despite the station playing songs from twice as many albums

We have our own 'Classic Rock' radio-station here in Sweden too. Could it be that they concentrate more on Metal than pure Rock-music based on Chuck Berrys stuff that Zep is more represented there?

Great comparison, and I agree with all your choices! (OK, maybe I'd choose IORR vs. Graffiti, but that's just because I prefer the Stones. grinning smiley) (LIB and LZ II are really close, though. If it's Sticky vs. LZ IV, though, going by the exact year, 1971. what are the results? I might actually chose LZ IV there. Too close to call. Actually, there isn't any contest - it's Ram! I kid you not. smiling smiley)

not really because i would say the heavier bands other than zeppelin hardly get any play. deep purple only has "highway star", "hush", "smoke of the water" and "woman from tokyo" in regular rotation plus i have heard 3 other songs. alice cooper only has "no more mr. nice guy", "schools out" and "elected" in regular rotation plus i have heard 5 other alice cooper songs played on the radio. cactus, who many say were the american led zeppelin, only have 1 song i have ever heard on the radio. thats really why i stopped listening to the radio and only listen to cd's in the car is because the playlist seems so small for some bands and huge for others. if i had to guess there are probably 36 beatles tunes in regular rotation on 96.5 the planet which is the classic rock station near me.

anyone on this forum who lives in the USA can back me up that "stairway to heaven" is the most played song on classic rock radio ever. its played so often and the intro is so easy to learn that some guitar stores actually have a "NO STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN" sign hanging in the staores near the guitar demo area

Love both groups, and I will say that Stairway to Heaven doesn't get near the airplay that it got even 20 years ago. You'll hear most of their other tunes far more than that one today.

not sure what you are talking about the stones have MORE of something. the only reason they have more songs is because they have more albums and even that where i live is only a tiny difference in songs played on the radio despite the station playing songs from twice as many albums

We have our own 'Classic Rock' radio-station here in Sweden too. Could it be that they concentrate more on Metal than pure Rock-music based on Chuck Berrys stuff that Zep is more represented there?

not really because i would say the heavier bands other than zeppelin hardly get any play. deep purple only has "highway star", "hush", "smoke of the water" and "woman from tokyo" in regular rotation plus i have heard 3 other songs. alice cooper only has "no more mr. nice guy", "schools out" and "elected" in regular rotation plus i have heard 5 other alice cooper songs played on the radio. cactus, who many say were the american led zeppelin, only have 1 song i have ever heard on the radio. thats really why i stopped listening to the radio and only listen to cd's in the car is because the playlist seems so small for some bands and huge for others. if i had to guess there are probably 36 beatles tunes in regular rotation on 96.5 the planet which is the classic rock station near me.

smiling smiley Anyway...on may own 'radiostation' zep has only 'Whole lotta love' and 'Heartbreaker' rotating while Stones is there with 300 smoking rockers...

anyone on this forum who lives in the USA can back me up that "stairway to heaven" is the most played song on classic rock radio ever. its played so often and the intro is so easy to learn that some guitar stores actually have a "NO STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN" sign hanging in the staores near the guitar demo area

Maybe where you are that is true. Where I am my rock station actually has several 'Get the led out' medleys during any given day (but I attribute that to the station's respect for the band than for any real demand stats indicating they must do so). Maybe Led Zep is more popular or sell more records, too. But I'm not doing that kind of research, not the point of my remarks.

I'm just trying to be as objective as I can and put these two into context of rock history (without bowing down to personal taste). While Led Zep is great and have great output, I still believe the Stones beat out Zep in the overall context of rock history.

The same if the Beatles are included in this. I'd put them over the Stones and certainly over LZ. Context, see.
