Black and Blue, great LP

I think Black and Blue is a really great LP from the seventies. Not a bad song and great guitarplayers. What do you think?

I really like it. Particularly Hand Of Fate and Crazy Mama. I only dislike two songs, Melody and Fool To Cry.

Melody has that great horn chart at the end, but yeah, the rest kind of fizzles.

It's been said many times before but if Melody & Fool To Cry were replaced with Worried About You & Slave from the same sessions, the lp would have been a 70's plastic soul killer, easily besting Young Americans.

i agree black and blue would be great, if some songs were replaced by others, and more were added on.

but they wernt, so judging black and blue on its own merits, its a great sounding album, buts its too short and as such needs most of the songs to be strong, which they are not.

crazy mama
memory motel

are the high points.

hand of fate
fool to cry
hey negrita

are average at best, although sound quality is clearer than previous albums.

melody
hot stuff
cherry o baby

are disappointing.

the albums not really my cup of tea but i can see how others like it.

Hot Stuff, Hand of Fate, Hey Negrita, Crazy Mama - these four songs would have made one HELL of an EP!

The other four songs, Memory Motel is nice, Melody is novel, Fool to Cry puts me to sleep and Cherry Oh Baby is the worst attempt at reggae by a white rock band I've ever heard.

It is an excelent album although not at the big 4 or Aftermath level. IMO Onlya couple of so and so songs:Fool to cry and Melody. It was a watershed period as they were auditioning for a new guitarist. It has a session feel.

I'd give it about a C+, a bit under ABB, about the same at Bridges to Babylon on a ratings scale.

Yeah, it's a great album - i love it. Funnily - there never seems to be any threads about early Brian Jones era albums like Englands Newest Hitmakers or Out OF Our Heads, or December's Children ...these 70's classics seem to pop up in threads every now and then.

@jamesfdouglas - you summed up my feelings on the songs. +1

The frustrating thing for me is that the record SOUNDS great. If Steel Wheels was mixed like Black & Blue, it would have been stellar! The songs are what matters... Melody and Cherry O Baby are both lousy songs/versions.

I remember listening to this at age 18 and really WANTING to get into it and never could. When looking through my collection, if I see Black and Blue, I almost always put Goats Head Soup on for some reason.

I like Memory Motel the best.

don't like Melody.

or Cherry Oh Baby..

Hey Negrita is a silly song but a great guitar groove.

Hand Of Fate is a classic somewhat underrated Stones song.

Fool To Cry could have been left off and nobody would care, although its on a lot of jukeboxes..

heard Hot Stuff on the radio the other day, not bad..

never been crazy about Crazy Mama..

Love it all...a great record and as many of you have asserted, the production/mix is perfect and they never really got back to this standard, although Some Girls came close. It captures the Stones sound and the boys are playing really well. The various guitarists who were being 'auditioned' also do a great job. Hey Negrita is just the funkiest and raunchiest Stones song thanks to Ron's brilliant riff. I'm off to give this a spin, it;s been too long!

It's an album that still devides waters after all these years.
First and foremost it's from a time when the band were still taking chances and not playing it safe. That alone makes the album worthwhile. It may not be the best album ever, but it's an interesting listen from start to finish, no matter how 'bad' some songs may be. Production-wise, it may be the best recorded album they have ever made.

Cherry oh Baby, Hey Negrita, Fool to Cry, Melody, and Crazy MaMa do not meet the standards that Stones' fans have come to expect. In some cases, these songs can be unnerving. However, the remainder of the album is outstanding.

really good lp...disappointed when it first came out...but it's aged well....."great" would be used to describe Sticky Fingers, Let it Bleed, Ya-Yas, Beggar's Banquet but not Black and Blue

Those are the ones I like, saw them in '62 in London while on furlough, stationed in Frankfurt. I always liked them more when they'd sing Sam Cooke, Paul Anka or Buddy Holly but some of their own songs are good too. "Dust my broom" is still one of my faves by them, don't know the last time they did that in concert.
