OMG! Ian Rankin (major Stones fan) tweeted earlier today that he was on his way to London and it was all very hush hush...

Well, I don't see any autopen in that picture. I sure hope my name's on one of those.

You could buy it at another Waterstones in Central London with the discount, then go to the Piccadilly store receipt in hand.... Gower Street, High Holborn, Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square are close by to the Piccadilly branch.

Here's to much luck in getting in and meeting the man.
Whatever the case, have fun in line, keep warm, yes?

Brrr. It's 4am, cold and dark in the Chiltern Hills, Hertfordshire, and I've just woken up. Off to drive to London now 40 miles away and got to hope that a bus will get me into town from the suburbs. And 60 people at 1.45am??? Eeek.

just in from our paulywaul:
"In the queue outside Waterstones. Joined it at 5:10 AM. There are Waterstones staff issuing ticket numbers,
I'm number 95. It's all very orderly. When the store opens at 9:00 they will escort people in (in 10s)
to buy a signed copy and get a wristband. The first 450 are guaranteed a signed copy.
If you want to meet Keith, you'll have to form another queue - he arrives at 5:00 PM.
He might then sign a further 20 to 100 books, no guarantees given"

my commentary: seems a bit odd way to arrange it, but ... i've got the incense lit for all our friends in the queue

Joined the queue at 5.10. There are Waterstones staff issuing ticket numbers, I am No 95. When the store opens, they will escort people inside in groups of ten where you will have an opportunity to buy a signed copy and get a wristband. The first 450 are GUARANTEED this. If you further want to "meet" Keith and maybe get another signature or whatever, you can join a further queue that will invariably form and hang out till 5.00 pm. That's when he arrives. There's no guarantees as to how long he'll stay or how many books he'll sign, the Waterstones staff advise it could be as few as 20, or as many as 100. The queue that will form for an opportunity to meet the man himself will NOT be numbered, it'll be a first come first serve job. THAT'S IT FOLKS.

so ... [scratching head] ... does one have to have a wristband to be in that Meet Keith Queue, and are people already in it?
Polish 1980s-queue-organizing expertise would come in handy here :E

The present queue is for a wristband and an opportunity to buy a book (unsigned). Then, anyone with a wristband can EITHER re-queue or go away and come back later, but only APPROX the first 150 in the re-queue are likely to get to meet the man. Anyone who does not will then have an opportunity to exchange their unsigned book for a pre-signed one, we are told he signed them last night.

Hey Pauly, sounds like when 9.00 comes around you should go straight to the 'meet Keef' queue to stand a chance of seeing him.

ahh so - thanks for clarifying! i think i get it now: the current queue gets you a chance to get in the next queue,
and meanwhile you get a book that Keith might sign later for some folks; if not you can trade it for a pre-signed one.
is that right? and will that crucial Meet Keith Queue be allowed to do their waiting inside the shop?
in any case i trust people will be cool about taking turns having breaks and so on, and that the crush won't be too fierce at 5PM!

Yep, you got it. Don't know where the "meet Keith" queue will start, whether inside the store or back out on the street, guess we'll find out soon enough. It's only ....... but I defintely DO like it.

Update from the queue, my wristband is 89, Beast's is 90. Rumour has it that his personal appearance will probably involve sufficient time for approx the first 100 to get their copies signed by him. But if you miss out, then it's just a straightforward exchange of the book you've just bought for a pre-signed one. So fingers crossed for later in the day ....

Wristbands changed in colour from gold to black at number 150, that's probably the limit they've put on the number of folk who will get to "meet Keith".

Good luck Pauly and Beast. But it seems like a bit of a fustercluck situation to go through. As much as I love the Rolling Stones I really don't think going through all that just to meet Keith Richards is worth it. But good luck to all those who try.
