I found the stadium sound to be immaculate on both shows I caught that tour. In fact, the stadiums have never sounded as good since. 2000 Light Years was a complete mind-blower. Who would think they would pull something like that out of the bag? Agree they sounded rehearsed and tight. I felt like they had something to prove having been gone so long. 8 years (in the States). Hell the

"I doubt any of them eat fast food or drink soda...a good start.." But in the liner notes to "Sleepless," Peter Wolf describes the arrival of Vodka, ice, and several cases of Orange Soda a couple hours before Keith arrives. Great album, btw.

Gazza has a good point, they do country straight sometimes -- when they choose to. I think it came out in the summer, I believe I remember hearing it for the first time on a beach. The entire record has a light, breezy summer time feel to me -- (good production, though I don't know jack about that stuff). Anyway, r n r is music for dancing. How many times have you been on a dance flo

The falsetto combined with "shining armor" is the Stones doing the same thing they do when they do country -- irony. Far Away Eyes' "I ran 20 red lights in his honor" is the country equivalent of the "knight in shining armor." And both of them totally work. They wouldn't be so over the top without those respective touches.

I'm going outside of the Stones for Gram Parsons' "In My Hour of Darkness" -- that song is for the people left behind. Once I'm gone, I'll be in heaven jamming to the Stones nightly.

My wife refers to me as a "serial monogamist." I'll go bonkers for an artist or band for several months, but I always come back to the Stones. And the only bootleg insanity I've gone through have been Dylan and Stones. Objects of my serial monogamy have included: Dylan Prince (if you've never seen him live, then you won't get it) Johnny Cash Miles Davis (I t

Great thread. I find it hard to track down new music these days; I count on friends whose taste I trust. so here are a few I discovered through others: Old 97s -- "Too Far to Care". This band smokes live, and the singer is a great lyricist. Mike Ireland and Holler -- A virtual unknown in pure country (i.e. not glossy Nashville) -- check out "Learning How to Live" or &

I was just listening to this gem from '94. Great set list, complete with acoustic set -- remember those? Ronnie just played some tasty licks on Sparks Will Fly and was generally pretty high in the mix, particularly the songs from Voodoo Lounge. I realized, besides Stripped Companion, I don't have any other boots from that tour. Who has got a recommendation for other good boots for

To get back to the original point of the thread, that "Undercover" the song was the last attempt at something "new and distinctive," I offer a different context. The notion of different sounding singles -- i.e. not classic sounding, had begun with "Angie" in 73. Look at these singles, forgive me if I'm off on any: Angie It's Only Rock n Roll Hot St

It's amazing how that song just smokes from start to finish. Mick hardly running at all, and Keith and Ron standing still just PLAYING. Wow.

I really like this record. Bought it when it came out. It's got a REALLY 70s sound; it's like that extra Stones record you wish they'd made between Goats Head and Black and Blue. I love "Oh, Virginia."

IORR is by far the worst. Lacks punch, sounds like the whole band is underwater. Black and Blue is ridiculously good. How do things sound so different?

I'm going with "decade" to mean the last 10 years. The 2nd night of the No Security Tour in Washington, DC. I had gone with my brother the first night and took a dubious friend the second night. They just absolutely smoked! It was the first (and only) time I saw them on back-to-back nights. I was blown away by how much better one night was than the other.

I agree with ryanpow on this. I finally saw the film last night, and seeing it makes all the difference. Jack White was smiling from ear to ear because he was playing onstage with his heroes. When you see AND hear him, it makes total sense. I expected to be totally underwhelmed by the film, and yet, I was totally bopping. Even Keith's Sympathy solo, which sounds beyond horrible on the CD

I'm only through All Down the Line so far, but I liked the solo in Shattered with the chunky chords, and Ronnie plays wicked slide in All Down the Line. I was throughly prepared to be underwhelmed by this record, but this thing kicks butt. As others have mentioned, it's nice to have something official that basically recreates an entire show start to finish--plus a few bonus tracks o

I made a mixed tape (yes cassette) in college (late 80s) called "Struggle." Musical selections are obviously dated. But this thread and the God thread inspired me to bust it out. Can't play it, but I can look at it. Side One: God Songs Dear God -- XTC God Knows I'm Good -- Bowie In God's Country -- U2 God - John Lennon God Part II -- U2 God Only Knows -- Bowie

Justin Hit the nail on the head! I've lurked at this site for years and finally had to register to thank him for putting words to Keith's playing. I couldn't figure out how to describe that "long lazy bend," but it depresses the heck out of me every time he plays it. I listened to the sampler on my couch last night and said, "I want so badly to like this, but
