"Any Time At All" from the Beatles "Something New" -- and album that doesn't exist now that they have replaced the catalog with only the Brit versions. I think it's that song that shaped my hopelessly optimistic view of life.

Anybody heard of this Atlanta band? I had to buy their debut disc after hearing it yesterday at my local record store. Think Modern Lovers, dBs, and Soft Boys. I haven't heard a record that just grabbed me by the throat like this in some time. Any fans out there?

Good Call, CC. Lou Reed can certainly compete. At his lyrical best, like "New York." Similar to Dylan in that he's made some absolutely amazing records and some very bad ones, "Mistrial" anybody?

Is there any doubt when you look at lyrics like those that Bob is an absolute genius? Who else can even begin to rival lyrics like those? Please offer some competitors.

Pushed to choose, GHS blows away IORR for sheer feel and soul. That album captures a vibe or a moment in time, much like the way Exile, and Sticky seem to as well. Part of it is the production; I've never liked the sound of IORR. Even if the songs on GHS feel unfinished, like "Hide Your Love," there's nothing on there that I would skip. Whereas I find myself jumping ov

Two weeks ago, after fighting with the wife, I went downstairs, threw on Hampton '81, and it provided that cathartic jolt I needed. The Stones records are so ingrained in me that they take no effort to listen to, rather the songs inhabit by body, and I them. It's like being set free. The music brings me back to an even keel, it's like having a reset button. After hitting

While in most cases I can recite the track order from memory -- certainly up until Steel Wheels. More to the point for me is that when a song ends I naturally go into the first few notes of the next one -- whether I can name the song or not.

I love Winter, so it's the one I'll play every time, BUT, when I saw Prince on the Purple Rain tour, he absolutely BLEW ME AWAY when he played guitar. Purple Rain was a 25 minute guitar jam of an encore. And I HATED Prince before seeing that show; I only went because my girlfriend wanted to go. I cut school to buy the tickets. To use an overused term, he is a musical genius -- and

Blasting Hampton '81 right now. Seems to me this is the last time Ronnie got to play LOUD and solo like a crazy man -- his playing on Black Limo and Neighbors is just ripping. Ever since '89 you have to struggle to hear Ronnie except on a few showcase tunes like "CYHMK," "Don't Stop," or "If you Can't Rock Me" I have to agree with the Wyman l

Lou Reed as a solo artist-- a lot like Dylan and Neil Young. Some magnificent albums, true gems, plus some absolutely atrocious ones. Down eras, comebacks, the whole journey. To me any artist's true crime is to be boring. Lou succeeded at that several times, as did the other two. Personal faves: Transformer Rock and Roll Animal The Blue Mask New Sensations New York GodAwful:

Wow, That's a lot better than I thought it would be. Was Party Doll that country on the album? I dig the harmonica break at the end too. Is that on the original?

I'm with the naysayers here. When it came out I couldn't stand the thing. I've tried numerous times over the years and found myself unable to get through an entire song. I always thought it was not only one of the worst albums ever but a strong candidate for the ugliest album art in rock history. I have been a hardcore Stones fan since I was 10 (31 years ago, btw), and I was

741. Re: Slave
We all have our favorites, Skipstone, and yes, it's better than both of those late era platters for sure. But back to the original thread. Yes, the guitar sound is crunchy even though the whole disc sounds polished -- though not overly so, IMO.

10 songs to be a classic? While I enjoy Black and Blue -- perhaps their best sounding recording -- it's no classic. I think the best thing that happened with the advent of mp3s was the return to SHORTER albums. I love that the new albums clock in under 40 minutes. When people felt they had to fill 80 minutes, things took a nosedive.

And the Dylan, for example, I gladly bought the two disc version, and then burned the third from a reviewer friend who got an advance of the whole she-bang, albeit without the book, which I would have read once anyway. I'll chime in for U2 at $9.99, thank you very much.

Decade is the first hits collection; definitely start there. Early 70s acoustic era -- After the Gold Rush Late 70s Electric -- Rust Never Sleeps and Live Rust (half acoustic, half electric) 80s Geffen Era -- Lucky 13 (Greatest Hits of Geffen) or Trans but it's an acquired taste 1990s the Rebirth -- Ragged Glory, then Weld (live) 1995 -- Mirror Ball (Neil w/Pearl Jam as his band) Every

That is unquestionably my favorite moment of that song. I read somewhere that he had only done a few beginning takes of the song when he got a phone call in the studio from Bianca and left without ever doing the "final" take. But I think it's that unpolished feel that makes it extra special.

Reading the lyrics makes it a lot more interesting. Hated the sound of the thing, though. It's one of those songs that reads better than it plays. Can't say that about a lot of songs.
