Los Lobos, Paul Westerberg and Pavement have come close but could not overtake my love for the Stones.

I must admit that Dylan and Lucinda Williams have passed them by too for me definately already some 5 yrs ago.
Black Crows closing in because of their great instant live recordings. Same for Clapton because of his great live gigs.
AC/DC and Motorhead now and than but not really structurally.
Joy Division is a special case. Great recordings, live too but too few to really compare.

I enjoy other artists that I think are brilliant and important: muddy, marley,dylan,the beatles,chuck berry, zeppelin, miles davis

..and some others that I think are brilliant but you can debate whether they're important: allman bros,grateful dead, steve earle, lucinda, los lobos...

None of those guys (or the others I forgot to mention) affect me like the Stones...

Dylan, Grateful Dead, Neil Young & Bruce Springsteen at various times off & On. These are my top 5. But Overall I keep going back to the Stones as top dog honors. MEZ

Stones are up there but there's plenty of other great stuff....

My wife refers to me as a "serial monogamist." I'll go bonkers for an artist or band for several months, but I always come back to the Stones. And the only bootleg insanity I've gone through have been Dylan and Stones.

Objects of my serial monogamy have included:
Dylan
Prince (if you've never seen him live, then you won't get it)
Johnny Cash
Miles Davis (I thought for about 4 months that I might never listen to anything but jazz -- that wore off though).

Back in 1962 I heard this new band called "The Rolling Stones" now they gave them a run for the money!

Stones lost it on their ownover the years, looking back maybe they are in the top 10 if you want to be nice, but not a band I used to love.

I listen to all kinds of music...much of which I've been introduced to by the Stones interperating it in their authentic yet unique style.
It might be interesting to work out what percentage of my listening time is spent listening to the Stones. It would probably be quite high...but I don't miss out on other stuff due to some blind allegiance. Other bands often fill narrow gaps in my musical needs... but Stones fulfill a big part of them.

The Cult has come the closest for me. When they focus on what I feel they do best, they are very hard to beat!

Oh, yes lot's of times. Bands like Led Zeppelin, The Who, Radiohead, Pink Floyd,R.E.M.,U2, Tindersticks. Even The Beatles.

But I always come back to my first love: The Rolling Stones!

I love lots of music of all styles, but STONES are No. 1 always.

In the years 1972 - 1974, when i was 11-13, my favorite band had been Slade. You know, "glam rock" years...
Since then, the Stones is by far my #1 favorite band. Thanks to their music and to their live performances.

With me it's the other way around. The Who are my lifelong obsession (though as with many Who fans, it's been sort of a love/hate relationship). The Stones briefly surpassed them as my favourite band in the late 70s.

I can't help but laugh that several of you mentioned Stones coverbands (aka tribute bands) in a thread about bands that potentially passed the Stones as your favorite band. A tribute band could SURPASS the Stones as your favorite band? Sorry, slightly funny...

For me there's the Stones and then there's everyone else. Black Mountain could very well surpass the Rolling Stones, but they're only on their second (and best) album. They're youngsters though, so who knows what will go down. Radiohead is pretty far up there too...

etc., I have always been listening too their records any many other too.

But Stones lifestyle, behaviour, darkness, sex, blues and rock in the music has never been surpassed by other bands music - so Stones is THE BEST.

Tonight I was Just listening to Low down, Wont take long, Midnight rambler etc. - no other band has this darksness, rawness, sexulality in their music and that's what attracts me.( Not this boy band Beatles thing)
