Rough Justice - GREAT
Let Me Down Slow - GREAT
It Won't Take Long - GREAT
Rain Fall Down - OK
Streets Of Love - HORRIBLE
Back Of My Hand - GOOD
She Saw Me Coming - OK
Biggest Mistake - OK
This Place Is Empty - OK
Oh No, Not You Again - FILLER (but live @ Juilliard music school sounded really great!)
Dangerous Beauty - FILLER,
Laugh, I Nearly Died - GREAT
Sweet Neo Con - NOT SO GOOD
Look What The Cat Dragged In - USELESS
Driving Too Fast - GOOD
Infamy - FILLER

Replace "Streets Of Love" with "Under The Radar", take away "Oh No Not You Again" and "Dangerous Beauty" and put "We Don't Wanna Go Home" instead, Get rid of "Sweet neoCon", "Look What The Cat Dragged In" and "Infamy", put "Laugh I Nearly Died" as the closer and there you have a great album!

The production also could have been better. Anita Pllenberg stated that she rough mixes she had the chance to hear sounded much better.

Rough Justice ==> GOOD, but dare-I-say, a bit "SBN" (Stones-by-numbers)
Let Me Down Slow ==> OKAY, but idem as above
It Won't Take Long ==> idem
Rain Fall Down ==> GOOD
Streets Of Love ==> NOT MY CUP OF TEA, but not bad (Out of Tears II)
Back Of My Hand ==> OK, BUT TOO OBVIOUS
She Saw Me Coming ==> NICE TRY, but NO
Biggest Mistake ==> UNCONVINCING, the melody is nice, but it lacks conviction
This Place Is Empty ==> As much as I normally like Keith's songs, this is a bit "Keith-by-numbers"
Oh No, Not You Again ==> OK, FUNNY
Dangerous Beauty ==> NICE TRY, but NO
Laugh, I Nearly Died ==> GOOD, REALLY GOOD SONG (maybe the best of the album)
Sweet Neo Con ==> ... (really, what can I say...?, it belongs in the class of "Gomper", "See What Happens" and "Back To Zero" ).
Look What The Cat Dragged In ==> NICE TRY, but NO
Driving Too Fast ==> FILLER,
Infamy ==> NICE TRY, but NO

All in all: not a very good album. Maybe they should have... I don't know what they should have. Some songs are nice tries but don't convince. Others are too obvious without adding anything special. Keith's songs are clearly inferior to the songs on Crosseyed Heart.

The tracks I still enjoy:

Rough Justice
Let Me Down Slow
Back Of My Hand
She Saw Me Coming
Biggest Mistake
This Place Is Empty
Dangerous Beauty

The rest I grew tired of, or they were pretty bad to begin with. I liked Laugh, I Nearly Died a while. Now I can't listen to it (apart from the big Mick-choir, that's cool).

Looking back at the marks I gave, I maybe should give the "Nice Try, but no" ones another try...

Why does everyone hate so much on Streets Of Love? I think it's a fantastic song and they have done great versions of it live, in Rome for example.

Best STUDIO album since Bridges to Babylon...

really, it's a great album. Don't like the production that much, but is still pretty good sounding rock and roll album. Nice ballads, blues, nice lyrics, and the clasic rock songs.

I know I belong to the minority group, but I think that ABB is a great album, which ranks among the top five of the band. It seems to me a little bit like a piece of heavy Chamber Music, you know, simple music with a hue of the genius of the young band in the beginning of the sixties. Okay, there are two flops (Streets of Love, Sweet Neo Con) but the brilliant Under the Radar and We Don't Wanna Go Home compensate for those both tracks more than enough. Brilliant, too, Back of My Hand, maybe a hint for the next (I hope Blues-focussed) album. Interestingly the last three albums are above the average with the highlight ABB - in fact no equivalent to the live Vegas acts of the last twenty six years.

It's a bit cheesy on the album, I think that's what hard to stomach for some fans.

I have also seen great live versions of SOL, and know how good it can be.

Rough Justice --- great
Let Me Down Slow --- subpar
It Won't Take Long --- very enjoyable
Rain Fall Down --- great
Streets Of Love --- HORRIBLE
Back Of My Hand --- good
She Saw Me Coming --- rather plain
Biggest Mistake --- subpar
This Place Is Empty --- great
Oh No, Not You Again --- great
Dangerous Beauty --- enjoyable
Laugh, I Nearly Died --- good
Sweet Neo Con --- supbar
Look What The Cat Dragged In --- great
Driving Too Fast --- great
Infamy --- HORRIBLE

Under The Radar --- very good
Don´t Wanna Go Home --- HORRIBLE

Their best post-Dirty-Work-album, although it lacks real outstanding gems. Even the great ones are just great but not outstanding. A very solid, mostly straight forward rocking album with stripped down arrangements. Let Me Down Slow and Biggest Mistake are rather tame & lame and spoil the rocking approach of the album. Streets Of Love is "awful bad", Laugh I Nearly Die could be better if Mick´s singing wasnt that affected and almost simpering. Once again an album that´s a bit too long, a shorter version would be more pleasing.

So this is my version of the album, which I enjoy very much:

Rough Justice
It Wont Take Long
Dangerous Beauty
Rain Fall Down
Back Of My Hand
Under The Radar
This Place Is Empty
Oh No Not You Again
Laugh I Nearly Died
Look What The Cat Dragged In
Driving Too Fast

Agree completely on the Juilliard Press Conference version of Oh No, Not You Again". If they had released the studio version with that arrangement it would have been a bigger commercial success.

Look what the cat dragged in is a good song, and the solo by ronnie is great as well. I don't understand the hate for it.

Rough Justice - nice rocker, but predictable
Let Me Down Slow - I really like it, it should've been 1st single
It Won't Take Long - nice, but not great
Rain Fall Down - great
Streets Of Love - dissapointing on the album, but great live
Back Of My Hand - nice, but again too predictable
She Saw Me Coming - OK
Biggest Mistake - good
This Place Is Empty - really touching Keith ballad
Oh No, Not You Again - cool
Dangerous Beauty - filler
Laugh, I Nearly Died - fantastic, best on the album
Sweet Neo Con - should've been erased as soon as they recored it. So bad that's almost funny
Look What The Cat Dragged In - kinda nice but filler
Driving Too Fast - boring
Infamy - ok

Rough Justice - Nice. Good run of the mill rocker.
Let Me Down Slow - Love this tune. Although it's nothing like Waiting On A Friend it fits that vibe in a way.
It Won't Take Long - Awesome.
Rain Fall Down - On the fence about this one. Musically it's interesting, lyrically... some stupid lyrics. "She cooked me up some eggs Then she made some tea Kissed me on the cheek And I turned on her TV"? Really? She cooked me up some EGGS.
Streets Of Love - Absolute CRAP. Awful awful bad. Just horrendous. Another sap of garbage in the bag of stupid Stones songs.
Back Of My Hand - Nice. But.... I dunno. It borders on filler for some reason.
She Saw Me Coming - Love this tune. It's funny as well. It's got some humour in it. Nice searing grinding riff.
Biggest Mistake - Love this tune.
This Place Is Empty - Great tune.
Oh No, Not You Again - Come on. Really? Borrrrrring. It's stupid. FILLER.
Dangerous Beauty - Awesome.
Laugh, I Nearly Died - Awesome. This from the same dude who sang Streets Of Shit? Stupefying.
Sweet Neo Con - WTF? Awful.
Look What The Cat Dragged In - Nice but nothing... borderline filler. A bit off. Would've made a great B-side.
Driving Too Fast - Same thing, nice tune but considering the length of the LP... but it's a bit off as well. Another great B-side.
Infamy - Funny tune. Nothing special about it but it's cool.

How A BIGGER BANG should've been released:

Rough Justice
Let Me Down Slow
It Won't Take Long
Back Of My Hand
She Saw Me Coming
Biggest Mistake
This Place Is Empty
Dangerous Beauty
Laugh, I Nearly Died
Infamy

Is it a good album? I like it better than STEEL WHEELS, VOODOO LOUNGE and DIRTY WORK (of course, any Stones album is better than DIRTY WORK) for sure. I listened to it a lot when it came out. As much as I like the songs that doesn't necessarily mean it's a great album. If it was shorter it would almost automatically be better. Is it a good album? Probably. If it was strictly yes or no I'd say yes. Good in the way IT'S ONLY ROCK'N'ROLL is good? Probably. Is it better than IORR or BLACK AND BLUE? Eh, probably not. At least BAB.

I was floored by their choice of singles for it though. And was even more floored that they basically ignored it on the tour named after the LP. I don't understand the point of working on 300 songs to put on an album and then playing only 2 of them on the tour. What's the point in making the album then unless it's just for the sake of making and releasing an album? They should've named the tour something else, like LICKS 2 or GIVE US YOUR MONEY.

Biggest Mistake - OK
This Place Is Empty - USELESS
Oh No, Not You Again - FILLER
Dangerous Beauty - HORRENDOUS
Laugh, I Nearly Died - GREAT
Sweet Neo Con - GODDES IN THE DOORWAY'S OUTTAKE...AWFUL.

The anticipation for this release was enormous, but the results were a burst of the bubble...almost a total letdown.

Rough Justice
Let Me Down Slow
It Won't Take Long

Rain Fall Down - not bad, my wife really likes it
Streets Of Love
Back Of My Hand - nice effort, inferior blues by numbers
She Saw Me Coming
Biggest Mistake - somewhat tolerable, but Micks vocals suck.
This Place Is Empty - the one and only highlight that I still listen to,
Oh No, Not You Again
Dangerous Beauty

Laugh, I Nearly Died - could have been better, lame lyrics and bad Mick's vocals.
Sweet Neo Con
Look What The Cat Dragged In
Driving Too Fast

Infamy - ehhh...monotonous, might have been better as a slower solo acoustic tune.
That bad effect on the guitar sounds like a Jews Harp.

I first heard this album in my favorite bar in Tokyo...on the very day it was released as it happened. I knew a new Stones album would soon be on sale but after the mediocrity of the 90s albums I wasn't exactly 'counting the days.' So there I was drinking a 'tarantula' when I hear a pretty cool intro to a song I'd never heard before ('Rough Justice' of course). I distinctly remember thinking it sounded very Stonesy. And then that old familiar voice...oh no not him again.

Anyways, still love the intro and the memory. The rest of the album is, unbelievably, an even bigger let-down than the 90s rubbish.

some songs on it are really not my favourite songs. SOL, Sweet Neo Con and both Keith songs are very weak songs IMO. I don't like how the album sounds, too compressed, no layers (Crosseyed Heart has more layers, and warmth to it I think).

But I do like the basic approach of the album, just the core band, not to much extra musicians. And that gave us some fine songs like Rough Justice, Laugh I Nearly Died, Back of my Hand, Biggest mistake, Let me down slow.

The difference between good songs and weak songs is very big on this album I think. Maybe I should give it another spin, for another point of view

Underrated, really liked it at first but now skip half the tracks.
It won't take long, Let me down slow, Laugh, Biggest Mistake, She Saw me coming all as good as anything else around at the time.
Another poor cover though.

Because it's so bad. As much as I hate the cop-out description of 'filler' and 'stones-by-numbers', I'll use another one ... 'contrived'. I really hate that criticism as well (as how could anyone really know that a song was contrived?) but if I were ever going to accuse a song of being contrived, this one would be it.

They did this same type of ballad one too many times, and for me at least, it is too old. It's just sappy from the beginning and just gets worse.

Re: ALBUM TALK: A Bigger Bang

I love the album. There are songs I don't like at all, but there are enough great ones for me to overcome that.

I'll start w/ the great:
- Rough Justice
- Let Me Down Slow
- It Won't Take Long
- Back Of My Hand
- She Saw Me Coming
- This Place Is Empty
- Laugh, I Nearly Died
- Infamy

It doesn't get much better than Rough Justice for ripping guitar licks. I almost rank it up there w/ All Down The Line. It Won't Take Long is a great rocker and mick's vocals are top notch. She Saw Me Coming is one of those songs that just kicks ass, not much more to say on that. Both Keith songs are fantastic, especially Infamy. The groove is amazing and Keith, as always, belts out some great vocals here. One of his best!

Very good:
- Oh No, Not You Again
- Biggest Mistake

Love both, just not as much as the 'great' ones.

Averate:
- Rain Fall Down
- Sweet Neo Con
- Dangerous Beauty

I would have been okay w/ these songs being left off the album. They are okay, it's just that they don't move me anymore. Sweet Neo Con, for its bad lyrics, is actually a good song musically.

Bad:
- Streets Of Love
- Look What The Cat Dragged In
- Driving Too Fast

No need to ever listen to Streets again. The others, I may be ranking lower than they should be, but the album is long and they don't move me either, so I would prefer they not be included.

Don't feel the need to really say much about:
- Under The Radar
- We Don't Wanna Go Home

as they aren't on the album and aren't that great anyway. Both slightly above average, and even if the bad songs were removed, I'd probably not replace them w/ these either.
