If we can't have the Stones I'd still want to see Mick perform it. He'd blow the place apart.

I think, they are managing Expectations of people to see them:

In 2005 they could have played Live Aid but preferred to skip it In ordem to raise Expectations for the forthcoming Tour.

My opinion is that they will do the same this year.

Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Elton John to Play Olympics Closing Ceremony?
9 August 2012

New details are emerging about this Sunday’s closing ceremony for the 2012 London Olympics, and U.K. newspaper The Telegraph reports that the extravaganza may include some of the biggest stars in the history of British rock.

While The Who and George Michael have been confirmed for the event, and the participation of The Kinks‘ Ray Davies and Pink Floyd‘s Nick Mason is strongly rumored, The Telegraph has unveiled a speculative lineup that also includes The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Elton John, members of Queen and former Jam frontman Paul Weller.

While the paper stresses that it’s “just guessing” about the entertainment bill it published, it does note that Olympic Closing Ceremony music director David Arnold has called the list “scarily accurate.”

The ceremony will be titled “A Symphony of British Music” and will be two-and-a-half hours long. Arnold describes the event as “a celebration of Britishness in terms of the arts: design, fashion, fine art, poetry and play writing all sitting fairly and squarely on popular music.”

Arnold says that the extravaganza will be “more theatrical than a concert,” because the action will take place throughout the entire Olympic stadium. Adds Arnold, “It’s a big ‘arms around the world’ event, where we are going to be asking people to get involved. Hopefully, it will be a big party.”

The coverage of Sunday’s Olympic Closing Ceremony begins at 7 p.m. ET on NBC.

Nothing more than supposition in the article

I've personally enjoyed the Olympics immensely but one thing I'll be glad to see when its over is the end of these threads based on nothing more than lazy journalists throwing a list of British musical acts into a hat and pulling out a few random names so that they can waste newspaper space and get a few internet hits with nothing more than speculative nonsense.

They are probably all in London - maybe they will then join onstage for a singlong song, not act like Rolling Stones, but together with 50-100 other English musicians. They will sit in the VIP place anyway.

It won't happen unless they mime the backing.

The Spice Girls will mime for sure.

God.. think of all those egos fighting for closing spot.

The mind boggles.

smiling bouncing smiley for the last line!

Not so sure about the Spice Girls miming - they haven't done so in the past. I do agree that the Stones would need Keith's part mimed though, or someone playing under the stage. Seriously, I just hope they never take to the stage again.

I read somewhere but may be wrong that for all the musical acts for logistical reasons (so many changeovers, I presume) that the backing tracks will all be pre-recorded with only the vocals being live.

I don't know if this is true but if so then that could be the door for the Stones to perform and not worry about Keith!

Wouldn't he still have had to play on the recording?

No, because it's a "pre-recording" as opposed to a plain ol' recording.

They don't have bike racing in the Olympics? Keith was so good in that French race.
