Keith Singing Gimme Shelter???
Posted by: ChrisO ()

Now, I've heard Keith doing Gimme Shelter with the Winos but I found a version of the exact Stones version "Identical Music" but instead of Mick singing, its Keith.

Did they dub in his voice at the studio when they originaly recorded it or is this just someones doin on the internet???

Thanks!

These does exist a Keith vocal on it from back in the day, just as there exists a version of You Got the Silver with Mick singing lead.

I know this has been discussed at length here before but that still sounds like Mick to me...

Personally, I hear Mick and Keith on this version.

Mick's vocal on the released version is the cherry on the cake.

Keith doesn't have the timbre, gravitas or the menace to do this.

Still it's not bad.

Yeah, you're definitely Chuck Leavell, Long John Stoner.

Keith sounds suprisingly Mickish on this recording, but I'd say it's Keith without a doubt. It's not so much the actual voice, but his phrasing and style. Mick would be barking more than that, and sing with his typical drawn-out Jagger soul feel.

This is not anything new but I have to ask the experts, are we 100% sure this is not a fake? If its not Keith it could be Miller. Or Keiths backup vocal and the only parts used are the ones in the chorus.

There has been a fair bit of debate as to whether this is Keith's or Mick's voice.

The extended version (not remix) is from one of those Rock Guitar things that doesn't fade out but goes through to Keith's final fat note on the guitar. The tracks were available fairly seperately, one guitar & piano were on one channel, drums on another & vocals on another so you could remove the vocals & just have a legitimate, stereo backing track. I remember posting these waaaay back.

The Mick version of You Got The Silver is a true Stones artifact. I'm pretty sure this is not. It sounds to me like a modern-day internet concoction wherein some Guitar Hero Game Boy has removed Mick's vocal and dubbed in his own voice, double-tracked and distorted, to try to give it a vintage, lost-artifact kind of sound. You don't seriously believe that Mick would have turned to Keith in 1969 and said, "Why don't you give this one a try and we'll see how it sounds", do you? Mick knew this was one of the best songs ever written. He wasn't gonna let anyone else sing it.

Question: Does anyone have a 40-year-old bootleg LP with this track on it? Or did it only "come to light" sometime after the appearance of the "Guitar Hero" game?

I have that version on this bootleg from '93:
rolling stones
the anniversary 30 years live on stage

no guitar hero game out at the time.

it's also on the Let it Bleed Sessions boot where You Got The Silver with Micks vocals can be found.

Still don't think it's Keith.

It makes sense that Keith would do a guide vocal by himself because he wrote the whole thing.

Could it be a mix of both Keith and Mick's voices?

Steve Jordan talked about liking this version better than the record, which is why Keith did it with The Winos in 93. Definitely Keith.

This track came from a batch of tapes provided by Jimmy Miller. He made tapes for friends when he lived in London, producing Primal Scream in the early 90's. Some tapes where sold through Sotheby's, and most of the Beggars/LIB and Exile outtakes available today come from Miller.

I guess that if you don't hear that Keith is singing GS here you must be deaf.
