Are these El Mocambo shows in circulation?? Love to get FLAC's of them, if possible. Happy New Year!!

PS-KP=Kitchen Police

Here's Dance Little Sister from the El Mocambo-bootleg:

Isn't it a shame they didn't play 5-6 good rehearsed shows like they had originally planned. That would have made for a lot of interesting stuff . .

I'm from Canada and have been to the El Mo on more than a few occasions over the years; the 'ol El Mo sure has had it's history of musical appearances, besides the Stones, bands/performers like;

Liz Phair
Billy Bragg
Tragically Hip
Ry Cooder
Police
Grover Washington Jr
Charles Mingus
Ramones
Roy Buchanan
Rush
Johnny Winter
Edgar Winter Group
Black Flag
John Mellencamp
Patti Smith
Elvis Costello
DEVO
Lou Reed
U2
Downchild Blues Band
Blue Rodeo
The Guess Who
Stevie Ray Vaughan (an official DVD exists of that one)
New York Dolls
Lucinda Williams
Cracker

..and countless countless others have played there. Just about any up and coming Toronto or Canadian band played there.

The place has quite a history. On Spadina and west of the Yonge street strip, It was first opened in the 1850's; slaves that escaped from American via the Underground Railroad hid there.

From the 1940's to 1960 it was a restaurant. It was one of the first places in Toronto given a provincial liquor license; previous to that Toronto city by laws prevented those. The 'Spanish Garden' was opened upstairs for ballroom dancing.

In the 1960's the El Mo was known as "Schuy's Tavern" after the then owner. Upstairs the ballroom in Spanish decor was renamed the Starlight Room and still used for ballroom dancing. Downstairs was cheap draught beer and a stripper bar. In this period the Toronto music scene was focused in Yorkville, with the coffee houses, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot etc., and on Yonge street, where rock bars featured the likes of Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks for example; who played at Yonge street rock bars like the Zanzibar, which shortly thereafter became a stripper bar and to this day remains a lap dance palace. The Yonge St. scene and Yorkville scenes were completely different, although only a couple of subway stops apart.

On Yonge there was the Mynah Birds (Neil Young's band with Rick James of 'Super Freak fame; the band was recording at Motown in 1965 in Detroit when cops raided the place and arrested James, who was from Buffalo NY for draft dodging), the Sparrows (who became Steppenwolf), and even Zeppelin's first album gig in town in 1969 was at the 'Rockpile' on Yonge on August 18, the same weekend Woodstock was happening in New York state about 400 miles away.

The El Mo's new owners in the early 70's wanted to go after the nearby University of Toronto crowd and decided to book blues and rock acts, mainly because blues and rock audiences DRANK! 'Opening night' performers were 'Foot in Cold Water' (Make Me Do Anything You Want).

The El Mo remained a rock and blues mainstay during the disco phase and was famous for selling boatloads of beer. A true dive, the Stones selected it apparently because it reminded them of the holes they used to play in, in 1962. You know, uneven floors and that soaked-in beer smell.. bands were invited back to play at the El Mo (or not) literally dependent upon how much beer was sold.

April Wine opened both Stones El Mo shows; they might have released one as a live record; and I think Elvis Costello released a live show from there, too.

The Stones made $400 per gig, billed as 'The Cockroaches' which was the going Elmo rate. LOL. Back then the El Mo told you what you'd get for gigging there, not the other way around.

The El Mo became kind of passe in the 80's and 90's and some bands refused to play there citing it as a 'commercial trap.' Anyway, there were by now millions of other bars in Toronto to play at. (Rivoli, Lee's Palace, the 360, Hotel Isabella, Horseshoe etc) The Stones kicked off their 1997 world tour at the Horseshoe. The 'Shoe has for many years now basically become the El Mo of old, booking rock and blues acts pretty much exclusively. The El Mo closed in 2001, but was soon re-purchased, gutted and renovated. Currently the El Mo books a wide variety of musical acts, world music, jazz, reggae, hip hop etc and holds many functions raising funds for many charitable causes. Quite the spot indeed.

I totally agree. Brussels rocks but I've heard most of it for about 20 years now. On the stones website you can see in their photo gallery pictures of cow palace 1975 tapes. I would rather hear that than '75 la forum. There are a ton of '81 soundboards. Something besides hampton would be nice.

Actually we've never heard alot of what was released as the official Brussels Affair. Only 3 songs were taken from the afternoon Brussels show which is the one that we've been listening to for 30-some years. There was a handful of tracks from the evening show available in rough soundboard quality but nothing near the sound quality we get with the official release. There were several tracks that had never circulated as a bootleg in any form.

I'm not sure why people keep saying that they've had these recordings for years. If you actually listen to them, it's pretty obvious that they're different performances. Only "Brown Sugar", "Midnight Rambler", and "Street Fighting Man" are from the 1st Brussels show, which is the one that we've all got on bootleg.

Straight from the Tongue&Lips: The band are releasing another bootleg remixed by Bob Clearmountain soon. What year do you hope it's from?

Me hopes 1975. But 1970 or 1971 will do too. And any year from the 60's. And okay, that El Carillo from 1977, too.

"Straight from the Tongue&Lips: The band are releasing another bootleg remixed by Bob Clearmountain soon. What year do you hope it's from?"

That's great news! Looking forward to hear whatever it is, as long as it's nothing from after 1981. Myself, I can't get enough of Taylor-era stuff -- would love something like Essen '70, some unheard '71, the mid-tour '72 or Australia '73. A really good show from '75 would also be worth it, not to mention El Mocambo '77.
