I have to respond to redhotcarpet's take on Sticky Fingers and go off topic as he or she did. To each his own but CYHMK a boring riff ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND? One of the best riffs I've ever heard! Wild Horses is in my top ten.

It is far superior to B&B even though I love B&B!

i agree that is an unbelievable review of sticky fingers

I know it sounds stupid to claim that B&B was their biggest effort in the 70s but if you listen to the whole album, the production, the musicianship and the songs it's not a bad album at all. Too short but had they included Worried bout you, Slave, and maybe one real rocker ("Never stop"?) it would have been a classic.

And I gotta say, to me Sticky is not a great album, I never listen to it. Brown Sugar is a great song but I prefer the live versions of 1972 and the Altamont version. Or the birthday version. Sway is a great track but I've heard it and thats enough, it's just too much somehow. Wild horses is overrated and all too melodramatic. I hate it. There I said it.
Cant you hear me knocking is a stiff overrated rocker, the riff is just boring and it doesnt go anywhere.
You gotta move was a highlight in 1975/76 but the studio version is a joke, Mick does it tongue in cheek. Bitch is good, a solid track, but the production is lame. I got the blues is a pointless pastich. Sister Morphine too, doesnt go anywhere, I dont believe Mick when he sings it. Angie is much better. Dead flowers is a great country track but would have suited their best album ever; Let it Bleed. Moonlight Mile is very nice indeed and maybe the only "deep" song, a song where you feel the singer wants to express something.

Sorry but that's how I feel about Sticky, it's not a bad album, how could it be, but I prefer B&B. Yayas? Keith is great but it sounds a bit dated and I prefer the Jagger of 1972-1978. Exile is the ultimate album I guess but how often do you listen to it? B&B is not better than Exile but had it been a real LP with ten or twelve songs from that period and with that production it would have been a true classic. If you take Miss You from Some Girls you have a boring rock album with maybe two good songs.

I think you're right about Sticky Fingers. I must say that I've always considered Exile quite lame as well. There's just isn't many good songs on it. Ever heard Let it Bleed album? Mediocre at best. Beggars? Amateuristic. Ya-Ya's? Sounds like a bootleg.

Give me Tales from Topographic Oceans anytime.

Well if you are for freedom of speech then let me enjoy mine winking smiley. actually Im not joking, I think Cant you hear me knocking is good but not one of the great ones. Keith has come up with much better riffs, the minimalistic Hot Stuff, the perfect IYCRM, the solid Dance little sister. Many fans consider Sticky to be the best album but I don't. It's not bad but I never listen to it. Could be that Keith was missing, sort of. Beggars, Let is bleed and Exile have Keith co-piloting with Mick.

Its not a bad album, because it's a Stones album, but as such its not great and I dont care for it anymore.
That doesnt mean I havent played it I just don't listen to it anymore. It lacks something and I always felt it did. Maybe it's Keith? (please dont report me)

Black and Blue was the first Stones album I bought when I was old enough to be able to afford to buy an album. So the whole album is a soft spot for me but this tune is just excellent from start to finish.

In spanish negrita is used to refer a girl of black race. Colloquially and with respect. Literally "little black girl". (I am no an english speaker and as far as I know words like "black" or "negro" or similiar are extremely dangerous and it is better to never use them).

And then...every spanish speaking country has its own nuances...in Puerto Rico means just a nice bloke/girl, regardless the colour of his/her skin.

He's had his share of co-writing credits. Sometimes, to me anyway, it works, like with Hey Negrita, Dance, Everything's Turning To Gold ... and sometimes it doesn't, like I see he is credited on Fight, Dirty Work, Had It With You.

Ronnie Wood's greatest contribution to the Rolling Stones. The way I heard it, Woods came up with the slide riffs.

I like how some of the words are in Spanish. And it tells a universal story (poor man seeks sexual gratification at a discount rate and is repelled by haughty streetwalker).

The outtake is better than the version on Black and Blue, IMHO.

It's one of my favourites, but knowing where you're coming from musically (75/76) I can sort of understand what you're saying.

When that is said, there are gems like BS, WH, YGM, Bitch, IGTB, DF and MM on this album, so...

Keith is only missing in action on MM (paradoxically the best song on the album, imo). Mick Taylor is absent on more songs than Keith on SF (BS, SM and maybe Bitch).

Why haven't I heard an outtake version of this??? Outtake or semi-finished?

I enjoy listening to Hey Negrita of the album Black and Blue that I bought when it came out and went straight to one of The Stones concerts in the Hague in 1976.

One of my favourite Stones songs. For me it epitomises what the Stones were all about; Raunchy guitar sound, funky as @#$%&, sleaze in gallons and a great production/mix. I;m not surprised they took it off Ron Wood. I bought Black and Blue on the day of it;s release (on holiday with mum and dad in Bournemouth of all places!) and at the time thought it was a passable album, over the years it has proved to be a fantastic album and now one I listen to on a weekly basis - love it.

Never quite got this one. Sounded like Keith was half asleep on his two chord guitar part. Preston's piano and Mick's raunchy vocal do well to make up for it but I never liked the guitar sounds. This could have been a warm up jam for the Stones but it hardly seemed good enough to put on the record. It just doesn't go anywhere, starts as a loose jam and ends as a loose jam.

I think Keith's addictions were at the point of "not working for the music" for this tune and pretty much all of Black and Blue. Thus they relied on Jagger, Billy Preston and Ronnie to carry the weight, and it shows.

peace

That bridge has everything Sway (and MJ) lacks. Not to mention the second, almost Caribbean-esque, bridge. There aren't many Stones tracks with two distinct bridges, btw.

Kinda like the long studio jams they cut down to make Some Girls tracks.

Hmm... I seemingly hadn't said anything about this track yet...

Since the actual track of the week is "Sway", this gives me an opportunity to build a brief bridge between these two tracks. Let's put it it this way: "Hey Negrita" is for Wood what "Sway" is for Taylor - a showcase what he brings on the table, that is, adds to the band's sound by his idiosyncratic skills. Both numbers are structured to serve best their skills - the other pointing at classical blues rock with masterful guitar solos, the other to the more rhythm-oriented funky waters with hectic riffs.

Anyway, they seemingly had so much ear that they didn't quite believed on their power to carry a whole song with that one king rhythmic idea, and added two bridges to make the song more 'musical'. A decision which serves an arm-chair listener, but not the people at dance-floor to whom this songly, supposedly, was aimed for. In the latter sense, I think its brother song in the album, "Hot Stuff" works better.

But for Jagger the song offers a perfect template to do his thing. I love his way of making noises, just relying on his sense of sonical nuances of the words. The funkiest and sexiest thing in the song, finally, comes from his mouth. He is funny, wit, edgy, arrogant, but damn exciting... just compare that to the hopeless try later with "Sex Drive"... There surely was no need for viagra back then yet...

"Hey Negrita" is not my personal favourites, and I don't think it is very memorable song in the long run, but it is an interesting track from the days when they still were creative, and kept on reforming themselves.

This live version from London in 1976 is pretty good too. I find Jagger's last comment at the end interesting.
