The Beatles gigs in The Philippines were actually rather successful, in that they played to some of the biggest audiences of their career and made a lot of money(which was later taken off them at the airport!) the government crap surrounding them was a farse of course. There are strings on the version I have. They could have been conducted off stage by someone listening to the pre-recording, which was then brought up at the right moment for everyone to hear. Notice that they got slightly out of time with the strings, or vice versa. All that sweating for a synched playback? It would be easier to just have a quartet playing!

The difference with vocal only playbacks is that the backing track starts first, in this case, for As Tears Go By, Mick and Keith are playing on their own live then the strings come in.
