At Woodstock he used a Vox wah, fuzz face and univibe, but I dont hear any of those being engaged during Red House. It's amazing to watch the close up of his his hands when he's playing it!!!

I love Performance! In a way the 'suits' at warner brothers helped it to become the masterpiece that it is by insisting on editing and censoring it, if they hadn't the film as we know it would be very different. A lot of the flash sequences are a direct product of the need for editing(ie to show Mick as early on as possible) and censorship. Even in it's censored form,

15334. Re: "Gomper"
It's not a sitar, trust me. Also, it sounds like 'someone' is playing an instrument with a slide, it could be the electric dulcimer, a 12 string, or maybe even the Vox mando-guitar.

Paint it' Black and Street Fighting Man are the only two officially released stones tracks with Brian playing sitar on them.

Meaningless drivel, I hate how people connect this kind of crap to the stones.

The Beatles gigs in The Philippines were actually rather successful, in that they played to some of the biggest audiences of their career and made a lot of money(which was later taken off them at the airport!) the government crap surrounding them was a farse of course. The 'real' people of The Philippines loved them and still do.

There is no sitar on Gomper, or the Satanic Matesties album for that matter. I think that may be Brian's electric dulcimer. The flute is actually a recorder.

It sounds like there is a 12 string, but also another standard guitar playing the line.

If so I'd think it likely that it's the 3pup custom in to a Vox UL-7120 or one of the smaller version of the same amp. The fuzz guitars heard on Between the Buttons are definitely done with these now very rare amps.

Some of their more adventerous singles probably wouldn't have worked live. Plus, if you're promoting a single, I guess the general public is more interested in hearing the actual recording than a raw live rendition. I'm downloading as I type this, thanks for uploading it with sssoul.

They mimed and played live right from the start. But yes, there's been the odd occasion where they had some 'special' pre-recordings such as the palladium show in 1967

How about some nice informative links to keep it going? This is one of the best sites about the Mellotron: And, here's a site with lots of examples of the various sounds available for the instrument:

There are strings on the version I have. They could have been conducted off stage by someone listening to the pre-recording, which was then brought up at the right moment for everyone to hear. Notice that they got slightly out of time with the strings, or vice versa. All that sweating for a synched playback? It would be easier to just have a quartet playing!

I wonder if they didn't go over in 1968 due to Brian being busted? It seems strange that they didn't promote JJF on the show, did they air the promo video?

No arguments here, just curious. The difference with vocal only playbacks is that the backing track starts first, in this case, for As Tears Go By, Mick and Keith are playing on their own live then the strings come in. Ah, maybe Keith's guitar isn't actually live, but pre-recorded as well. It sounds very different to any of the studio versions though. I haven't actually s

Indeed, but, there is no BEST, everyone mentioned does a great job in the context of the bands they played with!

Are you sure those strings are pre-recorded? That'd be hard to pull off! I think there was a small pit band at Ed Sullivan.
