I have the Ed Sullivan DVD and I'm pretty sure that the performance of As Tears Go By is just Mick and Keith with his guitar and nothing else. I think the reason for many tunes been missed off the show is because (with the exception of their appearance in '67) they were only on it when in the States touring. They just performed whatever tracks were relevant to the time.

Ed Sullivan was great, but nothing compared to Ready Steady Go. That was the ULTIMATE 60's music show.

What I meant to add is that I alsop beleive Keith is performing live on As Tears Go By. I've seen enough footage to tell the difference between when someone is moming to actually playing. I'm sure you can see the strings being strummed and everything.

thanks Big Al - it does look that way to me too, but i'm easily confused.
if we're both right, though, all we have to explain is how they synched it with those strings.
meanwhile i may have succeeded in copying the track - now if i can just upload it for HM ...

There are strings on the version I have.

They could have been conducted off stage by someone listening to the pre-recording, which was then brought up at the right moment for everyone to hear. Notice that they got slightly out of time with the strings, or vice versa.

All that sweating for a synched playback? It would be easier to just have a quartet playing! tongue sticking out smiley

It seems to me that up'till66 everything was live. Then thystarted singing live to an instrumental prerecorded tape but it was not from the record. Maybe they recorded it earlier that day. strange that the backing track allways faded out instead of ending like a live performance so its hard to tell how it was done.

not sure if backing tracks from 1966 onwards were really recorded for the occasion. they sound like original records in my ears and thats probaply the reason why they are faded out.

They mimed and played live right from the start. smiling smiley

But yes, there's been the odd occasion where they had some 'special' pre-recordings such as the palladium show in 1967

here you go, HM - i sure hope this works:

meanwhile, just a couple of historical details from the Why Do You Think They Call It Trivia Department:
~ Ed Sullivan wasn't a music program, it was a variety show, and you bet RSG was miles hipper -
Ed Sullivan wasn't in the hip business.
~ it's not actually right that until january 67 the Stones only appeared on Ed Sullivan
during tours of the US - neither of their 1966 appearances were connected with US tours.
~ the first time they did Sullivan in playback + vocals mode was september 66 (their second 66 Sullivan appearance),
but as HM noted they'd done lots of that (and full playback) on other shows right from the start.

does anyone here feel like talking about the logistics of miming to playback? it's an interesting skill to have,
and the early Stones were quite good at it, when they wanted to be. i believe one reason for doing it that way
was that there was no way that the TV sound people could be relied on to get the mix remotely right,
especially on shows like Ed Sullivan where it was "you and then a washing powder" and then
Topo Gigio, an ice-skating act or whatever.

I don't know about the strings, but i'm 99% certain Keith is actually playing the guitar. You can see that he is plucking the strings in time. On known mimed performances on shows like Top Of The Pops etc he just pretends and its very obvsious its not live.

Some of their more adventerous singles probably wouldn't have worked live. Plus, if you're promoting a single, I guess the general public is more interested in hearing the actual recording than a raw live rendition.

I'm downloading as I type this, thanks for uploading it with sssoul. smiling smiley

Exactly what I was thinking of, with sssoul - thanks.

Anybody know where the TV performace of "Heart Of Stone" comes from? I'm talking about the one where they're standing in front of a striped background (probably in B&W on the TV but blue & purple on the poster I have), Charlie's on a riser, Bill is wearing a leather jacket... The band is playing along to a backing track and I'm pretty sure Mick is lip-synching as well. Brian's got the Vox and Keith a Les Paul - I figure it's very early '65. No luck finding it on youtube but I'm pretty sure I have it on VHS somewhere.

This might well be the case. Even today, on shows like Saturday Night Live and Letterman, the sound is frequently terrible, or cues are obviously missed. You can tell they're playing at low volume and trying to compensate.
