Tumblin dice: best year 1975 (or 1973?)

Everythings right in this version. Listen to the interplay between Mick and Keith. Sure, the solo is bad but who cares. The song swings.

1973: Taylor is great here.

1975-76 the best bluesy rocky swingin' Tumbling Dice. My favourite is Knebworth.

Nowdays they prefer the gospel version (like on EOMS) Not bad at all. Two different styles.

It"s strange that the 1972 live versions are not so good, or at least the later versions are better.

So my rate:
1. 1975-76.
2. EOMS (studio)
3. ABB Tour version
4. 1972-73 live version
5. 1978-1981 live version

Anyway: I think TD is the ultimate Rolling Stones song.

For me the 1989/90 version is the best. By far. 73/75 versions are too slow IMO. And the song needs back up-vocals.

One of my favourite songs ever, no doubt about it.

Me, I pick the 1995 version. Perfect tempo, Keith focusing on the riffs, great solos by Ronnie, the background vocals, the horns blowin' loud...

And it was second in the set lists, and I always liked how the beginnings of the concerts sounded with an obscure Not Fade Away and then... Boom! Tumbling Dice right in your face!

Nothing can beat Brussels, but the '75 versions sure have that slow groove I love.

I dont like the 90s versions with too much back up vocals, horns etc. Keep it tight, and swing like in 75 although Taylor was kinda needed. Strange about 1972, it's the only song I dont care for from that tour. Maybe it doesnt fit the setlist. It's perfect in 1975.

Much as I love the July 13th 1975 LA version, the Brussels Affair rendition is up there as arguably one of THE greatest live tracks ever, by ANYONE.

It's perfect in just about every sense of the word.

I don't think they've played it any better ever than they did in 1994 actually. 1989-90 was good but Voodoo was excellent. Those 70s versions are a bit lumpy. I like them, I just think the 1990s band made it a much tighter song that moves a bit quicker compared to the record - and the record SWINGS. The 1975 performance is more like mashed potatoes.

<1973: Taylor is great here.>

He certainly is. So is the whole band. There are different mixes of that peformance and the one posted is a good one. When I think of the greatest performances of the band THAT one immediately jumps to mind. A performance for the ages.

It has been pointed out before, but THAT performance demonstrates a difference in vision between Keith and Taylor. During the L&G performance Keith clearly shuts down Taylor's lead to the point where he demonstrates to Taylor what he wants played (as if Taylor doesn't "get it"). A little over a year later Taylor's vision prevailed and we have this marvelous performance.

Did Jagger approve? You bet he did! "Keep on doin' it!"

Best year = 72.
Mick Taylor, Nicky Hopkins = case closed!
smoking smiley

I prefer the 94 version (which I think is awesome) to the 75 one.

best version ever - the 'Keith's lost his pick - has anyone got a pick for Keith' one on Handsome Girls (Detroit, I think)..great long intro and a coda at the end to die for. raggedly glorious.

have to say, its the one warhorse I'd miss most if it were dropped.

As conservative as it may sound, IMO no version can top Brussels 1973
followed by... Chicago 07/24/75 and Detroit 1978
...and of course any 1972 version is up there

Interesting. Is there more to these dynamics between Taylor Richards and Jagger? It's almost a Mach 2 of the twisted relationship between Brian Mick and Keith - well far from it really - but when it comes to the music. I think it was good for Keith, he needed that threat (Jagger/Taylor).

I actually prefer the way keith hears the song and could do without the taylor addition... in '73 he goes into a grandiose chord riff at the end of the song (the "you got to roll me" refrain) that is very un-Stoneslike, more like something Springsteen's band would do. In fact there may be a particular Springsteen tune it reminds me of.

so my favorite is '72--when mick's singing on this number is magnificent.

How ANYONE can possibly rate the 75 (or 76) version is beyond me.

Totally ruined by Jagger's atrocious 'vocals'. Not only is his voice awful, he is hardly makng any effort - well just the minimum - to put any feeling whatsoever into this jewel of a song.

I'll have to dig out Handsome Girls to see if that's as good as Gazza claims.

Agree that 1989/90 were good.

But 73/72 anyday. Just a joy. So tight and so free.

In my opinion...

#1 1973
#2 1972
#3 Voodoo Lounge tour
#4 ABB tour
#5 SW/UJ tour

Houston 6/25/72 1st show, and Philadelphia 7/21/72 1st show are both among the best versions of the song I've ever heard. Brussels '73 of course is excellent. I like many of the '75/'76 and '78 versions, and many modern day versions are nice, but I like the '72/'73 performances more than any other era.

The way I see it,the 1975 Tumbling Dice is out of the question.

1) 1972/1973

2) 1978 (namely Detroit)

3) Up For Debate - For me,it depends on what I'm in the mood for.

I still think that Hopkins playing instead of Preston gives '72 an edge over '73. I saw neither tour first-hand though, as I wasn't yet born.

In defence of 1975; the clip/concert posted by and from LA forum is not comparable to the the greater versions from that tour. It's like putting Hyde Park 1969 and GYYYO in the same category. Not only because of the performance, but also because of the dry and flat mix.

I realy like the solos Mick Taylor did on that song. My favorite is from the '72 tour rehearsals in Montreaux.
