IN the Spring of 2003 I saw a band called The Datsuns in a small club. A friend of mine was promoting the show, so afterwards I hung out in the hallway near the dressing room. A strange thing happened a few minutes later. A man came walking down the hallway, looked very very familiar and very much like Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones. I thought to myself "why would JPJ be here"?
Well, it was JPJ. He flew in for the day to see the band live and to meet with them. He ended up producing their next CD. He was in the USA, 3 days later they had the "How The West Was Won" press party in NYC.
Before he went in to meet the band me, the promoter and house sound guy chatted for about 5 minutes with him. Posed for some photos and was in a great mood.
He did not mind chatting with me, because I was not loading him with Led Zep questions. I am a fan of his 2 solo CD's and asked him about a recording technique he used a couple years earlier. He lit up and was happy to talk about the song in question.
I usually have a drumhead on me when I go to shows where I may have access. I got this signed for my gameroom, I asked him to write what he wrote on it in case I meet Page & Plant and get them to sign it. Unfortunatly, a friend met Plant a year later and showed the drumhead to him and he would not sign it. He said he does not sign instruments. Page is the same way...
