You'd need to have a capo on the 2nd fret if you use open D so you get the correct inbetween low open E's for the chorus's etc.

I thought that LIB was in open G with the capo on the 5th fret, in C? The slide can be played in that way as well. I don't know what's on the album but I know what it sounds like. Anyone else play LIB that way?

Lately my favorite open G song to bang around on is "I'm Going Down". What an awesome riff that one is. Turn it up!
"Too Tough", as well.

For the person that was looking for IORR in open G (terraplane I believe).....you can find this version on any boot that I've heard from the '76 European tour. He does all the Chuck licks on the same guitar that he plays "Brown Sugar" on so I'm assuming it's still 5-string open G. You can see it in the video of the Paris show. And yeah, you can still do all those Berry licks.....it's pretty easy actually.

Also, I believe "Hot Stuff" is in standard. I've heard that the studio version of "Gimme Shelter" is in an open tuning but I remain unconvinced. You certainly can play it in open D or E but you can also play it in open G and standard. I use standard. I know any live version I've ever seen has been done in standard. As far as SFM, JJF go, the original versions were in open E or D and Keith later started playing them live in open G, capoed up to B.

Why the doubts, thats how the main guitars are played on the studio version!?

The main opening 'riffs' and the rhythm guitars heard throughout the song are in open E or D(with a capo). You cannot play it the same as the studio version in open G or standard. the lead is in standard.

I dont think, aside from their May 1968 NME appearance they've ever really used open E/D much, if at all.

His Majesty........you can play the intro in open G the same way you play it in standard......because they only three strings used are tuned the same in both tunings. It may very well have been played in open E or D on the original recording, but I don't see why some people swear this is the case when you can do it in other tunings as well. I've heard lots of different accounts of what tuning it was originally played in. That's why I have doubts.

Yes, you can play any number of songs in different tunings, but they sound different to the studio versions when you do this.

For the chorus's you would need to be in open E to be able to do the 1+2+3+4+ / E-A-E-A-E-B-E-B strummed rhythmic parts which have the low E. That can be simulated in standard but you dont get the open E power type chord inbetween.

Also, you cant play the verse parts in standard which have slight melodic things going on, but keep the low C# throughout. You can in open G, but then you have a problem when it comes to the chorus.

Just to show what I'm meaning I recorded this quickly: [www.esnips.com]

Well for the slide guitar part you have that really low note at the beginning which is Keith sliding up on the 6th string.

Maybe somebody already said this, but you should just be able to ask open-g or Open-G

His Majesty.......yeah that's true.......I've not gone to the trouble of working out the original studio version of "Gimme Shelter" note for note either to see if it works in open tuning or whatever. You can play the intro in various tunings. It may very well have been played in open E or D but what I just mentioned is another reason I'm not totally convinced. I've never expirimented with different tunings to find which one works. I play it more like the '72/'73 versions so I do it in standard tuning. I'm not trying to argue that it wasn't played in open E or D, I'm just saying I've never sat down and worked out the original studio version NOTE FOR NOTE. Which makes a diffence. I could play along with it in any tuning but to do a note perfect version I would most likely have to use the same tuning, which I have never taken the time to figure out. If you have done so, which you apparently have, then you're probably right. But please understand that I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying that I don't know whether you're right or wrong. I've read accounts where people swear it was done in open G .......I don't think it was played in open G, but somebody does ....but the reason I said I was unconvinced about the original recording being done in open E or D was not because I disagreed but because I just wasn't sure. BTW, I don't have time to listen to your sample right now but I'll check it out later tonight.

Well if you are talking about live then I guess so. For studio work, they used it prominently on BB & LIB (not to mention Brian Jones using it for slide). These use open D/E:

SFM, JJF, Prodigal Son, Stray Cat Blues, Salt of the Earth as well as the slide guitar parts on other songs on that album.

Gimme Shelter & YCAGWYW (as you & others pointed out) & You Got the Silver as well as the slide guitar parts on Midnight Rambler, LIB, Monkey Man.

I don't know if they used this tuning thereafter. Perhaps on You Gotta Move but I haven't bothered to try and work that one out.

Child of the Moon uses an open tuning as well. I don't have it at hand but it is probably open G.

I haven't really learned it note for note, just the general feel and I noticed some things that seemed to confirm(to my ears) open E.

I'm sure I have read Keith saying it was recorded in open E, but that might just be me mixing interviews up throughout the years.

It apparently has multi-layered guitars for the intro etc, so it could well be in standard tuning, but I'm certain it's not open g though.

His Majesty......yeah I don't think it's in open G either but I have heard that. It is very hard to tell though because, as you mentioned, there are various layers of guitar on there.

To Many in Open G live - They are all running togther and thats the limitation in playing in Open G the rich texture of the ringing of the same 3 notes gets old especially after 40 years.

Sometimes Vibrato is more interesting and creative to the ears.lol

here's a version of "Gimme Shelter" done with 3 guitars.....no bass....just two rhythm guitars and a lead guitar.

yes it is me playing but the lead guitar part is a throwaway take....there are some good licks in there but it's not my best......its' the only one I had on the computer right now....please don't think its' the best I can do !!! haha

I have often thought that Keith should play Gimmie Shelter in Open E live and Ronnie could play the part Keith does now. I think it would sound awesome. I mean Ronnie doesn't really play too much on the live versions, just lots of fills really

<She´s So Cold>
Standard tuning on ER.

Gimmie Shelter is played in open D on LIB. You don´t get it exactly like this with various tunings. Keith has never captured the same feel and the same notes live with standard tuning.

There must be a capo on at the 2nd fret then because, as i mentioned before, there are low E's during the chorus's etc.

It doesn't look any different from a guitar with standard tuning.
