How many Stones songs are in Open G?
Posted by: COUSINLOU ()

I'm just looking to practice them all while I have this guitar tuned down.
Here's what I have so far:

Brown Sugar
Honky Tonk Women
All Down the Line
Can't you hear me knocking
Before they make me run
It won't take long

SFM from Ya-Ya's sounds like it's in open G too.

Shake Your Hips
Rip This Joint
Ventilator Blues

JJF is believe was recorded in open E though they play it in open G now. I'm pretty sure Wild Horses is in standard tuning.

That depends; Keith's been playing it in open G recently even with a 12-string guitar with 10 strings.

All in all, I think Keith's been messing around and experimenting with tunings quite a lot over the years. I think he's even tried playing IORR in open G which in my opinion doesn't make sense but if you play it hundreds of times, well, anything might be enough to make it at least somewhat exciting again.

You are right. I was only talking about the original recorded versions. I haven't listened to the Stripped version for years. It doesn't make sense to me to play it in open G but I guess it's his song so whatever works for him.

Mick Taylor uses a nashville tuning on the original. That is he he uses a six string but replaces the four low strings with one octave higher strings from a 12 string to give a fake 12 string effect.

Keith actually plays the solo. It's very nice.

Casinoo Boogie

do you mean open G or open G capoed to another key? Cause "Tumbling Dice" and "Happy" are in open G but they're capoed up to the key of B.....if you include these songs that are capoed up to higher keys, then you'll have a long long list.....

JJF and SFM are done live in open G, capoed at B
YCAGWYW may have originally been done in open E or D (basically the same thing) but I think its' played live today in open G, caped at C
Rip This Joint was done live in open G capoed up to B in the 70's.....Keith may play it differently now....
HTW, If You Can't Rock Me, Can't Your Hear Me Knocking, Brown Sugar, Wild Horses (live version) All Down The Line, probably Ventilator Blues, Before They Make Me Run, and Silver Train are all done in open G without a capo.....IORR was done in open G without a capo on the '76 European tour.....they play around with that stuff all the time........I also was of the opinion that Keith played the original version of Wild Horses in standard tuning but a transcription of that version that I have in a magazine disagrees.....so I dunno. But there's lots more than I just mentioned. Loads.

Not for the original studio version.

It is, as has already been pointed out actually in open E with the capo at the 7th fret.

Street Fighting Man(open D), Jumpin' Jack Flash(open E), Gimme Shelter(open E or D)

Brian uses open G for Little Red Rooster

NOT ENOUGH!

I think Let It Bleed (key of C) is in standard tuning though capoed at the 3rd fret. The slide is open D or E and capoed at the 3rd or 1st fret.

Hot stuff is standard tuning.

I'm surprised to hear that YCAGWYW (key of C) is in open E and capoed at the 7th fret (wouldn't that be 8th fret?) as the action on the guitar would make it difficult to play. Especially considering it is on a 12 string.

I think if Keith has played IORR in open G (live that is) then it could have been a hybrid tuning. He might have dropped the A string to G but left the high E string tuned to E otherwise he wouldn't be able to play those Chuck Berry licks. Unless of course Ron Wood did those parts live. I haven't listened to that live version. Where can I hear this version?

As mentioned elsewhere SFM was open E. Beggars Banquet was the open E/D album. SFM, Salt of the Earth, Prodigal Son & Stray Cat Blues all used that tuning.

Whats the difference between open g and open e? Just the capo?

And, is Gimmie shelter in open or standard tuning?

Hot stuff, is standard tuning isnt it? Or was that just live in 76?

From standard tuning...

Basically open E is exactly that, you tune the guitar so that when you play it with no fingers on the fret board it plays the low standard E chord.

You tune these strings up 5th(a tone), 4th(a tone) and 3rd(semitone).

the main motif for Gimme Shelter is in open E or D with a capo at the 2nd fret.

For open D you tune down, 6th(a tone), 3rd(a semitone) 2nd(a tone) 1st(a tone)

Open G you also tune down, 6th(a tone), 5th(a tone), 1st(a tone)

Basically not much difference between open E and G. With open E you get to keep use 6th string. You can play the same licks as in open G. You just transpose them a string lower.

I'm sure Hot Stuff is standard tuning. It's basically two chords Em and C.

I have always played Gimme Shelter in standard tuning. I've never tried in in open E. I'm gonna try it now but I'm doubtful.

Why doubtful, the studio version is in that tuning!?

The originally version of Wild Horses is done in open-g. It's not a 12 string guitar, but a 6 string acoustic with Nashville tuning. Then there's another acoustic tuned in open g, the solo is played in standard tuning.

Yep. I just tried it and it certainly works in open D.

i believe i finally have this straight, thanks to our friend Open-G:
the original Wild Horses has one guitar in standard and one Nashville-strung;
it's the Stripped version that's in open G.

Actually. I'd always thought the original wild horses was in standard but after the comments here I tried it in open G. It sounded very good.
