The pics mean nothing regarding his condition. He would hardly be punching the air, but to say he looks frail and weak is just being alarmist.

After Keith recovers, he should do the GOIN' OUT OF MY HEAD/CAN'T TAKE MY EYES OFF OF YOU medley in concert.

Keef,

Don't push yourself just for this damned Europe tour !! Get well 100% and then go out and rock!

LeedsLungs71 you are absolutely correct. No need for Keith to be in a hurry. They can make up the dates at a later time and might actually draw better if they don't have to compete with the World Cup.

If you think about it, this whole thing just adds to the legend of Keith Richards. Anyone else would just have had some typical surgery. But only Keith would have to have a hole drilled in his head...in New Zealand, no less.

Good point cirrhosis.

No candy-ass prostate operation for our guy! He's hard-core.

Dont know if this has been posted...

"A Wellington neurosurgeon said it was likely Richards had suffered a chronic subdural haematoma, which was common in elderly people after falls. The condition was a buildup of blood and pressure on the brain and could be fatal if left untreated.

Recovery usually took a few weeks and patients could travel by plane about a week after the surgery, he said."

The first part doesnt look so amusing.
But please note and behold the last two lines;
there might be some hope after all?
At least he may not need to dwell in NZ too long.

This the news so far from ITN in the UK

Rolling Stone Keith Richards "continues to improve as expected" following surgery after his fall from a palm tree.

The 62-year-old rocker had an operation yesterday to relieve pressure on his brain, but a spokesman said he has already been "up and about chatting, and phoning New York".

A statement stated: "Contrary to stories in newspapers in New Zealand and the UK, Keith Richards did not undergo a second operation.

"The first and only operation was done on Monday, May 8, and was 100% successful. There was no brain damage. He continues to improve as expected.

"The Rolling Stones `A Bigger Bang European Tour' will begin in June with details to follow shortly."

Dates for the continental leg of the tour have been put back, with the late May opening gig in Barcelona now set for June.

Richards underwent the operation at the Ascot Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand.

He suffered a brain haemorrhage following the accident in Fiji two weeks ago.

The operation involved drilling a hole in the skull to drain blood from the brain.

His spokesman previously said yesterday: "Keith was under observation in Auckland following a fall in Fiji and was feeling well since being examined by doctors last week.

"However, after complaining of headaches yesterday (Sunday) doctors thought it prudent to move ahead with a small operation to remove the pressure.

"The operation was a complete success with Keith already up and chatting with his family today. He will need a few weeks' recuperation."

Stones deny Richards suffered brain damage
10 May 2006
[www.stuff.co.nz]

LOS ANGELES: Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, recovering from a head injury caused by a fall last month in Fiji, has not suffered brain damage, a spokeswoman for the band has claimed.

The Stones' New York-based publicist, Fran Curtis, issued a statement denying a report in the New Zealand Herald (www.nzherald.co.nz/section/6/story.cfm?c_id=6&objectid=10381078) that Richards, 62, had undergone two surgeries and that doctors were concerned about brain damage.

"Keith Richards did not undergo a second operation. The first and only operation was done on Monday, May 8, and was 100 per cent successful," the band's statement said. "There was no brain damage. He continues to improve as expected."

The European leg of the band's A Bigger Bang world tour would begin in June, the statement said.

The hard-living Richards, a founding member and mainstay of the band with lead singer Mick Jagger since the Stones formed in the early 1960s, has been in Auckland, New Zealand, under medical observation and treatment since taking a fall while on vacation in the island resort of Fiji in late April.

Last week, a spokeswoman for the band said Richards had suffered only a mild concussion and would not need surgery.

But the band issued a statement on Monday acknowledging that after complaining of headaches, he had undergone "a small operation to remove the pressure."

The New Zealand Herald, citing an unnamed source, reported that Richards had undergone surgery 11 days earlier, on April 28, to stop bleeding in his skull, and that medical staff feared for his life at that time.

According to the Herald, he was discharged a few days later but was readmitted to the hospital after passing out and complaining of major headaches.

The second operation, which the newspaper described as major surgery, involved drilling holes in Richards' skull, and removing a portion of the skull, to remove blood clots.

Ascot Hospital in Auckland declined comment on the report.

Richards' two daughters – 21-year-old Theodora and 19-year-old Alexandra – also were reported to have arrived at the hospital to join their mother at Richards' bedside.

AdvertisementAdvertisementThe Stones' publicists have given few details of Richards' fall, which happened after the band's tour through Japan, China, Australia and New Zealand. Newspaper accounts have variously reported that he fell from a tree or from a watercraft while on vacation.

This isn't funny; it's serious. Not just about the band but the hundreds of millions of euros that will be lost if the Stones don't do the rest of the tour. Mick will be furious!

i think that respectfully we are beyond "the hundreds of millions of eros that will be lost if..." stage here...

if this second procedure; and now calling the specialist in...
the latest prognoses reported etc... if that stuff is anywhere near accurate...

...as reported here and also on a newer thread just started when the sun piece broke...

...if the older kids are all there with him too...
i mean did you read the Sun piece?

this is a little beyond the $$ and inconveniences at this point...
i'm not the alarm bell ringer...but now i am greatly more concerned than i was a few hours ago...

As triplelicks mentioned above, Fran Curtis issued a statement. When there's no official statement, people complain they are being lied to, then when an official statement is issued, people chose to beleive The Sun instead. Go figure....

The official statement:

The Stones' New York-based publicist, Fran Curtis, issued a statement denying a report in the New Zealand Herald that Richards, 62, had undergone two surgeries and that doctors were concerned about brain damage.

"Keith Richards did not undergo a second operation. The first and only operation was done on Monday, May 8, and was 100 per cent successful," the band's statement said. "There was no brain damage. He continues to improve as expected."

I have no clue what Keith's current diagnoses are, but here's what I've noticed with this latest exchange of new reports.

The reports that say insiders believe Keith may have sustained some brain damage, may be referring to damage secondary to his fall.

The reports from the RS publicist that say there was no brain damage, may be referring to damage secondary to his recent brain bleed and surgery.

People can walk and talk and play guitars and still have sustained damage to the brain. The damage will show signs of decreasing with time and therapy, but if damage has occured to Keith's brain, no one on earth at this point knows how long and to what eventual degree it will effect his daily life.

thank you Triplelicks.
"it is understood that doctors are concerned about damage to his brain" - well of course, that's always the fear with head injuries,
that's why they do scans to begin with, why they monitor the patient, why (if necessary) they relieve the pressure caused by any bleeding.
at the same time Stones Inc of course is doing their best to protect Keith's privacy - which of course is the right thing.
how horrid that the hospital can't get more of its staff to understand that patients ' privacy cannot be horsed around with.
sigh - this is all so very hard.

Keith, be well - all the way, baby, all the way

The SUN pay doctors and nurses and all sorts of health people a lot of money to get a great story for their front pages. Some times people add something to make thge story more interesting. Sure the Stones camp do not want to have any bad rumours flying around, but I would not use the SUN as my main source of Keith's healt situation. And I would say the same for official sources. It is probably something in the middle.

This news in from The Daily Mirror, The Suns tabloid rival in the UK.

KEITH 'NOT IN PERIL'
By Allison Martin
THE Rolling Stones last night laughed off claims that Keith Richards was paralysed and could be left braindamaged after his fall from a tree.

A spokesman also rubbished reports that the 62-year-old rocker's family were holding a bedside vigil after a second operation in New Zealand to remove a blood clot from his brain.

He added: "There is no brain damage, there is no paralysis, there was no second operation and there is no bedside vigil.

"Keith has had one operation and has since been on the phone laughing and joking."

These scandal-tabloids like the Sun also spice up
their Big Time World War Headlines with pictures of Patti
while in stress or fleeing from paparazzis or whatever;
all in purpose of giving us an image of disaster.
Right now the whole world's tabloids make profit on this.

I think it's disgusting that people are making a profit off of someone's pain. It's really horrible. With this Keith is suffering whatever the truth is, and they are making the fans suffer as well by giving out (probably) false iformation.

I hope Keith gets better soon!

Following Keith's medical situation minute by minute is a real ordeal. One minute brain damages an no more performing, the other he's up and chatting, joking and laughing.
But right now I'm happy because of the latest report. Hope it stands that way.
