IORR is almost the worst album ever IMHO with a lot of cheesy ballads. The best track of the sessions (Drift Away) was ommitted in favour of the weaker Ain’t Too Proud To Beg. B&B is much better in any way, but too short.

Ain't Too Proud To Beg blows away Drift Away.

Thanks for specifically coming to a thread about an awesome song to trash it. This is why I don't visit this site very often. BTW, Black and Blue is a horrible, disjointed album.

Who cares what he says? Stay. I love BOTH
IORR and Black n Blue albums
and I love both
Keith and Mick
Stay and pick out the true poetry written in this thread.
Focus on that if you're looking for love.

Ain't Too Proud To Beg blows away Drift Away.

I agree.
While not as great as the original Temptations version, the Stones' Ain't Too Proud To Beg is leaps and bounds beyond their stagnant cover of Drift Away.
The Stones made the right decision to not release Drift Away as they probably knew they couldn't come close to the original.
In this world there's only room for one version of Drift Away , and that is sung by Dobie Gray. Period.

Didn't Carly Simon try to get a co-writing credit on this song ? Seems to me I read somewhere that she claimed she and Jagger wrote the song together....? Anyone else remember that ?

You might have read it somewhere in this thread as I just did yesterday.

Wow ...considering we're all here because of our love for this band, this particular song seems to divide opinion - and the album it's from too! I have always loved IORR and it was only my 2nd Stones album. TTNG was not an immediate favourite but certainly a grower. Lovely delicate work from Taylor and Hopkins. Life would be poorer without it. I always thought it was a Taylor Jagger song and MT was distraught when not credited. This and TWFNO.

Same for me, it was probably after I started getting bored with the other tracks that I really gave ones like this and Really Want To Be Your Friend a good listen, and then I have loved both ever since!

HMS, stick to your real name and don't use this Monsoon Ragoon name. You're just as embarrassing by somehow remarkably elevating your status as a pathetic Stones fan.

I don't need it for weight loss, but I do have it in the house and add a few tablespoons to my tea, when I remember. It's supposed to have all kinds of health benefits, including boosting your immune system. If it didn't taste so bad, I'd guzzle it all day. eye popping smiley

Ain't Too Proud To Beg blows away Drift Away.

First 3 songs on IORR just totally rock(and roll), probably the hardest rocking trio of any Stones album. And then Til The Next Goodbye, which does not sound out of place because that's what the Stones do. Not sure what to make of Drift Away

Almost every song would divide opinion. I HATE Start me Up. Always have. With a passion....Whilst I'd be hard pressed to find (m)any similar opinions... I THINK I'd find some that also don't like it. If so - divided opinions.

I love TTNG as a song, and it HAS some beautiful playing, but, as I mentioned way back in this thread, the production of this song, and the rest of the album, is as flat as a tack. B&B just JUMPS out of the speakers compared to the lacklustre sound of IORR as an album.

I agree. IORR has some of that «dead sound» as some of the Led Zeppelin-albums had, imo. The run with GHS and IORR has to be the worst produced (sound-wise) Stones-albums in history. There are exceptions on both albums, though: Angie sounds wonderful and crisp, as does Short And Curlies, for some reason. Fingerprint File sounds good, too.

Till The Next Goodbye is ok...kind of sappy...TWFNO is awesome, as are Dance Little Sister, and 3 opening songs and of course FF....cant believe they haven't dusted that off in the last 15 years to play live!!!

Put on If You Can't Rock Me first, and then put on Hey Negrita. The latter has a clarity and punch that is sorely missed in the brilliant first song – unfortunately..

Till The Next Goodbye is indeed rather cheesy but still a masterpiece compared to horrible If You Really Want To Be My Friend... TTNG has some good moments, but some truly bad as well.

...IORR´s ballads are not the best they´ve ever written except TWFNO which is indeed a good one. IORR for sure is a better album than boring GHS but imo not as good as Black And Blue.

Perfect comparison. Hey Negrita just leaps out at you in clear pure classic and clean sound. If you can't rock me is a jumble. Yet of the two actual songs, I prefer the latter, I just wish it sounded better.

So you're talking production, correct? The punch is there, Charlies drums are dynamite. I love the extended bass line in the outake version also!!

I love the lyrics.

"...some cider vinegar and some Eldeberry wine, can cure all your ills, they can't cure mine - your Louisiana recipes let me down.."
I love that.

I confess - I had never realized until this outtake that there are two acoustics. And I think it is Keith in slide.

edit I see that someone else pretty much posted everything I just said

The lyrics were always great for me too, the song as a whole may not be a classic but it is very enjoyable, beautifully played, snd gas a great chorus vocal hook.

IORR isnt as strong as GHS and B&B but it contains some stellar tracks such as TWFNO, the magnificent Fingerprint File, the title track, Luxury, and I have to say IYRWTBMF I have always loved. Sweet soul music with lovely vocal backup. "Friend" isnt high on list of many but I do think its an excellent track in the soul tradition of Let it Loose.

I love just about everything about If You Can't Rock Me, but sorry, the drums sounds like knit pins on cardboard boxes recorded in a room full of other noises. His playing is dynamite, but not his sound - at least not to this listener's ears smiling smiley

Is Taylor using an octave pedal or has he simply tuned down in the beginning of the riff in the middle there, btw?

No, the intro-riff is Keith. I mean when they start the funky riff in the middle of the song. Darryl played it on bass when they played it live in 2002, but it didn't sound quite the same. I'm pretty sure it's Taylor starting it (before Keith's starts playing his bit).

Sorry, I meant the intro melody. In the middle it sounds like the stings tuned down, and a bit of fuzz or distortion.

Jimmy Miller had a lot to do with all of those albums sounding great so without him there was a big drop off until a proper replacement was found. Glyn Johns mixed "Fingerprint File" and Keith Harwood did the rest. I'd have to properly listen, but Sticky Fingers blows away much of what came after it.

I think it's an octave down pedal during the middle and outro. I believe Taylor had the Colorsound Octivider.
