Hello,

Here is the situation concerning Mick Taylor playing on SATISFACTION during the 2013 US Tour.

It is in Washington that he changed from electric to acoustic

I was at San Jose when he played it live and on electric for the very first time.

San Jose was an amazing show, surely the best of the 17 shows I have seen since 2012.

here's a nice article on Mick and the Les Paul he played the night of the Jack Bruce Tribute:

A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF GWYN ASHTON
AustralianMusician Nov 13, 2016 Articles, Special Features
Gwyn and Mick Taylor. Pic by Arnie Goodman

It was not a typical week in the life of expat Aussie guitarist, songwriter Gwyn Ashton but a mighty fine one all the same. Gwyn suddenly found himself anointed as ex-Rolling Stone Mick Taylor’s guitar tech for the night at a Jack Bruce tribute gig in London which featured Ginger Baker. It was a gig where he also got to hang out with with Lulu, Dennis Chambers (drummer for Jack Bruce and now Santana), Mo Foster, Neil Murray, and Bernie Marsden. Gwyn explains the legendary night in his own words …

No two weeks are the same for me as I tend to live my life without too much routine. My life’s journey this year alone has taken me across Australia, Russia, Europe, The Balkans a couple of times and I’ve found time to record three recordings (an acoustic album with Chris Finnen in Adelaide, a stoner, psychedelic album in Czech Republic and a blues-rock EP in Serbia). I’ve been detained at Moscow airport for eight hours for overstaying my visa by two hours, forcing me to rebook flights back to Amsterdam. I had to pay a fine and pay for a new visa then fly to Amsterdam via Helsinki, pick my van up to drive to play a midnight show in the south of Belgium the same day, catching a HORRENDOUS overnight train that must have been 60 years old with no ventilation or air-con from St Petersburg to Moscow. I missed a flight to Portugal, caught ferries, was searched at borders outside the EU by heavily-armed border patrols in all five Balkan countries, performed live on radio and TV networks in 15 European territories and bought midnight burritos in Prague!

gwyn3
I do my own recording, mixing, graphic design and even some of my own photography, so my weeks are pretty varied. However I can tell you about THIS week in particular. In between mixing my next album, I became ex Rolling Stones’ guitarist Mick Taylor’s guitar tech for a Jack Bruce tribute concert at Shepherds Bush Empire in London. He borrowed my Les Paul as someone broke his pickup switch and I helped him onstage with his gear. Even after all these years, he’s still playing like he always did, still one of the finest guitarists in the world and I admire him so much. We’ve played together through Europe a few times over the past 12 years or so and it was great to catch up with him and some of the other 60 wonderful musicians at this event, including Ginger Baker, whom I videoed playing a drum solo from 6’ away and his official Facebook page shared my footage. How cool is that? There were a pile of other musicians who I got to hang out with a bit that night: Lulu, Dennis Chambers (drummer for Jack Bruce and now Santana). Mo Foster, Neil Murray, Bernie Marsden and Terry Reid, who was Page’s first choice as lead vocalist for Led Zeppelin. A dream come true for little ol’ me.

Pete Brown was running the show, he wrote a lot of those great songs for Cream – White Room, Sunshine Of Your Love and many others. Pete was one of the first people I came into contact with when I moved to England, 20 years ago. Back then he invited me to his house and we jammed in his basement, Pete on percussion. I looked around and there was an old Marshall 4×12 cab with ‘Cream’ stencilled on the back! He introduced me to Dick Heckstall-Smith who popped over for a visit and I realised I was so fortunate to be in the presence of such company.

So, a few days later, after a couple of van problems (a new clutch fitted and some electrical problem that left me stranded in the middle of Shropshire the other night, and now I have to get up in six hours from now to take the van to my mechanic), this week has been pretty full- on, especially seeing as I just finished mixing my next album tonight, just before I went to Graham Bonnet’s gig in Stourbridge, just up the road from me here in Worcestershire, England.

It’s definitely not a typical week, but this one has been a beaut

*great info, thank you. I watched the San Jose ‘Satisfaction’ clip -
the utube sound was awful, but Mick Taylor’s (small part/ solo’s) came through
Frankly Jagger dancing around that lip, and the angst of (me) missing a show so close overshadowed watching it.
Wonder if there will be any official RS audio releases with Mick Taylor guest performances thumbs up. (I prefer quality audio only lol)

Yes, apart from the Hyde Park show. I guess I was thinking of a mix/ highlight of various songs Taylor guested on, but that’s not going to give us more than
CYHMK, MR, Satisfaction,
that’s it? 3 tunes?
Hmm. Better get Taylor on some for 2018 to flesh my idea...
(Ha Ha right now I’m dreaming ‘Plundered’ ‘Moonlight Mile’ ‘Times Waits No-one’
‘Winter’ ‘Tops’)
Never mind.

He also played on Sway at the L.A. Staples Center II, May 20th show (and maybe elsewhere?) which I was blessed to experience, so that would be four tunes - reason enough to release a highlight video!
He pretty much commanded every tune he played on throughout that tour (except for some of the acoustic versions of Satisfaction of course) - Sway, CYHMK, and Midnight Rambler were always something to behold.
And because of his expertise and virtuosity, maybe that's why he was only limited to those tunes and not invited back - he basically stole all the limelight and ultimately was the main highlight of the shows imo.
Thank my lucky stars to experience a few shows that tour, but at the same time it spoiled me knowing how good they really could be. Everything after has been so-so, and it put all the previous shows I had seen in a different light.

I get it Hairball (I think) but truthfully,
watching Jagger on that SJ ‘Satisfaction’,
my eyes were locked in
until Taylor’s solo part (and the camera was off Jagger)
Ha Ha Ha (serious)
‘Sway’ ooohhhh
good job Ronnie held it up mighty fine ‘Fonda Sticky Fingers 2015’ recorded for our pleasure professionally
and I personally had BEAUTIFUL 13th row front of Ronnie SD Zip 2015
‘CYHMK’ ‘Moonlight’

Perhaps, *gasp
If they brought back Taylor for the rare masterpiece that Ronnie never plays
‘TWFNO’ ‘Plundered’
A Taylor two-fer.

(ETA, if they did that, I admit, part of me would giggle at Hairball scrambling to pay scalper priced ticket he he he)

Not really a fan of the Plundered, though TWFNO would be a huge treat...but paying scalper priced tickets to see it?
No way, I would wait until the day of show and get in below face value. winking smiley

Yes very nice and warm beautiful weather after the deluge of rain last week - no real winter down here, and Spring has arrived!

No I wasn't at San Jose - I went to Vegas (flew in directly from Hawaii which was the reason for missing L.A. I), both Anaheim shows, and the ultimate grand finale Staples II show.
The blondes you refer to I'm not sure, but they might have been special guests of 'the Jag' himself. winking smiley

he also played 'very rarely and understatedly on 'Streets of love' and 'slippin away' what he brought to both elevated them from what was there before, albeit in these songs he played within himself and played 'for the songs' as 'part of a band' which for me added something i wasnt expecting and really enjoyed. sensitive and understated.

what a shame the band didnt want it enough

Thank you for that great list. I don't think he ever played Satisfaction with an electric on the 14 on Fire tour. He did play an acoustic that you could not hear. Just like Blondie when he last toured with them

In fact when it was made evident that Taylor wouldn't be part of the Zip Code tour, they and most everyone I know decided to pass.
Add in the fact that the only show in the area was in San Diego, along with the outrageous prices, no Taylor sealed the deal.
I think you're underestimating the senses of many/most people who saw the tour, and/or the impact Taylor had on all of the shows.

I have seen MT play in the Rolling Stones in 1969,1972 and 2013 in Philadelphia. A lot of younger fans have never had that experience. I cannot explain how great the music was. They were hot and I don't think any other band could come close. The boot Philadelphia Special is incredible so is Brussels.

As much as I would like to see him back in the band for a few songs it will never happen. I think he may not even be interested in rejoining or guesting. It's unfortunate that such a great talent went unsung except for some old fans like us. Whatever reasons he had for leaving are his. I hope he is healthy and happy and maybe make a little more music!

I was at Hyde Park 2013. MT gave an enormous boost to the guitar sound even though he just played on 2-3 songs (MR was fantastic). Why the few numbers / why he didn't continue !!! To me - it was a pity. To me the guitar sound / playing is not as good as it could have been with the 3'rd guitar filling in with the current missing guitar ability (no criticism - everybody gets older and less able to play - SFTD is a good example).

To me, it's not anything to do with Keith and Ronnie's abilities or limitations. They have the their parts down pat. Taylor added the extra element that wasn't part of the arrangements Jagger put down with Jimmy Rip in 1988 that have been used as the blueprint for live Stones ever since. Taylor's solos are spontaneous and don't fit the show they've created and shaped over the last three decades. I realize that means having Taylor join in for the whole show would be impossible under those strictures, but it made for some exciting moments when he was given freedom to play. I'm sure it was a challenge for lighting and video and put extra pressure on Chuck in particular and, to an extent, every other musician on stage since the length of Taylor's solos could not be predicted. He simply played freely. Only Keith can get away with that and even then often elicits dirty looks from Mick. As it was, Mick, Keith, and Ronnie seemed to frequently exchange amused glances when Taylor took flight.

I interpret those glances between the other band members as signs of appreciation, amazement, and awe - like they had one of their brothers on stage doing the things he does best, and they were cheering him on.

That goes for some of my friends as well. I know several people that passed even when Taylor played with them because he basicly only played on one song.
Had he played on like four songs it would have made a difference. Taylor helped the Stones sound more dangerous/unpredictable/authentic. Some people happends to like his approach.smoking smiley

Your comment pretty much sums up the attitude in my small group of long time fans. There was little enthusiasm to go see the band on the Zip Code tour. There was always something better or more important to do, lol. But if Mick Taylor had been invited back...you can bet there would have been more than one road trip.

<Taylor helped the Stones sound more dangerous/unpredictable/authentic. Some people happends to like his approach>

How? I'd say he helped them sound more professional and melodic. Brian made it authentic and Ronnie and Keith were the masterminds behind making it sound unpredictable. The danger was there all the way up till 1982.

All were good ingredients, though smiling smiley

I thought S.T.P. meant The Stones 2012-2014, that is, his approach was different in regards to The Stones of the modern times, which made the difference (the point also Rocky Dijon made in his post). That's something I also agree on. Historically speaking, I also would say that it was the professionalism and melodism (musicality) that he brought on the table during his 'real' time with the band - at the time when about all they did was, to use S.T.P.'s apt words, "dangerous/unpredictable/authentic" simply by nature. So the little cameo of Taylor in 2012-2014 was like a little reminder of their old selves... A skeptic might say, Taylor never grew up to understand the demands of show business professionalism of today's world...grinning smiley

I don't disagree with that, although the call and respond-thing became a schtik after a while on MR.

But then again, one cannot expect one to re-invent the whole guitar playing in every note one plays every time... Even if one is Jimi Hendrix or Mick Taylor...

That sort of criticism could be directed also towards Taylor's doings in the 'glory days'. Especially if one listens his solos during European Tour 1973, it is following, no matter how great those generally are, some typical patterns and ideas from gig to gig, which probably wouldn't sound very 'unpredictable' in the long run.

Yep, that was the initial point I tried to make. I don't think things became "unpredictable" in the glory days. Instead it became increasingly professional and the roles were more fixed.
