But who do we trust the most - Millard or the Stones?

Millard of course! He was as obessive as a taper/collector can be.

I don't doubt this, but after recording as series of shows in a row it's not impossible that even Millard made a tape labeling mistake while I believe the recording studio labelled the original multitrack concert recordings "on the spot", at least that's what recording engineers usually do.

It’s a shame but Mick makes a lot of the show recorded on video unlistenable. I think it’s the worst performance from him I’ve ever seen.

Yeah it's quite puzzling to see that after watching a rough edit of the July 11 vid Jagger didn't think : "jeez this is crap. We need to bring back the video crew to film the last two L.A. shows!"
Can I respectfully ask what it is about Mick Jagger's performance is "crap" ?

It is possible to find the 3LP at a price that is not too expensive or new and if they are going to reedit it in the future

thrilled this thread has come back up...had this playing in the car all weekend...no doubt one of my favorite recordings ever...from Keith's sleezy guitar riffs to Micks crazy performance, to the funk of B Preston...to yes the amazing guitar work from Ronnie Wood...hands down incredible....to the critics.....screw off...this is vintage Stones and why we love them as a band....great stuff.

Jesse Ed Davis on L.A. Friday
Date: October 19, 2018 01:49

It was listed that Jesse Ed Davis played on Sympathy For The Devil in this version. I can't hear him playing guitar so i'm not sure if he truly is there or not. I've seen it mentioned on another thread and it's also written in an article that he was in the horn section for that performance which i'm also not sure is true. If anyone can give any info or show some pics of him onstage with them then it'd be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Credits to mathijs for discovering this : JED is clearly audible at the end of SFTD.

RE the Wenner article :
"On the opening in L.A. they were disappointing (...) But interesting things happened on Friday night in L.A.".
That quote really proves Wenner was a sycophant and an ignorant : the opening L.A. show was great and the "interesting things happened on Friday night [July 11]" were that the Stones played their worst L.A. show and possibly the worst show of the tour...

And the jewel of the crown : "Three more horn players (Jesse Ed Davis, Bobby Keys, Steve Madeo [sic]) emerged for this last part of the show"

Good job Jann! thumbs down
