regarding the "19 songs" axiom. I think that "they" decided already month ago that 19 songs is the most they can confidently do with success night after night. In cases they feel conformable and in shape (most shows in the passing month) they extend some songs either with longer jams (MR) or just by adding a minute or so of extended "end of song" (JJF, GS, Satisfaction, TD). The pattern is obvious. I think that we should not expect that (relatively) occasional jumping into cold water we say, here and there, a year ago in North America with the MT playing in additional songs etc. etc.

Why do you think that is? I would think confidence would grow with each passing show, not recede. Part of me has thought for years they simply adapt the show to what they know they can get away with to satisfy each audience.

I think the same. The type of "magical RS moment's" some of us spot during these occasional moments, might not look so magical to the band's decision makers. The MT, specifically, contribution is just like the "rarities" in the setlist debate - something people cannot always agree upon. I had an argument about a MR live in a show I attended this tour with someone else being at the same concert:

moi - a RS fan but not much of a specialist with music. I do not play an instrument (except for drums, for the fun). I do not sit and listen to a large variety of musicians in clubs and workshops.

Her - a person with a wide theoretical and practical experience of music. Not a RS fan - saw them for the first time. Knows the studio works and heard - here and there - some live clips. Knows that Taylor is a gifted guitar player that was there at the Golden age but definitely unfamiliar with the whole "Taylorian's vs. others" debate.

I thought the MR in that specific show was irritating and sloppy (it was the 3rd our of 4 MR's I've seen live and followed in detail since 2013). Felt that during the show - re confirmed this feeling watching YT after the show. I recall thinking to myself "unless I knew Taylor can deliver better I might have regarded this MR spot in the show as a "happy family photo opportunity". You know... like letting Bill Wyman play in one song per gig and making it You Got The Silver...

SHE said that while the show was solid - Taylor's contribution made her feel as if for the first time in the show a "responsible adult" took control on all of 'em kids playing (sounds better in my native tongue).

For that show specifically my thought was that when those "specials" do not work well - they are not worth the slot of time. Now I prefer to see an irritating MR WITH Taylor, than a solid MR without him. But thats an emotional thing. Maybe decision maker's are not so emotional? Look at the Wyman fiasco in Nov. 26/29 (the backstage issue) - does it sounds as if they make an effort towards "being special"?

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that I have never ever had so much space in the FOS, and you could easily walk from Ronnies side to Keith's side. I was back in the FOS at Keith's side and had really plenty of space, unbelievable.

And when Jagger hit the catwalk, you could easily come near, no pushing or cursing, everybody just let you pass.

Much less fanatic then, lets say, 10 or 15 years ago.

This shrinking set list in Europe has been going on for DECADES.

In 1982 "Let it Bleed" AND "Chantilly Lace" were dropped after the last show in June and REPLACED WITH NOTHING until four or five concerts later - well into July when "Angie" appeared.

So,that is a 2 for 0 trade-off which eventually turned into a 2 for 1 trade-off.

Mind you,the June 1982 set lists were ALREADY shorter than the 1981 U.S. set lists. 1982 had no "Waiting On a Friend" which was a staple of the 1981 tour. Also there was no "All Down the Line" , "Star Star" , "Down the Road Apiece" etc. on the 1982 European Tour as there was for the '81 American Tour.

1990 Europe ...... "Bitch" is dropped after the first 8 concerts and replaced by ......... NOTHING. I could go on but, this holds true for EVERY tour of Europe since at least 1976.

So,they never cared before about having a uniform # of songs for each show of a leg of a tour and the shows always shrink no matter how young they were.

Not the best show....

Extremely lame crowd. Never seen anything like it. Sound was really soft. Also guitars very low in the mix. Sometimes just sounded like Charlie, Daryll and Mick with an occasional Keith or Ronnie lick/riff.

Jagger tried hard but could not get the audience in extase like normal. Keith was just not on his top form.

Rain was not to bad, traffic (first time I was in a huge walking traffic jam) was.

Luckely I saw them at Pinkpop where the band, audience and sound was just superb.

The fact (in his words at least) he was summoned for a "special celebration", hardly had any chance to rehearse and was given a spot in 2 songs - ALL OF THIS without really preparing him for that. I guess Bill is not the easiest person around, but his description left me with the feeling the whole thing was not thought about as for "being special for the fan's who love us for so long".

Thats what I exactly am thinking the last couple of years, and which is, I think, pretty much true.

It's not nice to say, but that's how I look at the band since the last 10 years. Before that, Ronnie was even more more fooling and joking around, than playing the guitar.

At least he and keith are more concentrated these days, but there's still a lot of posing and rock-behavior.

the most talented player at this moment, is Taylor, imho.

But the crowd was indeed a bit lame, like everybody is getting a bit tired of it. Don't hope so...Maybe it's because a festival like yesterday opens up at 12.00, and the Stones come 10 hours later. Normally a stadium opens at about 5 or 6, and the Stones are there 4 or 5 hours later, quite a difference !

Sad to hear that the sound was bad. There is ZERO excuse for bad sound at an open air gig, unless you are surrounded by large concrete walls in a city center. Somehow the Stones sound team manages to do it though.

I have experienced it enough that it is a worry when I buy tix. Will Keith me playing his best and will the set be all warhorses, is enough of a worry. The sound guys should not be a worry in 2014.

I've had no complaints from the sound at all! In fact it was great. Maybe slightly muddier than say Pinkpop but good sound. I would say the sound in generall this tour is excellent (it seems also the case in the USA, although I was't there) I could hear every instrument. Drums and Bass and Guitars sounding great. Jaggers vocals were less upfront than my previous concerts in 2014. But slightly.

Just back off the Eurostar - there will be a report from one of the rubes at the back when I've had a cup of tea. Agree with some comments (lame crowd) and not others (HATED Trigger finger) - but I had a great time. See you later. Where's that teapot...

2 issues with the sound.

It was clear, but not loud enough. You could talk to each other in GC, without raising your voice.
During the tour guitars are turned way up during some parts, like in Sympathy or JJF. They didn't do that yesterday.

Very irritating was if you were standing next to the catwalk, somewhere in the middle. You could hear the monitors, which was very annoying.

Ah, men and women of constant sorrow.
I take it it was a long day with lots of loud music and the weather quite miserable & rainy.
I wouldn't expect a crowd with soggy bottoms to go nutz allthrough the whole set.
they were probably just a bit worn out, no?

A different show in Werchter. Mick saved his voice, and the crowd was very different from the prevous shows. But "It's All Over Now" worked great with Keith doing the guitar solo. Reports and pictures here:
