Rolling Stones Live - might it be all over now ?
Posted by: paulywaul ()
Date: September 25, 2013 11:44

They celebrated the 50th with some shows in late 2012 and mid 2013

They did Glastonbury, they did Hyde Park, & the sun shone throughout

General consensus is that they were playing better than they have done in years

A good note on which to go out on perhaps ? Or still more to come ?

Keef was crying when he left the stage at Hyde Park 2. Might this have been the last time, I do not know hopefully not!

The reason I opened up the discussion was simply because like a lot of people on this board I guess, I'd love to see them again somewhere sometime. But - the thought did occur that from their point of view, given the resounding success of those 2012/2013 shows, if they were to be thinking along the likes of "wouldn't it be nice to go out on a high" (so to say), then maybe now would be as good a time as any to hang it up ?

Personally I hope they're not thinking like that and that the thought doesn't or hasn't crossed their minds, but it would probably be silly to think that it's not a possibility.

I for one absolutely ain't thinkin' about it, but if one day in the spring of 2014 there's an RS tweet announcing forthcoming shows, then it'll be hot smiley hot smiley hot smiley

But if not, and if Hyde Park 2 turns out "to have been it", then f**k it, at least I was THERE !! So either way, more hot smiley hot smiley hot smiley

'should it be all over now' seems to be the gist of the question.

I'm at a stage now where I'm ambivalent whether they tour anymore. Would I like to see more shows? Yes. Would I be crushed if they didnt play any more? Not really. A decade or so ago I maybe would have been more annoyed about it but maybe with age there's an increasing acceptance that these things do have a sell by date.

I do think there'll be shows next year and beyond - that'll be the case as long as they're physically capable of performing to a level that they feel is acceptable.

Going out on a high would be quite unusual and very honourable. I've never bought into this obsession some people have of wanting them to play until theyre REALLY old based solely on the logic that the likes of Chuck Berry and various old blues singers have done it. Regardless of how they started out, the Stones are no longer comparable to those people at all. Its a different form of entertainment and I'd personally hate to see them get to the stage where people's final memory of any of them on a concert stage was one of someone who was a drooling, incompetent wreck incapable of playing a song properly the whole way through.

Thankfully it hasnt come to that stage yet - but its important that it never does.

Aside from personal feelings, any decisions like that are for them. Not us. Ours is simply whether we feel we want to be part of it anymore. To be honest, I'm more concerned with how some fans would cope with it more than anything because for a lot of people in the Stones fan community it does seem to be the emotional centre of their universe. Part of accepting the inevitable (for me anyway) has been to try and gradually become less emotionally attached in recent years.

Absolutely right! The.."and Counting"...leaves the door wide open! They could have billed it the Rolling Stones Farewell Tour and they didn't. They'll be back!smiling smiley

I'm also very confortable about the Stones future, whatever they do I'm really OK with....If they play I'll come for sure, if they don't I'll just keep on with my life, their music still gives me goosebumps, so I'm more than grateful.

I think you can safely assume they are talking years.

With flex pricing, for some people the shows last spring were more like 50 and discounting...

It's funny because what Gazza expresses is how I was feeling since 2007. "I don't really mind if they don't tour anymore, but if they do something, I want to be part of it". I know other french fans felt the same, as there was a sadness at some 2007 shows that we didnt want to experiment again.

The first thing most visitors in Bondy last year said (after "holly $H1t they are really here") was "Keith's playing is much better". We were all relieved, really.

I think they should quit while they are at the top of the mountain.
