I don't know about that. From what I've seen of the '78 tour, Keith was in full control of his faculties, as was Ron (in contrast to '81). I realize that it was "perceived as being full of problems" but the recent '78 Live in Texas has probably changed that perception. Hell, I've got the Hampton Blu-ray and LP on order because the samples sound so good. It may well change my perception of that '81 tour.
It will never be this good again, folks (or maybe it will). Two freaking archive releases within a month and the Stones are on tour.

Almost unfathomable the amount of content we've gotten in the last 5 years.

Watching the blu-ray now. Makes me sad a little. This was really the last gasp of the Stones near the top of Mount Rock. Some of the differences that really jump out at me. Huge for me, this was the last tour (counting '82 in Europe as same tour) that Keith did the backup vocals. I miss that a lot. Minimal extra musicians. Still actually sounds raw. The energy level is so much higher. Finally, they had a bunch of good newish (3 years old or newer) material. Sure you get some warhorses but they don't dominate the set. They definitely aren't coasting on past glories. Just my opinion.

Received mine yesterday, and I've watched it twice now, and its great.
It's amazing that I have come on here to find that you put my feelings exactly in to words!

I always looked at the '81 Tour as a triumph for the group, even more so than the Steel Wheels Tour. The '78 Tour, and people forget this, was perceived as being full of problems and the possible end of the group. Keith had a greenish hue and looked liked a junkie going cold turkey. (Because he was). By '81 he was recovered enough to really bear down on his guitar playing. He was more refreshed and on fire than he had been in at least ten years.
Also the '78 Tour was very limited date wise. 14 concerts? I'd have to look it up. The '81 Tour was a full blown circus compared to '78. They pulled a little deeper from their past with cuts like Time Is On My Side. The band would never be better. (Bill seems to have checked out by '89.) And of course it would lead to their successful Euro '82 Tour, a market they hadn't played in six years.
