Erm, seems there's some kind of jam with FF and Mick going down at Rockefeller center right now per Questlove's Twitter feed. For you New Yorkers still awake.

My humble thoughts...

Mick is one of the coolest cats on the planet, and he proved it once again last night. Damn, this guy is so smooth and talented and hasn't lost a thing.
Talk about growing old gracefully.

The music was fantastic. I do think some serious thought went into the song choices to rattle the cages of the Stones' fans. Brilliant play.

While I enjoyed the shit out of this show, I am still a little sad...

Growing old is a bitch.
"Mick Jagger" does seem much more relevant today than "The Rolling Stones."

thumbs up otoh :

Keith is impotent
Charlie's dying to play in jazz clubs for the rest of his life
Ron will play with anyone and have fun
Darryl is expandable

Imho it's a winner! TLTime is very good (ha this a capella intro thumbs up ) and the two songs with the FFighters are also very nice.

So Mick sends us this message : he's still got at least 5 years ahead of him as a world-class performer. thumbs up

But with whom to back him...? >grinning smiley< The Stones? Other, younger, ppl?

Thanks for the link! Great show, Jagger rules. I don't like AF and the FF, but give them good songs and a great front man and they deliver, too! Very refreshing to hear those songs without Chuck Leavell/Daryl Jones/Blondie Chaplin/Lisa Fisher/Bernard Fowler/horn section!

the show had its funny moments....the music performances were fun too..but I remain feeling some agitation, befuddlement, bemusement, bewilderment, chagrin, discomfiting, dumbfounding, perplexing, puzzlement, stew, stirring up, tangling, tumult, turbulence, turmoil, unsettling, upsetting feelings about wh Jagger would sing 3 Rolling Stones songs with other bands when he had the Rolling Stones as an option. I don't see it so much as a Mick project as I do a FU to Keith. Well now it's over...lets see what you really got.

vegas stones = cover band

Different strokes for different folks.
When the drummer is ahead of the beat and pushing, not pulling it back, the song loses it's charm.
I agree with whoever it was who said he hates it when cover bands do this song.
Without a rockin' piano and Charlie's swing, it may still be rock n roll, but I don't like it.

Joining all these threads together was silly. thumbs down

Now it's totally disjointed and makes no sense what so ever. We have comments about the show appearing before a load of comments where people speculate about what will be on the show. eye rolling smiley

First, because we are positive people, let us first look at all the positives...

But secondly, y'all better hope that my rosy festival scenario is correct,
and that Mick and Keith have worked it all through already, and that all
the strange things about this SNL show are just to heighten the drama, and
are not reflective of an ongoing dispute between Mick and Keith about who the
Stones are or should be at this point. Mick's position I think is clear, "Yeah,
I'll do it one more time, Keith, but you can go hard or you can go home."
I really believe, or at least really want to believe, that Keith has already
acceded to this demand, and toughened himself up, and is ready to RAWK for
the youngsters. Because otherwise...

Anyway, let's not think about that. Let us think only happy thoughts:

1) As anticipated, it was an all-Stones Big Hits show (except for the one new
one), this thus constituting both a pre-announcement of the impending Stones
tour, and a pre-announcement that the tour will be mostly a Big Hits one.

2) As anticipated, Arcade Fire performed The Last Time, this thus constituting
a pre-announcement that the tour will be advertised as a "farewell" tour.

3) As anticipated, Mick performed at the end of the show outside on Rockefeller
Plaza. More Stones hits. Thus re-confirming the outdoor festivals/hits
pre-announcement.

4) As previously discussed, Mick yet again reinforced his teacher/student
relationship with me and y'all in the closing graduation skit with Kristen
Wiig. As I have pointed out, SOMEBODY has to be the validictorian. Kristen at
comedy school. Me at the institute of jaggerist studies.

5) As previously discussed, I was really wishing for a comedy bit that made
fun of internet Stones geeks, and me in particular. Wish granted! C'mon, who's
a bigger Jagger geek than me, or more shy? And to have Mick playing me...
What an honor!

6) A new song! That PREDICTS! That validates prediction itself as a valid
art form! Further, that validates my analysis that Mick thinks it doesn't matter
who you elect, its all bullshit!

I still can't stand Jeff Beck's playing. I thinks it's all about showing off his playing abilities and not about supporting the song. And I hate this mid range atteck-less guitar tone he has.

Foo Fighters and Arcade Fire were very good. The Foos seem to have a lot of fun playing Stones songs

I like Jeff's playing, but last night he was just making noises.

I think Jagger served notice to the Stones and the rest of the world that there is a way he could honor the Stones next year without the band if that's what it comes to.

Personally, it kinda felt like he was just as half-baked a Stones cover band with these groups as with the actual Stones.

Sad.

"Tea Party" (Mick Jagger)

If you wanna sleep in the West Wing
You gotta strategize a bit
You wanna sleep in the West Wing
You wanna keep that private bowling alley
You gotta strategize
You're gonna have to raise about 100 million dollars
or you're going to end up so deep down in the shit

Mr Romney he's a mensch, but he always plays it straight and fair
Mr Romney he's a hard working man and he always says his prayers
But there's one little thing about him, don't ever let him cut your hair

Who'll be the president come November, well it's anbody's guess
who'll be sitting in that Oval Office, who can say I must confess
I bet you in six months, he'll be screaming,
"Honey, won't you let me outta this mess"

Uh, might wanna check your LP credits. tonite's version was the first in decades that had a real 'breakdown' section like the record, and uh, Charlie's not on the studiio recording!!

I second this. It's the next morning already. there has to be a blow-by-blow account of all that was played on the outdoor stage last night!! Who played? What songs, etc.? Very intriguing...

I hate when artists play hit songs and use a different band if Mick was gonna sing Stones songs it should have been the Rolling Stones playing on SNL. Not the Foo Fighters .

Why are so many people pissed off at Mick because he can still do it and Keith can't? Obviously Keith is too ill to perform because his massive insecurity/big ego would never let Mick get the best of him. But Mick rocked it. Keith may as well go to the manor i.e. nursing home. The Stones are done. Open the vaults.

took a quick websurf and found out that the Foos played on the outdoor stage; a set with "Stay with Me". Then Jagger and Don Was joined them for Miss You and Bitch. Then the Foos kept playing. Not sure if there's more that happened, but I doubt there was any more Mick stuff. He'd been doing skits, monologues, singing, etc for over 2 hours at that point.

What a whirlwind night, and some great publicity for the Stones' music! 10 RS songs referenced or played, a one-off blues jam with Jeff Beck, 5-6 combos of people playing the stuff, and Mick performing a whole night without the over-spastic moves/persona of most of his post-1989 Vegas-era appearances; a bit more 'analogue'/human if you will, more akin to his classic self. Great set-up for any future RS activity as we head into summer...
