Lagavulin is very special - one of the three Islays on the Southeast coastline (situated a mile apart)....not as popular as either Ardbeg or Laphroaig, but every bit their equal for the peat-nik. And their 16 is basically the ONLY product they make in terms of single malt, unlike the others.

Peat lovers are highly encouraged to a take a few days on Islay if you're ever in the area - it's known as the Whisky Island and it's paradise for lovers of this type of malt.

Have not yet had the opportunity to try Knob Creek bourbon. Is it really better than Makers or Bulleit? Love both of those and usually a little more affordable than Creek.

Jefferson's bourbon is pretty hard to beat. A favorite single-malt is Glenmorangie with the port or sherry cask finish.

Since it's Saint Patrick's Day; why not Jameson? A very smooth and sweet Irish whiskey. As it is or in Irish Coffee. I'm sure everyone has tasted it...

interesting tidbit - the only two single malt international championships were won by:

japanese distillers

"Best European Single Cask" (score of 95,5% in 'The Whisky Bible'; 2010)
"European Single Cask Whisky of the Year"(2011)

Check it out: [here]

Why do they call it ovaltine anyway? The jar's round, the mug's round, why don't they call it roundtine?

Guess that meanwhile the price of a Stones ticket will buy you a couple of bottles of Scotch.

Maybe the worst part of this story isnt that bars were mixing rubbing alcohol with caramel food coloring and served it as scotch.... maybe the the worst part of the story is the customers didnt seem to notice!! It took a year long undercover operation to figure it out?? WTF?

Who the heck was paying for and drinking this stuff? Have they no tastebuds?

Rubbing alcohol as scotch? N.J. officials release details of 'Operation Swill

TRENTON — In one case, a New Jersey bar allegedly mixed rubbing alcohol with caramel food coloring and served it as scotch.

In another, a bar is accused of pouring dirty water into an empty bottle and passing it off as liquor.

Those are some of the details state officials released today after a year-long investigation called "Operation Swill," which culminated Wednesday when more than 100 investigators raided 29 bars and restaurants across New Jersey on the suspicion they had been serving cheap alcohol disguised as premium brands.

"What these 29 establishments have allegedly done threatens the integrity of the alcoholic beverage industry as a whole," state Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa said at a news conference today in Trenton. "This alleged scheme is a dishonest ruse to increase profits, and it is a slap in the face of the consumer....... more

Ah... I wondered, not to get cross wised with good IORRers from NJ or anything.

Man I tell ya, there have been acouple of instances in my life when I/we suspected the bar of not using what we were paying for (typically a low quality booze in place of top shelf) and we called them out on it.

We turned the drinks in and got bottled beer in place of it. Not being an expert it is kind of tough to accuse a bartender and getting too uppity about it, so we were nice and they happily (almost too happpily) took the drinks back..... later (weeks) the problem was not there. The booze was fine.

And that was just mixed cocktails... not straight Scotch. I dont want to sound too mean/ or cocky, but if someone orders straight Scotch, or on the rocks, and it is actually rubbing alcohol, with food coloring, and the people cant tell??... well, do you really feel sorry for them?

This is a WHOLE THREAD, hundred of posts about people being picky about Scotch... and I bet most of the people who posted here could tell shit from shineola... But the customers in the article were drinking rubbing alcohol, and couldnt tell? How sorry can one feel for them?
