This discussion is making me thirsty...Have you had a good Cuban cigar with a glass of single malt? Add conversation with a good friend and you have one of life's greatest simple pleasures.

Jameson - the 'other' Celtic whiskey.

from a value-prop it's right up there. fine straight, on the rocks or as a mixer, too. and some of the other jameson products: paddy, power's and of course MIDLETON! - all very smooth whiskeys and highly recommended.

Excellent! I can tell my wife I'm not cheap...just 'value conscious'!

Well, I suppose you could slap a fleur-de-lis on a turd, and it would still be a turd. grinning smiley

I see there are lots of guys who enjoy their whiskey here. How do you drink yours? Straight, with ice or you had something to it? That Talisker is so good I drink it straight. What is a good glass to drink a whiskey? I'm asking because I got the feeling that we have some whiskey connaisseurs on IRRO.

Taxes on hard liquor is skyhigh in Sweden. A good single malt starts around 40 Euro.

Bells is good, but you can't get it here in the States. Wild Turkey is a new love. Rebel Yell is a standby. And Crown Royal with club soda and lemon hits the spot.

Prefers single malts but I must admit that I have a sweet tooth for Jameson too. Jameson was the main ingredient in Irish Coffee; a coffee drink that was very popular years ago.

Mmmmm... At the moment I have over 70 different single malts, so picking a favourite is impossible. I have to avoid the peaty malts since anything over 3 ppm tastes like liniment to me.

Glenmorangie Original is what I usually use to cook with, and I have recipes from salad to dessert that use whiskies (whisky pate is killer!). Aberlour 10 yr old is a good every-day whisky, at a great price. Some of my recent favourites are a 15 yr old Rum Cask Ben Riach, a Murray-McDavid bottling of 16 yr old Glendronach in Bourbon and Port casks, a Signatory bottling of Dallas Dhu that I am hoarding, a port-cask Tullibardine, a cask-strength Rosebank, an interesting 8 yr old Poit Dhubh from Skye, and two amazing malts from Bruichladdich - their recent 19 yr old Black Art, and an independent bottling from Queen of the Moorlands.

I think I better get behind a glass or two...

Yowzah! Where do you collect them? It's been a challenge here since the liquor stores in Ontario are government run, and bring in a lousy selection...

Long story as short as possible:

Me as a 5 or 6 year old with friends looking at Playboy magazines in the "carriage room" of our apartment building. We were busted by mom's friend. Mom's friend ratted us out.

My mom said to me..."never sneak around, your father has them if you want to see them just ask." She figured that was the last of it.

Come home from school the next day and asked mom for my dad's Playboy mags. She gave them to me and asked if I would like a shot of whiskey while looking at them?

I said yes. She suggested to drink it all in one shot, so I downed the shot and ran like hell to the kitchen and drank about 5 quarts of water. lol

I rarely drink whiskey to this day. Just Guinness and Vodka.

Lovely, I like Crown with lemon on the rocks, hold the soda!

I love Jack Daniels with coke, and I'll drink bourbon neat/with ice.

I'll gladly sip Woodford Reserve with lots of ice. A really nice drink.

I was in the U.S. a few weeks ago, and I was offered 'Bookers' Bourbon. It was a little more expensive, but really good. Very strong though, the bar tender let me have a look at the bottle and I was pretty shocked to see it is well over 60% ABV.

But being from London, England, and loving Bourbon, there aren't that many choices, so visiting the U.S./Canada is great for me, plenty of choice.

Makers Mark is always good, but the woodford is nicer...

To answer your question Rollmops, the correct glass to use for whiskey is a flute with narrow neck belling out at the top. This allows the aroma to go more direct to the nose which in turn of course hilights the palate.Enjoy.

How to drink single malt? with a tiny amount of water to bring out the flavour, as Oscar Wilde once said use an eyedropper smiling smiley
