OT - Mississppi Delta Abomination Oil Spill
Posted by: Beelyboy ()

this PLEASE not to degrade this to fites and politix cause it's a hot button issue; just statin' fact not theory or blame.
JUST NOW...this spill is reaching Louisiana shoreline. It directly endangers Huge series of ecosystems in the Delta area that blues and our musics derive from (for the most part)....

it's a serious national tragedy that endangers critical bird and sea mammal populations and territories exactly during migratory and mating arrivals for all kinds of species...

this is a national emergency and an international tragedy and it's going on in the heartland of our musics...right now!!!

even in the wake of Katrina...and if BV dosen't mind, i think it may bear the weight of a somewhat distantly related IORR thread..

Well I can certainly smell it where I live. Abomination indeed. I'm utterly totally and whatever else pissed off about this. And to think that BP is a "green" company. Bullshit. This whole foreign oil thing is bullshit anyway. Just suck it up and let that be. It's dumping out 5000 barrels a day right now just leaking. Certainly some company could hook a dredge up to it and at least pump it into ships and deal with it that way. Granted, it's five thousand feet deep but come on.

But obviously, due to a lack of catastrophic failures of this stature, they do not know what to do AT ALL. The locals are doing what they can - the ones who are actually able to. Other things are getting involved. But this entire area is on the verge of total destruction for wild life, the wetlands and all the people that rely on all of it to make their living. It's going to effect (or is it affect?) the entire country. It's setting things back over 100 years in terms of all the healing that has been going on because of the oil industry to begin with!

This is gonna screw up everything - more than people realise. It is a catastrophe. It makes a hurricane of catastrophic proportions seem rather inviting.

Tonight on the French TV we had a "whole" broadcast about it .

They say -if I translate well - that Mr Obama administration is /are going to visit the area to determine how the federal government will respond to the potential environmental disaster.
The massive oil slick is targeting the Mississippi and Louisiana coasts.

That's what they said on the French TV.

I am a Frenchie ,as Mick affectionately called them in the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 .

Hey Skipstone -

This oil spill may eventually reach the shores of west Florida. Totally disgusting. Also, mammals are at risk -Dolphins, Sharks, etc...

This is indeed a catastrophe in the making but you are stretching to make this music related.

Yeah, no kidding.

The Governor of Louisiana has already put the "price gouging" rule in effect.

>> the Delta area that blues and our musics derive from (for the most part) <<

the Mississipi Delta of blues fame isn't the Mississippi River Delta -
it's an area in the mid-to-north western part of Mississipi (the state),
between the Mississippi and Yazoo rivers, and it isn't actually a delta at all.
it floods a lot so it has rich soil like a river delta.

Louisiana of course has rich and beautiful musical traditions ...
and what's going on is a catastrophe in the making regardless of any musical connections

>> It does say OT. The @#$%& more do you want? <<

... if that's addressed to me: i don't have any objection to the thread, and i'm very sorry for the whole area facing this.
i'm merely noting that the Mississippi Delta and the Mississippi River Delta are two different areas.

I suppose I should mention that this disaster began Tuesday night, April 20, with a huge explosion on an oil rig.
Eleven men are missing and presumed dead, probably vaporized by the explosion.

My boss knows a survivor of the explosion, a foreman on the rig who had just returned to his sleeping quarters when the explosion happened.
He survived, but with two crushed legs, various other broken bones, second & third degree burns and hundreds of stitches holding his body together.

The human toll of this disaster goes way beyond shrimp gumbo & gas prices.

I'm very disappointed in you Skipstone...How can you let Chris Fountain get away with referring to a shark as a mammal? You're often quick to correct people for such transgressions.

No sssoul, it was not addressed to you. That would be to Chris Fountain. The Mississippi Delta does indeed include a big part of Louisiana to the Gulf and if you do some history research you'll see that it starts north of New Orleans et al as it is. If you look at a map of the Gulf Coast and draw a line, more or less straight west, you'll basically get an idea of where the actual continent stops (now) and where the goo of the delta, wetlands, marsh, swamp and bayous take over. New Orleans is founded on a barrier island but was shaped by the river of course. Where I live it's more the old Gulf Coast. On a clear day I can see the tallest buildings of New Orleans across the lake. But this whole area exists because of the Mississippi River.

It affects me. It affects people I know (and obviously people I don't know). Yet alone the wild life, which is always treated as fourth class and as a problem of blocking "progress". You see what "progress" has brought to this planet. If this was 9/11 would people be bitching about it's OTness? I'm sure they would, that is human nature. Nobody had a problem about the recent volcano thread as I recall. Some just need to grow up is all. Be a little more worldly perhaps. As in, don't click on it if one is not interested. Afterall, participating on this whole board is a choice, not a requirement. If someone has a problem with something that is OT when it says it's OT that's their problem.

I never said anything about OT. That would be Chris M. Skipstone this affects our entire Gulf region whereas I'm also a resident.

To be honest, I'm sick of being misquoted.

What's sad is BP was too cheap to install a safety capping system on the tubes. Now it's gonna take 2-3 months to stop the crude from pouring out = it's the Exxon Valdez disaster from 1989 (?) multiplied by 100.

PS : burning the oil (the easy way) will spread carcinogenic elements in the atmosphere.
Can it get more f@cked than this?

Chris Fountain - my apologies. At the time, I was a bit anxious and I zipped through the posts. I had it half right. And I was a bit pissed off. My bad.

Anyway, I found this, at of all places the BP website for the USA:

"If you are interested in volunteering, or know someone who is, please call the Deepwater Horizon Response Volunteer Request Line at 1-866-448-5816"

OK, one more time, just to clarify, that this, iorr.org and the posting here, is SUCH an ordeal for people to NOT read or post on certain threads - after all, I'm sure it has a huge effect on one's quality of life to participate:
