What a totally UNDESERVED victory of Uruguay!!! That hand ball prevented a 100% certain goal. Even a penalty should be superfluous. Injustice in sports in optima forma. A fine match, but an extremely unsatisfying end. I feel so sorry for Ghana and Africa.

Congrats Holland!!!
There's a good relation of catalan people and Barça fans with dutch.
A lot of dutch people spend their summer vacations in Catalonia and I have some summer friends.
On the other hand, Cruyff, Neeskens, Koeman, Kluivert,De Boer Bros, Hesp, Reiziger, Bogarde, Cocu, Zenden, Davids, Overmars, Van gaal.... a long list of players and coaches in Barça history.
Congrats Holland again!!!
As we, the catalans, can't play the World Cup, Holland is my team.
It's your time now in 2010 after finals in 1974 and 1978

Why the final between Holland and Spain, because in my modest opinion, best generation of players are hollanders and spaniards, best players are in the best clubs in Europe, just check those names out, young ones all of them.

Love Maradone, but lately is telling too much "mierda" from his mouth, talking bad about Spain, Fifa, etc... Totally overrated persona, actually as a team they don´t play to nothing, and tomorrow against Germany they will find a big ROCK ins his road, you´ll see...

Well done Holland, I hope they win the cup now to make up for 74 & 78.
Also well done Uruguay must have been tough to have to play the last African team .
Now that all the African teams are gone and also Brazil, perhaps the British media pundits will now give an objective view of the competition instead of fawning all over the aforementioned countries.

Yep, of course I do, I'm from Holland and have played myself on a pretty high level as well. Ghana was the better team during the extra time. And that hand ball was actualy a goal and you know it. Imagine this had happened to Uruguay. I think I could hear you screaming in Holand all the way from Uruguay in that case and I would have understood that. The ref did a good job. Remember that I was neutral from the beginning UNTIL that hand ball. But it's all in the game.

We'll see what happens in the semi finals. Let's hope for fair and exciting games! Can we say It's only football but I like it? Looking at the images from Brazil I doubt it. It's football and it's a matter of life and deathgrinning smiley.
Tomorrow Germany - Argentina and Paraguay - Spain. I'm looking forward to those matches. Difficult to predict Germ - Arg, though I guess Germany. Spain is absolutely favourite against Paraguay. The latter is the underdog.

Which penalty KICKS? It looked like the Ghanese wanted everything but score during the penalty series. My wife would have done it better. On high heels.

Why Soccer and not football...in the US.

Soccer, an English Term.

Clive Toye, an Englishman who moved to the U.S. and became known as the father of modern American soccer, bringing Brazilian legend Pele to play for the New York Cosmos, takes up the story.

“Soccer is a synonym for football,” said Toye, who helped launch the North American Soccer League in the late 1960s. “And it has been used as such for more years than I can count. When I was a kid in England and grabbed a ball to go out and play … I would just as easily have said: ‘Let’s have a game of soccer’ as I would use the word ‘football’ instead. And I didn’t start it.”

To trace the origin of “soccer” we must go all the way back to 1863, and a meeting of gentlemen at a London pub, who congregated with the purpose of standardizing the rules of “football,” which was in its infant years as an organized sport but was growing rapidly in popularity.

Those assembled became the founding members of the Football Association (which still oversees the game in England to this day). And they decided to call their code Association Football, to differentiate it from Rugby Football.

A quirk of British culture is the permanent need to familiarize names by shortening them. “My friend Brian Johnston was Johnners,” said Toye. “They took the third, fourth and fifth letters of Association and called it SOCcer. So there you are.”

So forget that English condescension and carry on calling it soccer, safe in the knowledge that you’re more in tune with the roots of the sport than those mocking Brits.
