Is it "insider" or "in cider"?
Seriously though, the "Protest music, million dollar fad" makes sense as a lyric more than "million dollar sad"!

It's "million dollar sad"...Again, the lyrics are impressionistic. They are snapshots. It is not a linear story. Attempts to over-analyze them will fail, as there is less there than meets the eye. These lyrics are brilliant word-pictures.

It's something between impressionistic and expressionistic imo, like the great works of the Dutch painter Van Gogh during the last years of his life.
The lyrics, the sound of the words and the diction go very well together with the music. Great song, very well performed by the whole band. Would love to have heard it live in the Taylor years, just like they did Torn and frayed, Sweet black angel and Ventilator blues during the 72 tour. Marvellous versions.

Didn't they only try those Exile songs in Vancouver and then drop them? Wish they had played all of them for the whole tour, especially Torn & Frayed and Ventilator.

Indeed. Also Loving cup. Loving cup at least one, maybe two times more. But those two you mention belong to my favourites. I regularly take a listen to especially Torn and frayed in Vancouver 72. Just moving.

"Dietrich movies, close up boogies
kissing kunt in Cannes"
I don't hear this nor do I think Jagger would be so crass - at least at that time. I think he sings "Kissing cut in cans". It is a reference to film making ie, to make a film cut, film canister, etc which is why there is a reference to Dietrich in the line before

Eleanor Rigby
interesting topic.
What I do find about this album is the songs where Keith has extensive backup vocals (Loving cup, torn, casino etc..) he seems to be the one who contributes the most in the lyrics ? Casino's lyrics seem to be Keith's...IMO.

I guess if you pick it apart. "No good, can't speak..." Heroine high, often too stoned to speak. "wound up, can't sleep..." Keith is a vampire, and just doesn't sleep a lot, likes to party late and create. "Sky diver, inside her, skip rope, stunt flyer..." the joys of groupie sex, kinky, and full on. "wounded lover, got no time on hand..." Jilted love, groupies again, and perhaps the wives. "One last cycle, thrill freak Uncle Sam..' touring the states during Vietnam, protests, and Altimont. "Deitrich moves, close up boogies, kissing cvnt in Cannes..." Speaks for itself. That is the jet set party, rich gypsies who are cultured. "Grotesque music, million doller sad, got no tactics got no time on hand..." A lot of shit music making big money, and probably a jibe at Allen Klein. "left shoe shuffle, right shoe muffle, sinking in the sand. Fade out freedom, steaming heat on, watch that hat in black..." More sordid business, loss of freedom when the big money rolls in, shifty business deals, and coorporate hacks that plunder their art...
All imo of course.

Casino Boogie is for me the definitive impressionistic pastiche of what it was like to be a Rolling Stone in the early 1970's...the decadence, the numbing drugs, the politics of the time, the demands of fame, the splendid isolation of being wealthy Tax Exiles, the philosophical and moral dead-ends, the inherent contradictions of posing as revolutionaries and being wealthy, cosseted Rock Stars, the endless desensitizing repetition, living in a toxic fishbowl, the music business hawkers and parasites, the superficiality and the profundity and the joy and the pain...it's all thrown in there...a stew of debauchery, apathy, cynicism and helpless disgust.

The electric bass work is sublime.
As far as kissing c*nt in Cannes...don't knock it until you're tried it...
Nice theory but I can't recall this in the Sanchez book. What page number? Maybe it was another book. I can imagine Richards singing it but this doesn't mean this what Jagger wrote or sang.Quote
Mathijs
Richards deliberately emphesizes the 'n' of both 'kunt' and 'cannes', he clearly likes the humor of it.
If I remember well it's stated in Tony Sanchez book that Anita Pallenberg kept on bleating about that all Jagger did was "kiss kunt in Cannes" while Richards was "trying to record an album". Also its stated that Anita only refered to Bianca Jagger as "that kunt". So it could very well be a reference to Jagger.

I remember Tony Sanchez wrote "I don't want to see this cow Anita again" ,could it be on the same part of the book ?Quote
