He's not been always doing that, and he doesn't do it ALL the time. I think the idea is to produce a cleaner snare sound. I'm no drummer either, but drummers told me it's not an easy thing to do.

Open G. capo @ 4th position (key of B ). it was also played in a lower key (G iirc) on some shows during the 75/76 tour, but it works a lot better in B. best version to me too.
